Father & Son build (first build ever)

Description

A few months ago my son Jahleal (11) and I were looking at the next-gen consoles and the games that were going to be released for them. I didn't see anything that would constitute paying $400-500 dollars for consoles that had no games and were mostly going to sit on my entertainment center collecting dust. Also I was looking into getting a nice PC for for my home.

Loving to build things and tinker, hack and root things, I decided to get a father & son project going and build a gaming PC. I asked a few friends who have/ had gaming pc's where to start my research. After a few months of Tomshardware, Newegg, Youtube and finally PC Part Picker. We went to work and came up with this build.

I went with a great priced but very powerful CPU that I can use for a multitude of things (home computing, games), a great GPU and an overclocking, mid-ranged, manly MOBO with a case with a huge window that will make you smack yo mama, to show it all off. Added some custom fans and sleeves with some LED's to add that last touch of fair.

and here we have it ...

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 4 months ago

Zac 16, I said the same thing!! LOL, but this started out as a $1500 budget build and next thing I know I went H.A.M!! Im soo happy with it.

RyneSmith [2 Builds] 2 points 4 months ago

Great job! Overall nice build and the only thing I feel might be "overkill" is the mobo but hey that thermal armor is sexy :)

Great father son project! He's a lucky kid to be getting into computers so early, wish I had the start he's going to.

Welcome to the Air 540 club! +1 and more if I could

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks RyneSmith, I love the board. I'm going to use the future proof card right now. No, but really, I loved the aesthetics of the board even though I have to RMA it because of a DIMM slot issue. I may liquid cool the new board once it's been checked out.

xx116xx [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Nice build overall, well thought out and the cable management is great. +1 from me!

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks xx116xx, I will be over clocking the hell out of it as soon as my new board comes in. i have to RMA the current 1 because of a DIMM slot issue.

xx116xx [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Ahhh, sucks :/ Anyways, hope you have fun with it when the new one comes in!

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 4 months ago

Yeah it does, but Im kinda happy that get to tinker with it a little more. Its the Ying and the Yang of PC building

iThoughtSheWas16 1 point 4 months ago

Ugh I wish I could give this build +5! The build itself is great, great cable management, and that case is awesome! Nice overclock on the i7 too. Have you considered overclocking the 780? It will give it better performance. While some parts may be overkill, this is a solid build. +1

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks. I am still tweaking the CPU and GPU. I have to RMA the board because 2 of the DIMM slots are not working. As soon as the new board get here and I check it out, I will be tweaking it alot more and matbe getting a higher RES monitor.

xxvolwarexx [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

That set up is amazing man!

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Thank xxvolwarexx. Im still tweaking the software and the aesthetics

RAM modules work at there best when placed in the correct slot. They are usually alternating and not next to each other. On all the Asus boards I've ever used, slots 2 and 4 are the ones you're supposed to put the RAM in if you have two sticks.

This is not to say that putting the RAM in the wrong slots won't run, it will, just not at its best.

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Yeah, unfortunately I have to RMA the board because the correct DIMM slots arent working. As soon as Newegg sends me the new board I will set it up properly.

dkevelx 1 point 4 months ago

Ahh. I see. That's unfortunate, especially when considering that it's a premium board. DX

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 3 months ago

New board is in place!! everything check out! The new board had caching software built in. Old mobo must've been really messed up on the software and hardware sides

dkevelx 1 point 3 months ago

Ahhh yisss. Everything in it's proper place. Can't add more +1's, though. T-T

Because if you build it they will come, they will play and you'll become one with the Matrix of Leadership!!

spencerharden 1 point 4 months ago

what?

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

HUH?

spencerharden 1 point 4 months ago

what?

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

yeah, I have to RMA the board. Im waiting on my new board from Newegg. As soon as it arrives and I check it out, I will send the old board back and they'll credit me for the old board

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Yeah, unfortunately I have to RMA the board because the correct DIMM slots arent working. New board is out for delivery as I type this message.

Apach3 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

i see another Air 540 has succumbed to the case "disease" known as the "excessive fan disorder" XD

but seriously, great build, and props to you for including your son!

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Apach3, I thought the same thing as I was building it! I have to admit it though, the air cooling and the aesthetics are the real reasons I chose the Corsair 540. Gotta show off the Red sleeved cables and LED's.

Apach3 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

there are also practical reasons to having an Air 540, particularly with the location of the disk drive and power supply mounts. it's one of the most well thought-out cases that has even left me thinking "why haven't people thought of this before?" when I first saw it

and yes, i can definitely see why you want it to be flashy :)

KingOfKhazmidan 1 point 4 months ago

Luckiest son alive lol.

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 4 months ago

KingOfKhazmidan, I'm the lucky one. He's a great kid. he really pitched in on this and he insisted on testing all the new games first hand!! LOL!!

deathsoap 1 point 4 months ago

Its good you and your son share and work together. +1

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

deathsoap I'm proud of my little dude, He put in some work on this thing. He even put the desk together almost single-handed. Great kid! I'm trully blessed

spencerharden 1 point 4 months ago

u dont have to like say there name their will know that u r talking to them

scalise [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

780 is kind of overkill at 1080.

You should look into picking up a 1440 w/ a higher refresh rate to really put that GPU to good use.

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Scalise, I cant lie. I wasn't really thinking when it came to the monitor, all I did was make sure that the monitor was 1920 x 1080 and was 27 inches with a decent refresh rate. I'm going to look into a new monitor before the 30 day window to return my current monitor has expired. Thanks for the advice.

scalise [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

No problem, would just really hate to see such a great card not seeing it's potential. You should look into Qnix panels. 27" 1440 w/ overclockable refresh rates up to 120Hz :)

Here's a great forum about Korean panels.

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks for the link scalise, I have to spend more money now!!! LOL!

Bladedrummer [2 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

I was stoked when my father let me buy a SNES with my own money...

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Bladedrummer, I remember rocking the Commedore 64 and the ATARI with Duck Hunt. Those were the days. Now I can play those games on my Galaxy Note 3!!

Bladedrummer [2 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Hehehe, good old days. My first gaming was on my uncle's ZX Spectrum... I thought it was high tech.

EngageTheSun [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Beautiful build! +1

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 4 months ago

Thanks EngageTheSun, I'm afraid that I'm hooked on new tech and don't have the willpower to stop building and rooting and overclocking!!

jdwash11 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Great build overall but it seems rather large for your work area. A small form factor build would've been pretty cool to see IMO.

bojackr1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks jdwash11, I just put the case on the desk so that I could take pics for the forums. Unfortunately I have to sit it on the floor.

jdwash11 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

gotcha, that's not too bad then. atleast you have wood floors and not carpet lol

PEG086 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

12allanon1 1 point 3 months ago

How's that R.A.T. working out for you sir?

my bro had one, and for him it was, frankly, a rat....it broke >.<

it just looks so nice tho /drool

SirFluffy [1 Build] 1 point 3 months ago

Great build! +1! Tell me, how's that headset coming along? Thinking about buying one :)

thunderdan602 [1 Build] 1 point 2 months ago

Beautiful rig. Question regarding that mobile and case. We're you able to mount the mobo in the case with that mobo backplate being attached?

soy_milk 1 point 2 months ago

Do you think that there is room for a sound card (ASUS Xonar Essence STX) on the top PCI slot? Great build BTW!

fnapoli [1 Build] 1 point 2 months ago

How do you like the headset?

dkevelx 1 point 4 months ago

Sounds like you need to reinstall CorsairsLink2 software. I had issues where I couldn't control my H100i's LED and fans, reinstalling the software fixed everything.

As for your pump failing, that may also be linked to the software, though if it really is failing, why not RMA?

I've used the X60 before, it isn't much different from the H100i. =/
