Description

Looking to build a quiet, High performance, all purpose, reliable computer I decided to use Noctua fans. But what about the fan colors? Hummmm

Gaming? check

Light video editing? You know, phone stuff. check

Picture editing? check

Playing music? check

Fast? check

Folding@home? check

Well, why fight it and here are the results.

Some of the parts I already had from my last build so all are not new. (780, ssd, keyboard, mouse, headphones, monitor)

Update: Took advantage of Holiday specials 2013 and upgraded the 780 to 780 Classified, installed sound card and upgraded the PSU to handle the higher amps/watts the video card needs when playing with custom BIO's.

Update 2: Took advantage of Holiday specials 2014 and upgraded the 840 to 2 Intel 730 SSDs in Raid 0 and changed the GPU to an ASUS 980 STRIX.

Looks pretty much the same.

Details
Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor

Asus GeForce GTX 980 4GB STRIX Video Card

The squirrel adds a nice touch to the build.

8F01C198997 [8 Builds] 27 points 14 months ago

When will it drop its seeds?

deVIZtation [4 Builds] 15 points 14 months ago

Awesome build. You should totally do brown cable sleeving, that would look amazing.

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 3 points 14 months ago

Thanks deVIZ. I did look into that and could not find a source for brown/tan cables. Lots of reds, white, purple etc. I guess not to much demand for brown. Do you know of one?

AanetiKalma1707 4 points 14 months ago

http://www.ebay.com/usr/ensourced quality cables at a good price. He also has colors to match this build. Or he can make you a custom cable from any color you choose.

rockcem 2 points 5 months ago

Hey, I might be super late but on the AOC Q2963PM how are the speakers? Because I am looking to buy it and i'm not quite sure if it is good.

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

To be honest I have never used the speakers in the monitor so really cant say. The monitor it self is AMAZING tho.

basedgodunicorns [1 Build] 9 points 14 months ago

try not to get the squirrel caught in the fan blades

otherwise, nice build

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 8 points 14 months ago

WOW

I came home from work and checked out the comments and I have to say I am quite floored at the response my build has received.

Many Thanks to everyone that has given the build an up vote and I do enjoy the comments both good and bad.

Now maybe the build fever will go away....for awhile!!

Starlana [2 Builds] 4 points 13 months ago

Never, I just scrolled through 18 pages to look at this one again. It's just...fantastic!

bringtheicecream 1 point 13 months ago

Me too, although this depth is ridiculous, I can't get over your build :)

Hakumisoso [2 Builds] 1 point 14 months ago

Your build is awesome. Maybe that is why the comments are nice.

theonelonewolf [1 Build] 5 points 14 months ago

Woody just gave me, well, you know... an acorn! <.<

+1 and a hat tip. Good job!

Broadsky 4 points 14 months ago

Nice build! where did you get the vinyl wrap?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 5 points 14 months ago

Thanks! Its Contact Paper found at Home Depot. It took as long to wrap the case as to build it. Real PITA. I wanted to keep the wood grain consistent so the whole case is wrapped in one sheet. The sheet is only 1/4" wider than the case so not much wiggle room not to mention air bubbles and careful scoring along the case lines.

LeoonF 3 points 14 months ago

wow, finally a build that compliments noctuas colour choice on their fans :O

Sjk20 3 points 11 months ago

can I get the specs on the Squirrel

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 3 points 11 months ago

Kind of hard to pin down as he is kind of SQUIRRELLY !!

Starlana [2 Builds] 2 points 14 months ago

I ******* love creativity. I'd give you +2 if I could for that alone; and your build rocks, to boot. You have my respect. <3 Starlana <3

millerjd0315 [1 Build] 2 points 13 months ago

This is just amazing +1. I was just browsing through some of the top rated builds just to check them out and wow, this is one piece of work! I always wanted to do a wood case build but I never really knew how to do it (or how I wanted to do it) real wood seems next to impossible with out professional grade tools, and I wondered what vinyl would look like after is was all put together. eventually I lost the motivation to go for it. Great build, beautiful design, and awesome creativity! Thank you sir for your inspiration and reigniting my desire for a wooden case.

nice

WickedRG 1 point 14 months ago

Man this looks beautiful i wish i could have it... how does it run with the 780?? and the squirrel you know made my day!! nice build man and it looks really cool

Anthozoa 1 point 14 months ago

Very very nice,I would have left the case alone though, I like it a lot better than the wood mod.

What gave you this idea?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 14 months ago

I wanted to some how incorporate the colors of the Noctua Fans since they have those "unique" colors. Like most people I love the performance but don't really care for the colors and this is what I came up with. Thinking outside the box..... literally.

daes79 [3 Builds] 1 point 14 months ago

What are the CPU temps

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 14 months ago

At this point I have only ran the computer for a short time as I am redoing my whole desk set up. Ran SETI@home for about an hour which utilizes all available recourses @ 100% and the temp at Idle was 29-30c and loaded with all cores @ 117% cpu usage at 57% max freq. @ 62-63C using the Thermal Radar to control the fan speeds which were all around 900-1000 (cpu & case fans). The 780 was running 70c with fan @ 40 % software controlled.

daes79 [3 Builds] 1 point 14 months ago

Thats pretty good.

sqielyr 1 point 14 months ago

We're not in Kansas anymore.

mzimmerman23 1 point 10 months ago

Someone had to say it... Yeah, what's with that picture; I must be missing something?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 9 months ago

Hey bro.

My screen name is liqgranite (liquid granite) I drive a concrete truck for a living. I thought it might tie the two together.

Maybe I should remove it.?

mzimmerman23 1 point 9 months ago

Oh, okay. Naw, I was just wondering, now I understand! I thought maybe it had to do with your picture editing...also, I'm from Kansas.

Spencer1012 [2 Builds] 1 point 14 months ago

You made the Noctuas fit in with something.

Cookie for you.

Rangerfan513 [2 Builds] 1 point 14 months ago

:') is all i can say

+1 From Me

Firebomber4 1 point 13 months ago

Great build, definitely +1 :) and I think a white or green case (rather than black) would be great too :D

end0 1 point 13 months ago

Awesome! I really want some noctua fans but I can't stand the color, but they actually look great with your color scheme.

leftyrojas430 [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

???????????? I...am just... Speechless!!! Awesome build man. How are you liking the monitor?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

Thanks for the comment!

I really like the monitor and the the field of view it has. Colors are better than a TFT monitor.

Chunkmen 1 point 12 months ago

one problem that i see or at least inefficiency that you don't have 2 fans on your heat sink and with a noctua fan why not do two because just running one it would be easier to just get a water cooling system.I do love your specs though.

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 12 months ago

Thanks for the complement. The reason I did not use 2 fans are:

  1. Reviews of the cooler show that it only brings down the temps by 1-2c with 2 fans.

  2. Since there is not a lot of space from the cooler to the rear fan, it would crowd the rear fan and I wanted to ensure good air flow thru the case.

I actually bought a second fan with the intentions of using it on the cooler but decided not to use it for the reasons above.

I did not consider water cooling in this build as I Fold@home (looking for cures for Cancer,Alzheimer's http://folding.stanford.edu/home/ ) frequently and did not want to have to have any issues while to computer is running at full speed unattended for days on end.

A water system has more points of possible failure (pump, fans, coolant lines) vs just 1 fan.

lachrymal 1 point 11 months ago

Hydro dip? Reminds of school years and every single desk I sat at for 12 years had that finish. Take that however you wish.

YoanTeodosiev [1 Build] 1 point 11 months ago

Someone told me that i have a wooden PC. I send him this.

JamMaster 1 point 10 months ago

78 Celsius is extremely hot

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

Ya, your right. Back when I was benching it when it was new with crazy voltages (custom BIOS) it would get hit its thermal limit before throttling. Finally got it dialed in and runs 1224 @ 61C now. Thanks for pointing it out.

scorza 1 point 10 months ago

GORGEOUS! And I say that as a metal minimalist.

Beesuu 1 point 10 months ago

Hey I just installed 7 noctua fans on my 750d and had trouble using the rubber grommets for install but it wont stay properly, its not stable. So I used the standard screws, is it me?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

On the fans I used the rubber grommets on, I had to pull really hard on the end of the grommet to get the retaining nub all the way thru the fan to secure the fan. When space to pull was limited, I just used the screws.

Beesuu 1 point 10 months ago

Oh... yeah my technician had trouble using rubber grommets, so we used screws for everything, maybe my case was different the 750d.

ThatFancyPenn 1 point 7 months ago

Well that must have taken a LOT of work. Good job! Very surprised to see the Noctua fans actually look good in a build :)

Kurama_the_Crimson_Foix 1 point 7 months ago

where did the wood covering come from, that is cool

openuser [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

you made the noctua colour scheme fit!!! thumbs up :)

diggernick [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

how is that monitor for gaming?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 7 months ago

I like it alot for the wide field of view it offers and the better colors that an IPS screen offers over TN panels.

This is the review that turned me onto this format and does a great job of telling the pros and cons of it:

GamerDeso 1 point 6 months ago

Some players be saying "your PC made of wood, no wonder its slow" until they are met by a surprise. Your PC is a full low blow towards those gamers who talk trash and comparing slow PCs to wood... and they deserve that low blow.

WillrusWalrus 1 point 6 months ago

Forget the build... THE SQUIRREL ZOMG amazing build +1

EPICGUY23 1 point 3 months ago

That's probably the first time that noctua fans look alright ;) +1 Very creative

KrazyKazzyGuy [1 Build] 1 point 3 months ago

How do you like the SP2500s? Do they have window shaking bass?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 3 months ago

Hey Bro:

I do like the speakers for listening to music and gaming. Dont know about window shaking bass tho. You would think it would as big as the bass box is.

KrazyKazzyGuy [1 Build] 1 point 3 months ago

Thanks a lot for replying. ;) Would you recommend any other speakers for $250 that are good for gaming and music with quite a lot of bass?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 3 months ago

Cant say that I can. You might check reviews on Amazon and Newegg.

KrazyKazzyGuy [1 Build] 1 point 3 months ago

Ok thanks!

Variable.variables 1 point 2 months ago

How did you make the case look like wood?

kmiester 1 point 1 month ago

faceplam

Bravosgrad 1 point 1 month ago

best wooden pc known to man

CompletelyLost 1 point 25 days ago

Truly awesome build! The wood is very nice, and the noctua fans look great on this pc! Is no dust filter on the top cover not a problem for you?

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 25 days ago

Thanks for the compliment! No filter has not been a problem for me as the PC sits on top of the desk and we have no pets. A 450D would be a great substitution.

CompletelyLost 1 point 20 days ago

Thank you for the reply! Good thing to know about the dust filter... I hope that you get to make more original builds soon :)

OMG where did you buy the squirrel? :D nice build, love the wood theme (quite jaleous)

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 days ago

Picked it up at US Toy. It is a store geared towards teaching/teachers.

Thanks for the compliment !

Can you post a photo with the STRIX installed? Really curious to see how it fills the case :D

liqgranite [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 6 days ago

Added per your request Sir. Not the best pics but it does show the updates. I need to dust more often!! lol

OldBoy 1 point 5 days ago

Thank you, it shows more than enough what I wanted to see. Really awesome PC you have there, enjoy :D

YourLocalPCNoob [1 Build] -3 points 14 months ago

Wait so this is an R4 wrapped with wood wrap? I thought you actually cut/carved out the wood to make the build. Nice squirrel btw.
