Texas Longhorn Build

Description

I graduated from UT in 2008 and have lived in Austin for 13 years, I figured I would dedicate one of my builds to one of the best Universities... Hook 'em! photo album

Since I couldn't really find Burnt Orange components I decided to just stick with orange instead. I will also eventually have a cut out of the longhorn logo and maybe some other text on the front panel and have an orange LED light shining from behind.

3DMark 11 score

Edit: If anyone knows of a company or website I can go to, I'd like to try and get the front panel laser cut with a bit more than just the longhorn logo, maybe put Texas above it and then Hook 'em underneath... seems like something I'd want laser cut rather than trying to use a jigsaw or dremmel. If anyone has spare time and is artistic I'd love to see some ideas, email them to me [email protected], thanks!

Update: Uploaded more photos and will continue as the build progresses

Update #2: Finished the build, just need to figure out where I want to place the lights, paint the top and bottom stands and wait for my laser cut to get here for the front panel. All in all it was pretty smooth, some tight spaces, but I like it, here are some more pics.

Update #3: Thanks for all the likes y'all! I uploaded another photo of what the front panel will look like. Jeremy from performance-PC.com designed it and will be laser cutting it soon. I'll upload another photo also when I have it pasted on the front.

Update #4: Overclocked CPU to 4.5ghz and GPU, as well. Updated rates and benchmarks score to show. Uploaded a few more photos with the UT laser cut front panel.

Update #5: I finally got around to taking some photos of the completed build with the top and bottom legs painted as well as some of the screws and backplates.

Up vote for being a Texan, I love Texans. Upvote for that GPU. Upvote for creativity. Unfortunately, I can only give one upvote, but you got it.

Personally, I would have opted for a 1600 RAM, but I'm sure it doesn't make much of a difference on that system. Gratz!

Woot Woot! TEXAS!

About the RAM, I'm pretty sure he chose it mainly because it is orange, the difference between DDR3-1333 and 1600 is not that big but if he would have bought it from a purely performance perspective then you are correct.

Starlana [2 Builds] 3 points 8 months ago

LOL, I didn't even think about that. Good point!

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 5 points 8 months ago

I did buy 1600, put wrong link. Updated to show the real 1600. Thanks

Starlana [2 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

No problem Tex. :)

Haha, thanks man.

Zeus [1 Build] 2 points 8 months ago

Can't wait to see the finished build! +1 for the custom painted 780. Question, did you do that paintjob yourself?

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 8 months ago

Yes painted it myself. Not as difficult as I thought it would be. Here is another video I watched to get an idea of how to take it apart.

Zeus [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

You did a great job, looks like a pro did it.

Bluesmurph [1 Build] 2 points 7 months ago

Hey I saw this build on reddit I think. Pics from a LAN party XD Really cool!

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Yup, that was me that posted that on reddit. That is by far the best LAN I've ever been to. If you want to check them out head to powersgaming.com

I think it's still invite only, but if you are active on their servers and mumble then you can earn a spot.

Also I dig your corsair 350D nice work!

Bluesmurph [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Thanks! Yahh... I need to update pictures and change my parts list. I've made some changes XD

dschutt84 [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Drove though Texas once in my life and was surprised that they still have smoking and non smoking sections hahaha. Us people in New York tend to live very Communist life style, we tax people who aren't even from the state. Welcome to do New York pay the toll!!!

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

Austin has actually had a no smoking inside policy for a few years now, but I think it's like the only city in Texas that has that.

Jwood013 [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

Can you upload more pictures of the build? :)

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

I'm still working on the build, but I'll take some photos of the case when I get home.

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 6 points 8 months ago

pcpartpicker is located in Austin, so obviously you're wrong :P

philip [Staff] [7 Builds] 3 points 8 months ago

I may be living in Austin, but I'm an Aggie. Very clean build (nice work!), so I'll let it slide this time. :)

Love it, can't wait to see it when it's done!

candy [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Why didn't you buy a bitfenix phenom mitx instead of ripping the handles off your prodigy?

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

I didn't have to rip them off they unscrew. I'm waiting for the orange spray paint to arrive so I can paint them and then I will put them back on.

candy [3 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Oh okay I thought you were case modding and you didn't want the handles on the prodigy...

boxxybrownn [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

this is the greatest thing ive ever seen on pcpartpicker

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

I just had it plugged in to an older monitor for testing purposes before I move it to my real battlestation.

This build is amazing, thinking a bout doing a similar build, but in a fractal node 304, and Clemson theme :D

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Make sure you send me a link. I'd like to see that build, the fractals look awesome!

Beautiful build!

James710 1 point 5 months ago

Nice build but that is THEE smallest case I have ever seen

zSyzygy [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

This bitfenix is pretty popular. There's a few smaller cases out there, one of em has a build on this site! Barely bigger than an xbox.

BASSIC_RZ [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Chalkstick 1 point 1 month ago

Wow, that's a really good looking PC! :D

RyneSmith [4 Builds] 0 points 8 months ago

I'm not a Longhorns fan :P however that GPU looks fantastic man, awesome job!

Very excited to see the finished product! +1

EDIT : Did you paint the GPU yourself? What paint did you use and do you have any other pictures from the painting process? Would love to see those!

wkernan [Submitter] [1 Build] 4 points 8 months ago

Yes painted it myself, first time trying anything like that, but wasn't as bad as I thought. I don't have any pics from painting, was being lazy. For the orange I used Montana Gold and the white I just picked up a can from local Home Depot. As far as painting and prep, this post helped me a lot.

RyneSmith [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Cool thanks for the link!

Mediciu5 [2 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Seriously, that link rocks for paint prep and other mod work. Thanks!
