Gaming Rig "The Mistress"

Description

This is my first build for gaming. I got some inheritance money from my dad so I decided to build my 1st gaming rig rather than spending it with collectibles. I chose 2 Gigabyte GTX 660 OC's because it's cheaper than 1 GTX 680. I even chose a 1000 watt power supply so I won't have to think about my PSU when I would need to upgrade.

My wife actually named this rig because it takes some of my time away from her. Lol.

I would've gone with the single 680, but NICE BUILD! Everything looks very well done.

In the description he did state that the two 660s costed less than one 680 but I do agree with your comment. One fast card is better than two slower cards that only perform better when put in SLI/CrossFireX.

I would've gone with a single 670. Same price, but uses less power, produces less heat, and is better for the money with high anti-aliasing.

Completely agree. The 660s are an okay single card, and I mean barely okay but not the best choice for an SLI setup. a 670 would by far out perform SLI 660s, especially if you turn up Anti Aliasing which makes the 660s Choke because of their low memory bandwidth. The dreamy idea of having SLI is nice but factually not practical when a single card can do better and leave you room for future upgrades. Which brings to the point of a 1000w PSU, a 750w would be far more than enough, if its good quality to run SLI 670s let alone 660s.

^This makes me want to get a 670 more. :D

Completely agreed. So, OP...future upgrade possibly to a 770? :P

This build is really good. I think you went overkill on the psu as you could've gone with an 850w even if you have two GTX 660s. Also, I would've recommended a single 670 or a Radeon 7950 or Radeon 7970 because they are all single fast cards for around the same price that you paid for those two cards but otherwise, nice job!

Thanks! I will take note. I was actually thinking of upgrading to 2 GTX 670's when the prices go down.

Just FYI - If you take a second and review the prices of the last model, GTX 570, you'd see that the prices don't drop that much even when new cards are on the market. So I wouldn't expect the 670s prices to drop very much.

Noted. Thanks for the info. :D

How do you like that case? I'm looking at getting that one for my first build. I didn't care for it too much at first, but the longer I kept it in my parts list, the more it grew on me. :P

It's great! It gives you room for big fans and cable management.

what fps do you get in BF3 and some other games? and why would you even rate Win7 4/5?

mantawing [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 11 months ago

In BF 3 single card performance gets me 40-50 fps in 1920 x 1080 resolution, in SLI I get 80 - 110 fps. In Crysis 3 I get 35-45 fps in single card performance with TXAA, in SLI I get 70-90 fps. I rated Win 7 Home premium a 4 because I actually wanted Win 7 Pro but got the home premium due to my budget.

Javanode [1 Build] 1 point 11 months ago

well, that's nice. Anything above 40 fps for me is smooth.

candy [2 Builds] 1 point 11 months ago

Awesome! 2 OC'd GTX 660s is equivalent to 1.3 GTX 680s. I actually have several saved/wanted builds with those two cards exactly. Good choice. What kind of FPS do you get in games?

Take note of some of the other comments on here, whilst theoretically they may be faster the low memory bandwidth makes them struggle with anti-aliasing. Also going for a 670/680/7970 gives the option for SLI or Corssfire in the future with better cards.

candy [2 Builds] 1 point 11 months ago

True, but if you're on a budget and you don't plan on upgrading in the future, then it's a better choice. I do have to admit with newer games coming out, 3gb cards would have been ideal.

Looking in the UK, a single 7970 is cheaper than dual 660's. But that's entirely based on the current prices where you live. Personally I'd still go for the 670/7970 over the SLI'd 660's.

mantawing [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 11 months ago

Yeah, I have a strict budget for this build. Here in Singapore 2 660's are cheaper than a 7970 or even a 680. That's why I went with this build. If I had more money I'd go for dual 670's.

I tried doing SLI in Crysis 3 again showing fps with fraps(not recording btw). Min fps I get is 40, and maximum is 120. On average I'd reach about 60-70. I changed to SMAAx4. I only use SLI in Crysis 3 because in BF 3 I reach 55-60 fps with SLI disabled.(I overclocked the 660 btw to achieve that with OC guru 2) Those are the only games I have tried it on.

Nice. I was wondering about Crysis 3 :P
