Description

I wanted to build my son a computer for Minecraft. I was looking at the $400 to $500 range. I was surprised that I got so close. This works good for what he uses it for, he is 9 and loves to watch YouTube videos and tries to build worlds based on those videos. The only problem I have is that I can't get into the BIOS right now so I cannot OC this even with the simple OC that ASRock builds into their boards. I have read a ton of forums that this is a common issue with USB keyboards and I don't have a PS/2 right now. I have an adapter, but the VGA plug is in the way. Anyways...I am going to buy an old keyboard...or try to look for one at the flea market or garage sales. Anyways, half of this is probably useless to you all, but I thought it would be nice to share.

Details
AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Clock Rate3.8GHz
CPU Temperature While Idle-

bagalayos [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

it's working...it's kind of loud. i have it connected to the CPU fan header, but it seems to be running at full speed all the time. I changed some setting in the bios to slow it down, but whenever i shutdown/restart the computer the settings seem to go back to default, even though i check the box that says to keep those settings on start up...so I guess that is not the coolers fault...but it works fine

i blame the mother board

iiLeGiT101 [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

You definitely naild it. This build will work just fine for your son. Hope he enjoys!

bagalayos [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 12 months ago

Thanks...he does...it was running off an old hard drive for a couple of days while I waited for the WD...no lag and he likes creative mode and just throws tons of spawn eggs and fills up the screen...nothing affects this build...for now.

Doc_Gore [2 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

It uses on board video? Or are you planning on getting a video card?

KPeterman098 2 points 12 months ago

It's apparently mainly for Minecraft, and the GPU in the 5800k works pretty great for that. I've actually seen it run LFD2 maxed out, with 2x AA, while recording, at a solid 40 FPS.

Doc_Gore [2 Builds] -3 points 12 months ago

That's true, but Minecraft is actually pretty hard to run. My older 550 Ti could barely run it, and my current GTX 680 with a 3770K can barely get 30 FPS while recording.

KPeterman098 2 points 12 months ago

My friend has a 7770, and gets over 100 frames while streaming. All the settings are generally maxed out.

With HD 4000 on my laptop, I can get around 60-80 maxed out.

(Note, neither of us use OptiFine)

bagalayos [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

The A10-5800K has AMD HD 7660 graphics on the chip. I think...but for now it's fine...and I think someone else commented about adding a discrete card later...which would be fine. He's 9...so he will not be playing BO2 or Crysis 3 for now. He likes strategy games...so I might get him some Command and Conquer games...or stuff like that. But it runs Minecraft maxed out on the settings..."far" rendering and all that stuff.

Omnighost 1 point 9 months ago

Minecraft relies on the CPU more than graphics, since it runs through Java.

Ggadget 2 points 12 months ago

I have a 550ti with a 2700k (don't ask) and I get 140 fps with maxed out settings and max fps on.

ValiantRanger 1 point 12 months ago

I have a friend with a GTX 680 and a 3770K. He gets 400+ FPS average, I think something is wrong with your configuration. Try updating your drivers and make absolutely sure that your PSU is adequate for your system, it sounds like you're being starved of power for some reason. Another thing is that you may have V-Sync on which limits framerate to your monitor's refresh rate. Also most recording softwares limit your FPS to either 30 or 60 while recording. This can be changed in the software settings. Another thing is to make sure your system is cool. If your cards are getting hot they won't run as well.

Doc_Gore [2 Builds] 2 points 12 months ago

Yeah, a little after I posted that, I realized have my Fraps set to record at 30 FPS. A real face palm moment. Everything else in my system is fine.

ValiantRanger 1 point 12 months ago

lol. I've done that more times than I can count.

Foolerer 1 point 11 months ago

Im sure this is just your hdd bottlenecking. i have intel intergrated graphics and that can get about 10ish fps while recording (minecraft). I have a 5670 in my other pc and i can record with all the settings on max and still be above 30fps (minecraft).

Yes, but I've already fixed my problem.

Most likley, you need to add more memory to minecraft.

Pure 1 point 12 months ago

Hes going to want to play other games eventually. Hope he can play with a good fps and high render distance. I got my first computer just for minecraft now waiting on stuff to come to build my pc to play games other than minecraft.

KPeterman098 1 point 12 months ago

That's the good thing about starting with just the integrated graphics, if he needs to, he has the open PCI-E slots to upgrade.

bagalayos [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

KPeterman098...man you are in my head bro! I'm glad I posted this...so I know I wasn't off my rocker in my line of thinking.

achelos 5 points 12 months ago

Like the build it is perfect for Minecraft and even source games! Also I don't know if you know this already or not but if you buy a 6670 the cpu's gpu (7660) and the 6670 will run in a sort of crossfire mode automatically hope this helps if he wants to ever play bf3 or something like that and doesn't mind playing it on high-med settings then that's perfect. zypherstones [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

Very, very nice! however, if you can, flip the power supply upside down, so the fan's pointing out of the case.

bagalayos [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

There is no vent on the top of the case. I know what you mean, and I looked around the net for advice on this and most forums said you can do it either way. I figured that this way at least the PSU is getting air flow, even if it is slightly warmer air from inside the case. If it was the other way the top of the case would be blocking the fan.

Quintana 1 point 12 months ago

Solid build all the way around, nice job getting faster RAM to go along with the on board GPU. Maybe add a discrete card in a year or so, nice build that should last him quite a few years.

Enlyten [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

Minecraft is pretty GPU and CPU intensive... you may want to pick up a video card later, even if it isn't that great. Just to ease some of the strain on the CPU.

Divdor [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

Very nice budget build.

How's that CPU cooler?

is it really that brown? :(

viscosityae 1 point 10 months ago

IS this build suitable to run any games on high settings? I am looking for a cheap but good gaming build. I don't know too much about AMD CPU's.

MrTra1tor 1 point 5 months ago

You should pop in a graphics card in there. And if he's that young I doupt overclocking the CPU is necessary.

Padpo 1 point 3 months ago

How much FPS recording? FPS not Recording?

merc0487 1 point 2 months ago

So this cpu cooler is working just fine with your fm2 CPU?

bagalayos [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 7 days ago

Yes...my son has had no trouble with it.

Why win 8?!?!?!?!

bgiunt4 [1 Build] 5 points 12 months ago

I like windows 8, lots of people like windows 8. Its all based on preference.

Lowe 1 point 12 months ago

Why not?

NenBen10 0 points 12 months ago

My bad. I thought 7-Zip did not work on Windows 8. Just I don't know the age of the kid, but if he is young and is looking for tutorials he will have trouble finding some for Win 8.

MrTra1tor 1 point 5 months ago

There are a mod that makes Windows 8 look like WIndows 7...

frostythetoejam 1 point 12 months ago

Windows 8 works just fine for what the machine will be used for. Plus, to be completely honest, Windows 8 really isn't that bad, it just has a few hiccups which will most likely be fixed with further updates on drivers and such.

I also think it looks much nicer and cleaner. :)

NenBen10 0 points 12 months ago

But for Minecraft??? He wont be able to use many mods and have a hard time going into .rar files.

KPeterman098 1 point 12 months ago

Not true. 7-Zip handles all archiving needs extremely well on both 7 and 8.

bagalayos [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

Yeah...there was no price difference between 7 and 8...and he has some experience on his mother's computer with 8...he likes the "tiles" so to me it wasn't a tough decision.

thebeast59870 1 point 12 months ago

im only half way to finishing my first build, which may i say is very expensive and upgraded for a first build, but on my crappy laptop i installed windows 8 to give it a try and as it turns out there is this mode called "Desktop Mode" where you can run a regular screen like win.7 and have no problems accessing everything on the computer.

Ggadget 0 points 12 months ago

I have windows 8 on my laptop and it works fine. I can get whatever mods I want.

gt40spec [3 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

Windows 8 is awesome

Why the hell pay for your OS, it boggles my mind every single time.
