My first custom PC was built around 8 years ago and the noise whenever idle/load was a nightmare. Hopefully today’s PC parts have managed to reduce noise a lot. But I still want to be prudent. I was very picky about the components because I have multiple objects: quiet, powerful, compact and have the best deals available. Sounds difficult but thanks to months of research on youtube, silentpcreview and other hardware sites, I am pretty happy with the result.
Although being a “Black Friday build”, most of the items were bought before BF. Heard the suggestion that best price usually comes 1-2 weeks before holiday, setting up price alarms and waiting for the good new to come turned out working pretty well so thank you pcpartpicker! I was able to get some of the best deals around the year. I think the final price is quite impressive and I also got ~50 dollar rebate cards among these.
I am not an overclocker. But everyone choose K model for gaming so I bought it. 6500 can save around 30 dollars but that stock cooler will most likely be wasted.
Intrigued by its amazing fan quality and big diameter (135mm) yet budget price, this one definitely lives up to its brand name. Even spinning in full speed does not make the fan noise much more noticeable. It’s so quiet that I even thought this could be an overkill. Probably the 10 dollars cheaper Pure Rock would already be good enough! Mounting is a bit complicated though.
This is a late surprise. An amazing budget Z170 MB. Two USB 3 10GB ports is a plus but the best part is it comes with an wireless module! This straightly cuts ~30 dollars of the need buying a separate wireless adapter card. Usually you will find wireless module in an ITX MB or “deluxe” ATX boards which are way over 200 dollars but this one only costs 100 with 10 dollar rebate. Review says the overclockability is just decent but I am not aiming for that.
Unfortunately ram price has boosted up and is overall 10-20 dollars more expensive than months ago so this is the best I can get. Not a popular brand but runs at 3000mhz steadily.
This brand is usually not cheap compared to other budget SSDs, but sometimes has great sales on Newegg which makes it a no-brainer deal. I put all my programs and games in and they all run amazingly fast. I think there’s no point to choose those high-end 2.5 inch SSDs because in future if I want something even faster, I would probably go with NVMe drives.
It already has the rating of being a best quiet budget drive but unfortunately mechanical hard drives are the loudest parts in today’s PC. Idle noise is clearly noticeable and the occasional squeak noise is even more annoying. Disconnect the drive and the case becomes dead silent. But since people today like me still need some cheap storage to put all the other stuff, maybe the only way to go is to build a NAS.
Two big fans make it probably the quietest graphics card on market. Got good deal on Amazon as well. Cool overclockablity and great gaming performance. In very high FPS coil whine can be heard but overall I am very satisfied with it. Comes with $20 rebate card.
After months of searching before I almost gave up, Define C was released. It is a more compact version of Define S and has all the good design of their previous products and everything I want: quiet, compact, good airflow, plenty of cable management space and dust proof. Their sound dampening material is serious business and the two fans come with the case are very quiet. It looks sleek and solid, fits quite well in my room. I chose the no glass version because I don’t want something fancy that keeps glowing all the time and it’s 5 bucks cheap with more noise dampening panels. This is probably the smallest ATX case on market so cable management could be a bit restricted because of the limited room between PSU and drive cage but I am still able to make a very clear interior.
Originally targeted at its 135mm fan but later I found it even better: this unit works almost always in semi-passive mode and the fan is barely spinning! Even the quietest fan can’t beat no fan. Comes with $20 rebate card as well.
