1.Intro about me, experience in building this and why.

First this is a long post, I apologize in advance and thank you for your help. The first PC I (my friend actually did, I didn't do anything but pay him and he bought the parts and built it for me) built was back in 2004. Total parts came out to about $4,000 and had all the top of the line parts (when the first Core 2 Duos came out and dual gfx cards 7950 GTX2 or whatever they were called for $600). Its funny how technology changes so fast. I kinda learned my lesson and now attempted my second PC build.

I built this PC because I will be finishing up college and decided to reward myself. I had the idea in Aug/Sept and then when Oct came I decided to do it. I asked my two younger brothers for assistance as I lost knowledge in the computer parts sector since I was busy focusing on school/work/family. My youngest brother told me about this site and I was very impressed compared to Newegg (the only site I use for building/finding). My other brother told me about the slickdeals & promotions. It was a combination of their assistance that lead me in creating this PC at such a great cost.

When I started building the computer, I took out my case, the mobo and the cpu. I put the mobo on a table and start to put the cpu in. The cpu did not fit for some reason. For 5 minutes I tried and tried. I asked my brother to check it out. Little did I know, MicroCenter sold me a 2600 inside a 4770k. I was super mad. I told my brother if he could help build it, since I was determined to build the computer today and some parts were open. I had 3x 4770k thanks to the microcenter 199.99 price. So I used one of the other ones. My brother said the hardest part was installing the cpu cooler to the mobo before putting it into a case. When I got back from microcenter with the correct and a new 4770k, he was working on the video card install. I took over from there. I managed to finish up.

When I believe I finished. I plugged it in and it did not start. I checked everything over again. I asked my bro to check it. He told me I did not connect the cpu power. When I looked at the asus mobo manual, I misread and thought it said I had to plug in either/or in the cpu/mobo slot. The second attempt, I forgot to do the same thing but for the video card. On the third attempt it did turn on and went to bios but gives me that error message(shown/asked as question/photo in section #3).

Saved between $500-$700 from what it would have cost me if it was not for the Nov/Dec sales :)

Computer name: I watched anime since I can remember (total overall 500+ series/seasons/movies/ovas watched to date. I have anidb/mal if anyone wants to see a list). Anime is really what I watch (maybe 3-4 tv shows and 1-2 movies a year). For gaming, I use the handle .`, Itachi's Bankai and I was going to use the initials instead as the name. But then I realized, its black/red(white if I turn enable the lights on the fans). I ended up going with Akatsuki since they use black/red.

I will be overclocking this computer and have never done it yet. Your suggestions/advice/expertise in improving this computer build is welcomed. Thanks for your help.

2.Where I got the parts and extra items that came with.

CPU: MicroCenter special promo for $199.99 crazy, came with Free Final Fantasy XIV PC

CPU Cooler: MicroCenter

Motherboard: MicroCenter, purchased with CPU Combo Discount $30.00

Memory: Newegg, was on sale and 10% discount. I was going to get the Dominator Platinum since it was on sale too, then i did some research and found out Vengeance Pro came out when Haswell did and was made for that. Update: Bought the 1866 for $5 less than the 1600. Will test to see which is better then return it cause both items have iron egg.

Storage: Ebay

Video Card: MicroCenter Promo Deal $330 & Free Splinter Cell Blacklist & Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag PC

Sound Card: Newegg, Promo and $10 Discount. At first I was not going to get one since my mobo had decent sound according to my research, then Newegg had a sale, enough said :) I have a sound blaster x-fi elite pro (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16829102191) from my old 2004 build. I still have the control unit that goes with it. It still works, should I use this instead?

Wired Network Adapter: Newegg, back in 2010 I dont remember how much it was. I am not even sure if i should be using this or upgrade to something else. I put it in my brothers computer and it did boost up my FIOS speed from 80mbps to 100 mbps.

Case: Newegg, $20 Discount & $20 Rebate

Power Supply: Newegg, $20 Discount & $20 Rebate

Optical Drive: Newegg, $3 Discount

OS: I did not need one at first since I have a dreamspark account. I downloaded win 8 N because I gave out all my other copies to my brothers. It did not work so in the end I bought it on amazon. I upgraded to 8.1 Pro.

Mouse: Newegg Discount $8.00

Monitor: TigerDirect Matched Amazon $282.14 and had $30 Discount

Keyboard: Newegg, 10% Discount

Mouse: Newegg. $8 Discount. (Did not like the mouse, too use to the Steelseries Ikari I got at MicroCenter back in 2011., I have Carpel Tunnel/Arthritis and the Steelseries Ikari gives me a place for my ring finger to rest on comfortably) (tried about 10 different mouses within 3 years and the Steelseries Ikari is the best for me)

Headset: Ebay, heard this was good on head-fi website.

Thermal Paste: Ebay, Shin-Etsu X23-7783D

3.Questions/Problems I am having with this Brand new computer already.

I need some help/advice on the following questions below(I figured I asked here first since there is many experts here. I will still continue to google and look on forums. Maybe I should start creating a user account on the brand/part website for support?):

MOBO:

1.After turning on the computer for the first time, I got a message "CPU fan error! Press F1 to run setup". I assume this is because I am not using the cpu cooler that came with the cpu? *This question has been answered. Thank you for your answers and help.

2.Which drivers should I install? *This question has been answered. Thank you for your answers and help.

2a.Is there a specific order I should install them? I read on forums just install asus suite and the ez update takes care of everything. *This question has been answered. Thank you for your answers and help.

3.I was once told I should go into my bios and set a password so people cant change the settings. I did but I put it both on the admin and user. I also enabled fastboot, now I cant get into the bios because it loads up too fast. I press f2 and del as fast as I can, but it loads to fast. How can I get into my bios and disable the user password on start up?

4.Every time I turn off my computer, my keyboard and mouse are still on, even though my computer is off. I have recharge usb on, so I believe this is the problem?

  1. Ram shows up as 1333 as shown in picture. Should I just change this during the OC process or do it in the bios now? *This question has been answered. Thank you for your answers and help.

Drivers/Updates: Note all these questions kinda go together.

5.Should I install from cd that comes the parts? Update through Windows Update? Through actual brand/part website? I believe I should be downloading it from the brand/part website since it is the latest versions. For any of the options, I need to put in the asus mobo disc and install the "lan driver" for internet access. Unless I download it from another computer and put it on a flash drive. *This question has been answered. Thank you for your answers and help.

6.Should I install the drivers on Win 8 Pro? Or upgrade to 8.1 Pro then install the drivers? I believe its upgrade to Win 8.1 Pro first then install drivers. If so I still need to download the "lan driver" to upgrade to win 8.1 pro. Is there another option?

7.Windows update: Should I download all updates? or upgrade then install the updates? I believe its upgrade to win 8.1 then update. but install all brand/part drivers first then do windows update second? *This question has been answered. Thank you for your answers and help.

Sound Card:

8.Not working yet, I believe its because I did not install the drivers yet. windows update did not see any updates for it. Currently using asus sound.

9.Which sound card should I use? The specs on the x-fi elite pro (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16829102191) I had in 2004 is still better than the one I have now. Should I use the x-fi elite pro or the Z?

Overclocking: I never done it.

10.What should I do? I found a couple of forums that explained and gave processes of how to do it. But then when I looked at the posts/reviews/comments on the bottom, it says its wrong sometimes. Which ones should I trust? What website should I follow?

11.I was told I should put thermal paste on my video card if I wanted to overclock. Should I do this?

12.I play dota 2 currently. Since I am going to be done with college, I will go back to playing wow, sc2, cs go. I also code using programs like ms visual studio and dreamweaver for websites (VMware and photoshop eventually). Is OCing necessary for me?

13.I want to OC everything. CPU, MOBO?, RAM, Video Card. Am I missing anything?

14.What software should I be using while checking OC stats? I see lots of pictures on google with 3 specific ones.

UPS/Surge protector:

15.Which one should I get and why? I know for UPS, I need to get 2x my wattage/VA.

Software/security:

16.I have Norton 360 and malwarebytes. Should I install these first then update drivers/windows update? or do all updates then Norton 360 and malwarebytes?

17.MSE is gone on 8.1? I see windows defender. When I googled, it says its pretty much the same thing, but MSE does more? I cant find a download for it. Does it matter since I am using Norton 360 and malwarebytes?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for any help you can give in advance. I will continue to look on forums, google, etc. for information. Its just hard finding a trustworthy/reliable/relevant information. I thank you again.

The reason the CPU fan error shows up is probably because you are not using the CPU_FAN header on your motherboard when you should be so if you look at your motherboard look for the "CPU_FAN" header and plug your coolers 3pin into it "even if its a 4 pin" should show where the 3 pins goes on the 4 pin.

Nice build overall though, cable management is decent could be better but it looks good.

Hello Painwithin,,

Thanks for the information. I figured it had to do something with either it was not the original one.

Thanks for your help.

Painwithin [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

No problem! glad i could be of help.

Matty [1 Build] 3 points 7 months ago

Really Nice build!!! Same as others plug the fan plug in to the CPU fan header. Drivers, use windows update till there are no more updates. then use the disc given from the manufacturer to load all the important drivers- like the mobo things for the chipset or get it online. for the gpu use the EVGA website to download the latest. Again really nice build, hopefully you can get it running smoothly soon and sort out the ram so its running at top performance.

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 7 months ago

Hello Matty,

Thanks for the help/advice.

Regarding the CPU fan header, yea it is in that slot.

Regarding the drivers, thanks for that tip. I just want to make sure I am not installing BS software that I really don't need.

Regarding the gpu, yes I did go to the evga/nvida website.

Yes I will sort out the ram once I figure out which one is better.

Thanks again.

Ram shows up as 1333 as shown in picture. Should I just change this during the OC process or do it in the bios now?

Try enabling XMP in your BIOS

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 3 points 7 months ago

Hello RealComputerBuilder,

I can't get into the bios as explained in q #3.

Thanks for the help/advice. I will try that once I am able to get in.

RealComputerBuilder 1 point 6 months ago

Ok, hope it works for you. To get into the BIOS you usually have to press the delete key while the PC is loading(Before windows boots up).

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 6 months ago

That's the problem, my computer boots too fast and it wont work. I press f2, f8, f12, del and none of them work.

What I did last before setting up the password, is setting fast boot. I believe that's why I cant get in.

I am reading on forums I can do: 1)Remove battery from mobo (CMOS). 2)Remove hard drive and it will boot to bios. I am going to try it tomorrow.

RealComputerBuilder 1 point 6 months ago

Ok, good luck :)

drunk-klaus 3 points 7 months ago

Putting thermal paste on your video card may void the warranty, so I probably wouldn't do that.

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 7 months ago

Hello drunk-Klaus,

Thanks for the information. I did read that from some forums but was not sure if I should still.

Thanks.

RyneSmith [4 Builds] 2 points 7 months ago

Holy wall of text! haha I am proud to say that I read all of it

You cabling could be a bit better but it's not awful by any means

Nice build all in all! How do you like the Hero? And like Painwithin said make sure you're using the CPU_FAN header

I would go ahead and set your RAM to 1600 in the BIOS

Nice build, +1

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 7 months ago

Hello Rynesmith,

Thanks for the information.

Regarding the cabling, I am not done yet. I am still trying to figure out if I want to use the 1600 ram or the 1866 ram. Also the 2 sound cards I cant think which is better.

Regarding the hero, please refer to my reply to Amplifiedllama above.

About the cpu_fan header, yes I do have that in the right place. I consulted the asus manual :)

I cant get into the bios, please see my questions #3 above.

Thanks for the help/information and for liking.

Tsugumi [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Was that a Naruto or Log Horizon reference I noticed in the name?

Anyways +1 for the build.

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello Tsugumi,

Haha, theres a few animes this season that has an "Akatsuki" person/thing in it and anymore overall. (strike the blood, log horizon)

It came from Naruto due to black/red (I should have explained the naming in my intro).

I understand why you might have thought Akatsuki-chan from Log Horizon.

Thanks for liking the build.

AmplifiedLlama [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

A lot of questions there, I would help but I honestly don't know that much. How is that mother board suiting you, I was thinking about a formula or something like that, or the Hero.

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello Amplifiedllama,

The board is nice. I was trying to decide between the hero and msi G65/45. I ended up with this board because I had used ASUS in my 2004 build (even thought it ended up dying and I rma'ed it to ASUS).

I can't say much at this point yet as I am still trying to get all the drivers installed.

As far as the mobo, I picked it because it had all the requirements I was looking for. Plus many good reviews. I will update and let you know later how I like this.

I am still new to the computer world as far as getting this setup properly.

DeathClap 1 point 7 months ago

Nice build, excellent description :). This is what I like to see.

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello Deathclap,

Thanks, I try to be as descriptive as possible. Its all thanks to what I learned over the years and it helps other people understand or want to understand the process.

reece00567 [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

very nice headphones how are the bumps, uncomfortable or?

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello reece00567,

I cant say much about the headphones. I just went out today and brought the female adaptor since the akg k702 uses the 6.3 while computers use 3.5.

I did put them on when I got them to see how they feel. You only feel the middle bump. I don't really notice it since I have a lot of hair. The feel of it against your ears/skin is pretty nice.

I cant talk about the sound yet, as I am using the ASUS mobo sound. Still trying to get the sound card to work.

I will let you know how it is in a week.

ravagex 1 point 7 months ago

Your post took longer then the build lol. Nice build

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello ravagex,

Haha, actually it took me longer to build the computer than type that.

I typed all of that in 10 minutes. Building the computer took me 3 hours. since I had to troubleshoot the connections and I was doing it slow since I wanted to make sure I didn't screw anything up as it was my first time.

Thanks.

Orthithian [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

do you suggest that creative labs sound card? I was thinking of getting one for my own build but wasn't sure it was worth it. Very nice balanced build!

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello Orthithian,

Sorry, I cant comment on that as I have not gotten that to work yet. Also I am still trying to think if I should use that one or my old one in my 2004 build.

I will let you know once I get it working. I need sound, because I am a big sound person. I have ears like a dog that can hear a pin drop in a room.

Thanks for liking.

Orthithian [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

Thats for responding!

JohnTsams [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Obviously the problem is that you need more ram and a bigger PSU. ;)

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello JohnTsams,

Haha, not sure yet.

Ram, yea I think I will later once it goes lower. For my purposes, I don't need it yet.

PSU, only if I decide to SLI.

Thanks.

JohnTsams [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

Just yankin' your chain. You've got plenty of RAM and Electricities in there. Nice build man.

treyman484 [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Who wants to change your BIOS settings? I Never put a password on my BIOS, mainly so if I forget the code, I don't want to be locked out.

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello Treyman484,

I am a big on security.

Yea, I am trying to remove it but I cant as explained in q #3.

plgdg [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Overkill to the max.

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello plgdg,

What do you mean by overkill?

[comment deleted]

xxzgmfx20axx [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Hello ParallelNuggetPie,

Haha, I actually replaced it with a ps4.

my ps3, I had since black Friday in 2012. I played a total of 30 hours overall on it. I intend to do the same with that ps4.

Honestly, I barely play on the consoles. I have 8 ps2 and 11 ps3 games still shrink-wrapped, unopened. :)

Good thing I didn't show my 16tb server next to it.
