Description

My server which I built around late 2010, I only just found this site so thought I would share. Planning on building another unRAID server shortly (likely mATX) as I have had to leave this one back in AU, now living in Canada.

Build thread on lime-tech forum: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=16176.0

Purpose: SMB Media Server

Modifications Made: - Replaced top drive cage with a better one - Upgraded top exhaust fans from 2x80mm to 2x92mm - Added 2x120mm intake fans (previously none) - Added Deepcool Rockman 2.5" fan controller - Cut out much larger intake on the bottom of the front panel - Replaced rear slot covers with black vented ones - Cutout motherboard tray for cable management - Polished and installed custom hard drive rails - Removed feet and replaced with wheels [regret..] - Bogged up front reset switch, power & HDD LEDs - Spray painted everything black - Installed sound deadening to top, front, bottom, middle and side panels - Installed 5x Welland Trayless HDD Racks - Other minor cuts/modifications to make stuff "fit" - Increased total drive support from ~6 drives to 17 :-) - Added Adaptec 1430SA PCI-E Controller Card (not shown in photos)

Memory could be considered fairly generic, however while working in a retail computer store, we sold hundreds of these sticks and got maybe half a dozen back over the few years I worked there so I can tell you first hand that they are very reliable, plus they had a lifetime warranty and this is a NAS setup so reliability is the most important factor. Memory usage is also very low and most of the time this build sits below 40% memory usage.

Power supply was selected because it is a good quality unit with a single 12V rail @ 41Amps, perfect for handling 15-17 drives all spinning up at the same time, during initial boot and parity checks.

Total Storage: 14.50TB Raw (as printed on drives) 12.00TB Redundant (protected storage) 11.06TB Formatted (what you 'get')

Overall this build has been very solid, I was planning on buying a Fractal Define XL initially but they were only "coming soon" when I was ready for a media server so I went down the custom route. I have done many builds in the Fractal cases and if you were going to build something similar to this now, a Define-XL would be an easier solution though this case was a lot of fun. Many beers were had.

Very cool! Not something we see around here. It would be great if more people shared things like this. I also checked out the build thread. Nice job on the case.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. Sorry I didn't include any prices but this was built over 3 years ago so half the parts aren't available anymore.

To give you a rough idea though, I think I spent maybe $500 on the PC hardware and about $1000 on drives.

Will be building a mITX NAS based on unRAID in the not-to distant future, might do up a mock build shortly ;)
