As we enter into Q2 of 2015 I've updated the system with a EVGA 780 TI and two more SSD's in a RAID-0 configuration.
All parts have been running w/ out issue, perfectly in fact. The only cosmetic problem would be the h100i LED's are burning out but the Corsair forum says a fix is on the way. So once it's available I'll RMA my cpu cooler just so I can play w/ the LEDs again. Just green is working now.
I use this system as any computer enthusiast would: gaming, benchmarking, tweaking system settings, education and overall fun. I Also run quite a few VM's on the system, and that's the main reason why you see 16gig's of ram.
Over the last few months I've asked a lot of questions and I've answered a few. Here is an FAQ on the build and my parts:
CPU: Q: why an i7 3770k, the i5 3570k is a better deal. A: I run quite a few VM's at the same time for testing, and it seems to use all cores. I also got a really really good deal on my i7.
MB: Q: why the MSI? A: I picked the MSI just due to many of the reviews. And after running it for a few months, I'll never pick another MB other than an MSI. It's VERY stable and it's easy to OC the CPU and RAM. I had my i5 OC's to 4.9 stable and cool and I have my i7 at 4.5 stable and cool. For some reason I can't reach past 4.5 with my I7 but that's another topic I guess. It also looks great, imho.
Memory: Q: Dood, you don't need more than 8gig ram. A: RAM is cheep and again I run quite a few VM's and game at the same time. I Also like to play around w/ ramdrive. I have a 2gig ram drive that I've moved all my system temp files to as well as my browser cache. Also the Corsair Vengeance is awesome. As long as your CPU cooler can support it (its TALL!!). I have mine OC to 2000 Mhz at the moment and it runs great.
Storage: Q: Your WD raptors are a waste of money. A: IMHO, having a fast SSD as your main OS w/ your primary apps and a fast RAID-0 for your data drive ='s storage bliss. In short, I may have wasted a little $$ here but I've always wanted raptors and I've always wanted to play around w/ raid-0. And for mechanical HDD drives, this is freakin' fast in RAID-0. I also place my VM's on the raptors, and they seem to enjoy it. Lastly, I preform full backups on the Toshiba 2tb drive. I got it for under $100 and it's working perfectly.
GPU: Q: Why? A: Great reviews on newegg and other reviewers. I wanted a GTX 670 so it was just tracking down the vendor. I've had zero issues w/ the Galaxy and I'm happy I went with it. Update for 2015: I gave my gtx 670 to my son to make room for my 780 ti :) i'm still happy.
PSU: Q: It's overkill. A: I may SLI before the end of the year so I wanted it to be overkill. I got it at a great price.
CASE: Q: ? A: I love my 650D. To me a case is personal so whatever works and looks good to the eye of the beholder.
CPU Cooler: Q: ? A: The h100i has been working great and it looks awesome. I personally hate the looks of air coolers that take up 3/4's of your motherboard.
Parts: Q: Where you get all the parts? A: I used newegg for everything. it all arrived on time, zero issues and i've yet to have one RMA (knock-knock > wood).
