Sister's B-Day

Description

I made this for my sister. Her birthday was on October 27th and she turned 11. Her favorite game is Minecraft and she can't play that on our 2nd gen i5 laptop, so I talked with my parents and decided to build her a PC. I was going to go with only 4GB RAM, but my sister uses up all 6GB on the laptop, so I went up to 8. Picked the motherboard/cpu because first, the CPU has 6 cores, so it can handle her multitasking (really her just forgetting to close ie browsers) and the motherboard is MSI so I won't have to spend time overclocking and I can just press the OC Genie II button. That and it was only $39.99 with the 6300. Hyper 212 EVO is cheap. The RAM was the cheapest Microcenter had in terms of 8GB 1600. The 1TB HDD because it's only $5 more for 500GB. The case looks cool and it's cheap, really plasticy though. PSU was dead so I took it back and replaced it two days later and it booted fine. GT 610 because it can play Minecraft above 60 FPS. Windows 8 because it came with a free 8.1 update, AOC monitor because it's a 22" 1080p LED, how could you pass it up? Keyboard and mouse are wired because she always runs off with wireless stuff and it takes us forever to find it. I'll upload more pictures after school today, but I'm thinking of getting her an NZXT Hue lighting kit for Christmas so I can set the inside color to pink, which happens to be her favorite, and it would look pretty cool through the side window. Thanks for stopping by, and leave your comments down below if you have any suggestions as to what I could do that's cheap and visually appealing. :) Happy Building

The price of the 6300 plus the 610 combined would have allowed you to get a 6800k/5800k instead. That's the root I would have went for, but you did get a solid price with the CPU and MB. Overall this is a very nice build. I'm sure your sister has to be stoked about this. +1 brother of the year award.

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

The 6300 allows for more upgradibility and multitasking on her 10-15 internet explorer browsers that she forgets to close. The 610 is just under the 5800k/6800k in performance, so with the mobo at only $39.99, it made more sense to go with a 610 and 6300 to get more processing power because she'll need that more than graphics power.

dschutt84 [3 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

Totally disagree. A 610 wouldn't stand against a 8670D in games. And browser option has nothing to do with CPU speed other then ram. Like i said you wouldn't notice much of a difference between a 6800k and a 6300 except better graphics and gaming for less money. Look at benches the 6300 is a little better at multitasking but the 6800k will do better at single threaded apps which internet browsing is.

Captain.Aviator 2 points 5 months ago

The 8670 might be stronger, but as he said, she mostly plays MC, a video game that requires more processing power than graphics power, because of the graphics in-game. The RAM and Cpu are paramount to playing MC, whereas a wonderful gpu is just a nice to have.

does the 610 play any other games?

RealComputerBuilder 2 points 8 months ago

Should run Source Engine games fine, my friend has the GT 620 and that runs TF2 on max(ish) and Just Cause 2 on medium... but it won't much more than that, if your nVidia bound and want to play Battlefield(etc.) get the GTX 650 Ti BOOST for the money they are good(In the UK anyways I've heard in the US you may as well get a 660)

JakeyU72 +1 on the build BTW! ;)

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

She only plays minecraft at the moment, but if she gets into other games such as team fortress 2 or other source engine games she should be fine.

talby [8 Builds] 5 points 8 months ago

+1 nice build, gotta love microcenter - except their gpu prices are not the greatest, probably would have went for an HD6570 for 2x~3x the performance for just $10 more from the big A.

cheers

Zeus [1 Build] 4 points 8 months ago

Great build! +1

If your sister wants to play any AAA titles she might wanna consider upgrading that gpu

ImElkay [1 Build] 3 points 8 months ago

That's really nice of you to build your sister a computer. I wish one of my siblings would build me one haha.

Apach3 [1 Build] 3 points 8 months ago

interesting justifications, though i don't think you need 6 cores for web-browsing. at least you got her something that can have stuff added to it later on down the road, like a better graphics card.

normally i would've suggested a high-end APU for this kind of gig, but since you only paid $40 for a good motherboard it turns out alright (gotta love Microcenter combo deals, amirite? :D )

also, props to you for building your sister a PC!

IamApropos [3 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

As you may expect I probably would have dome something a little different, nothing worth mentioning. Because you built this for your sister +1. Great stuff (Batman) and thank you for sharing your build.

defacid 2 points 6 months ago

I like how everyone is all "get a better gpu" when it doesn't sound like she'll ever even use it! :P

Plus, with the build you have here, she can always upgrade if she decides that she wants to play anything beyond Minecraft. Good build! $500 w/out OS, Monitor, Inputs, and Wifi adapter!

Electrospeed 1 point 8 months ago

I'd have spent a bit more and gotten a GTX 650, but if Minecraft is all she is going to do, then it doesn't matter too much. I just like a bit of overkill.

+1 for a great build

Mediciu5 [2 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

I lol'd @ "Picked the motherboard/cpu because first, the CPU has 6 cores, so it can handle her multitasking (really her just forgetting to close ie browsers)". As it sounds like my youngest son's problem.

For additional visual appeal, have her paint the case or otherwise adorn it with pictures/stickers. If that isn't something she'd enjoy, the NZXT Hue is a great option.

+1 on the build (and +10 on the reason).

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks! She normally has 10-15 browsers open at a time haha

Quintana 1 point 8 months ago

I think this build would have been perfect had you bought a different GPU. I personally would have at least put a 7770 in it, yeah she probably doesn't need it but it gives her room to grow.

DDawg426 1 point 8 months ago

That was extremely nice of you to build this for her! I am sure she will love Minecraft on this :D!

Like others are saying, an APU would've been great! And, if you got a Radeon graphics card, you could crossfire them for huge performance!

Kalistol 1 point 8 months ago

Pretty darn good build. My only complaint is the OS and the GPU. If I could give some advice, you could spend an extra $40 and get a Radeon 6750 (literally three times better than the 610), and "Downgrade" to Windows 7 Home Premium.

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

My sister wanted Windows 8 and all she does is play Minecraft. The GT 610 is fine for her because Microcenter had a sale for $46 only and it stays between 60 and 80 frames per second in minecraft.

Primusmulti [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

just a heads up just in case you make another build you can get a windows 8 key for 25$ on reddit.com/r/softwareswap

leftyrojas430 [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

I want to build my sister (13) a pc for the same reasons, except she doesn't run away with the keyboard, lol. I tried but she does not want a computer:(

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Oh.My.God. I never thought I would get this amount of likes :D thank you to all of you and to answer a question a lot of people have, I didn't go with the 5800k/6800k because they're not as powerful or good for multitasking. Like I said up above, my sister fills up 6GB of RAM using an i5, so I went with a 6300, six cores can handle the multitasking she does with browsers, and no, she doesn't play anything but Minecraft and I don't think it'll have any other graphical updates. If she gets into more AA/AAA titles, I'll get her an entry level card for xmas/bday in a few years or so.

tmteamgreen 1 point 8 months ago

Great build for the money, a better graphics card would improve alot on it

RomanianRondo9 [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

what a very nice sibling haha :) good work

maddog5236 1 point 2 months ago

I doubt you could find a new one, but used Radeon 4850's tend to hover around $30 on Ebay. A 4850 would be significantly better than the GT 610, but like you said your sister is focused on Minecraft, which doesn't need a ton of graphics processing. If she were to move off into more "serious" games, I'd suggest you keep that in mind, however.

ThongSoldier 1 point 27 days ago

+1. I know I'm a little late and this may not seem all that important now. But whatever. Nice looking build. Starting to build my own now so I'm just searching through and I find this. Really nice thing you did.

xshadowinxbc [2 Builds] 0 points 8 months ago

Um... I think you would have been better off with a better CPU with better integrated graphics than using money on that piece of crap, no offense. I'm being entirely serious here, that thing's probably like the lowest of the low end that you can get. You spent less on the graphics card than most of your other parts. If you're going to do that, you shouldn't even buy one. If I were you I would go exchange the CPU for one with better integrated... and then get a motherboard with video out ports, because that one doesn't have them... and... okay no, I can't upvote this at all. I'm sorry, I'd love to give points because you're doing something for someone.. but you could have done much for that person if you actually cared rather than letting it end at "I'm doing something for someone".

Like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/xshadowinxbc/saved/2PsC

If that graphics card was on sale like it usually was, I would have put a better HDD in there, but you know, bad timing and all. Would need some cheap mouse/keyboard combo and wifi, but that's about it. Granted, that graphics card is super overkill for Minecraft, but, should she ever do anything else, it would serve well for it.

And I know this is gonna be an unpopular opinion, so let the downvoting commence. Shrug.

daes79 [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

I agree

Gooberdad [2 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Wow that link build is better for less. nice!

Crazyjohn551 -1 points 8 months ago

I disagree if all she is doing is playing minecraft then this is fine i had a gt 610 and it played minecraft pretty well and with this processor you wont have to upgrade for a while and you could always get a better gpu if she wants to play more demanding games. :) just my thoughts

xshadowinxbc [2 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Did you even read my post? The problem is that this "Minecraft computer" costed 750$. If it was "just for Minecraft", you can build something sufficient for less than that. He's wasting money on a 610, which is simply utter crap for anything but Minecraft, whereas he could have: a) Built something better in general (look at my build above), so that she wouldn't even have to upgrade should she do anything else. b) Built something cheaper using integrated graphics that would probably outperform it anyway.

I just don't understand any of the justifications for the parts used. If this is a gaming build made to replace something that was insufficient, it's horribly optimized for its purpose. Life goes beyond Minecraft, and whatever GPU she would upgrade to from that thing, there's already been 50$ wasted in this POS GT 610 she can't do anything with (who the heck would buy it?).

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

It isn't just for Minecraft. If you read my other responses, she leaves all her windows open and forgets to close them (normally 10-15 browsers open at a time. The APUs wouldn't be as good at multitasking, and not all the parts were as cheap at Microcenter as they are on sites like Newegg or Tiger Direct.

xshadowinxbc [2 Builds] 0 points 8 months ago

...What? The APU's have 4 cores. They'll be more than fine for leaving browser windows open. XD

Either way the build I put up there would annihilate what you made for her for any purposes. Shrug

Well, what's done is done I suppose.

Primusmulti [1 Build] 3 points 8 months ago

yeah you're seriously going way too hard on this man, especially since the fx6300 is an amazing CPU and you're just being an ass. he doesn't need to spend an extra 100$ on a graphics card if she's not going to be doing anything at all with it

xshadowinxbc [2 Builds] 0 points 8 months ago

Not doing "anything" huh? It was my understanding that this was because the original machine was insufficient for playing a game. So, what happens when this one is insufficient for something else? Waste money upgrading the GPU incrementally to something that is again barely enough for her next purpose? That's idiocy.

As an FYI, many of the sales when I originally linked that build are ending. While they were on, what I built was CHEAPER than his build overall... and it was better in every way. It's called thinking about what you're buying.

Edit: And actually if I toned down the CPU a bit, I could even fit in an SSD in mine, or a better HDD.

And sorry I don't beat around the bush, I tell people what I honestly think.

Primusmulti [1 Build] 2 points 8 months ago

we're talking about a 11 year old girl who plays minecraft and the system has already been bought... you're ******* comments aren't needed in any way

xshadowinxbc [2 Builds] 0 points 8 months ago

The "ignorance is bliss" approach, then?

Primusmulti [1 Build] 2 points 8 months ago

for a first computer for a young young girl, I think the ignorance will slide. Your comments are being given like she's a full time gamer

xshadowinxbc [2 Builds] 0 points 8 months ago

Who is to say she won't want to do anything more demanding though? As a small child I remember when I got a graphics card for my computer randomly, and thought it was an upgrade and it didn't matter which one I got... and it still sucked for playing Sonic R. It was an upgrade from what I had, but it was terrible. Or that one time someone made a build for me and then I found out it was actually... bad, and I could have done a better job myself.

And that's my point really (a bit roundabout I suppose). I think it's a bit of a disservice to give someone anything but the most well thought out choices, for any future situation. You're picking parts out for someone, then you should always aim for the best you can get for them for the price range you're considering, for the goal. Anything less is a disservice as someone that is doing something for someone. Though I suppose not giving anything at all is worse. I'm just saying. If I was buying this for someone... I would do it right. I wouldn't fall back on excuses like "well, they'll probably never do this anyway".

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

It's done, ready to upgrade, and she's happy with it. That's all that matters. Also, I picked these parts because they were all at Microcenter and they were high quality.

xshadowinxbc [2 Builds] 0 points 8 months ago

You're calling the GT 610 high quality, huh?

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

Not the 610, but if you look at the rest of the parts, they're high quality, and the 610 does exactly what I wanted it to do for her: stay above 60 FPS in Minecraft.

put the fan on the other side and you are golden :) nice build mate, tell me how the 610 goes

JakeyU72 [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks for the advice, and the 610 stays between 60 and 80 FPS in Minecraft, she doesn't play any other games.
