Description

Edit: Thank PCPP for the feature! So excited! Thank you all for your positive comments - it makes all of the hard work that much more worth it!

Hope you all enjoy this write up and photos as I did building my new desk and PC!

So I built my first PC around this time last year and man - I was hooked. I slowly began with an upgraded GPU, memory and PSU. After I started seeing the performance and efficiency gains - I moved up to the Formula mobo and SLI 980Ti Hybrids. The next evolution came next:

About 2 months ago, I began my search for a desk that could hold 3 monitors and still keep my PC off the ground (and visible) - none existed. I then decided I was going to build my own. I drew it up and was on my way. The desk is made of red oak (trim and unfinished 3 1/4" flooring) and 2x4 framing. I then finished it in tung oil. For the frame, I bought 2x2 thin wall steel, welded the frame up, wire brushed the surface and then applied a clear satin sealer.

Besides weighing a metric ton, this desk achieves everything I wanted in a desk. I truly like how I have some upper shelves and a huge area behind my monitors for my cables to live, makes cable management a breeze.

So after a couple weeks of long nights I got the desk home and decided I wanted a PC to match the level of fit and finish I felt I achieved in the desk. So I ordered up the parts I was missing and set off assembling the following:

CPU: i6700K - Popular and stable. I run mine conservatively at 4.5 Ghz and it powers through anything that I need.

CPU Cooler: Using an H100i v2 with 2 Corsair High Performance SP120's in pull, exhaust. The SP's can get loud when they reach 2300 rpm but it's very rare they ever push up that high.

Motherboard: Basically my requirements were RGB lighting, M.2 functionality and clean lines. The Asus Formula VIII (despite the price) has been awesome to work with. Sound quality is excellent I might add.

RAM: 2 x 8GB Corsair Dominator 3200 Mhz - fast and looks great with the light bar upgrade.

GPU's: 2 x EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrids in SLI. The sweet, succulent center pieces of the build. Love, love, love these cards. Run at 48C and 46C at full load. The card can both run 1570 mhz and 3970 mhz OC's comfortably.

8362 - FireStrike Ultra http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9711881

14319 - FireStrike Extreme http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9697230

GPU Coolers: Using 4 High Performance SP120's in push/pull (2 each card) as intake to my case

Other case fans: 1 AF120 High Performance as intake on the bottom front of the case, 1 AF120 High Performance as the top exhaust, 1 Noctua NF-A14 2000 PWM as rear exhaust

Case: Phanteks Entho Evolv ATX - Gray: Love this damn case, cable management is awesome, made a few mods to make the work the way I want but my temps have been solid. I also love that it is color neutral and I can use my LED's to change the feel of my PC.

Monitors:

1 x Dell S2716DG - Love this thing! 144hz, 1440p, 1ms, DP and HDMI ports. Looks fantastic for a TN panel once properly calibrated. I run my PS4 on it and it does a great job with scaling up 1080p. The thin bezel is a really classy touch.

2 x DellS2740L - Bought these for work and are the best bang for you buck IPS monitors that I have seen. Really awesome productivity and secondary monitors.

Speakers/Headphones/DAC/Amps:

AKG K712 - unreal clarity and accurate representation of music and audio. Nothing crazy in the low end but I have some Massdrop Fostex TH-X00's on the way to cover that.

Schiit Audio Modi 2 Uber DAC - great connectivity and the sound is amazing for the price. Super clean aesthetics too. I don't use any equalizers or enhancements anywhere and the sound is on point.

Schiit Audio Magni 2 Uber Headphone Amp - The K712's are tough to drive but this handles them with ease. The uber version has a preamp out that is really nice to drive active speakers or in my case my 2.1 Bose set up.

Bose Companion 5 Speakers - pack a punch in a small footprint

Astro A50s - overall I am happy with this wireless headset - use them for PS4 when I need to use a mic

Future upgrades: Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB M.2, 2 x 1440p monitors for surround gaming

Let me know what you think! Any comments or help is appreciated!

Mods - Went to try an update my parts list because the fans were wrong and I accidentally deleted my entire post, sorry!

Nicholas0628 2 points 4 months ago

Planning a build in that case as well. Looks awesome! And that desk... probably better than anything that you could buy. Great job on the build man!

InsomniJack 3 points 2 months ago

I saw this on TechSource's (Ed's) channel in his series Setup Wars, very impressive!

Pr1zeee 2 points 4 months ago

This might be a stupid thing to ask, but can you like show where the leds that you get with the hue+ are placed, and then where the extension is?

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Sure man - I am at work now - but I will add a few photos to the album later.

Pr1zeee 2 points 4 months ago

Thanks alot

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 3 points 4 months ago
Sages 1 point 4 months ago

Excellent build, love the all the LEDs! And props for that desk, amazing quality!!

ewhac 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Beautiful work on the desk. And yes, from the photos of solid oak and pine/fir 2x4 framing, it was obvious this thing was going to be heavy.

Do you have your own shop?

Did you eyeball it together, or did you start with a set of drawings?

How difficult is it to get 'round the back to the cable space?

Lovely, lovely colors. Where'd you find your computer desktop wallpaper?

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks a lot man. My family runs a commercial construction company so I grew up around tools and have access to some heavier duty stuff which absolutely helped.

I had a loose set up drawings that I started with, yes.

I have the frame legs on carpet sliders right now (I rent the house and don't to mat the carpet) which makes it easy to slide the whole thing forward.

Desktop wallpaper is homemade in photoshop - want a link?

CosmicButerGuy 2 points 4 months ago

mattravenmore 2 points 4 months ago

confuzledandlost 22 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Congrats on the feature!

It's a great build and I love what you did with the sleeving/RGB LED's! +1 from me brother!

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Thanks man! Love your 1070 SLI build

confuzledandlost 22 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Aww shucks thanks!

Seriously though, the amount of blood/sweat/tears that went into this build is astounding. I'm amazed at the dedication it must have taken to build that desk from scratch and then meticulously build an amazing PC for it.

Enjoy the PC and I hope that Les Paul is getting some love too! I have a Cherry Gibson Flying V that I haven't played in months, I feel like it's time to plug it in lol

+1 for team instinct, nice setup man!

jazzdab 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Any comment at this point is superfluous but ... WOW! I'm not sure whether the desk outshines the build itself but it's close. I like the juxtaposition of the stealth black cooling tubes against the rainbow loomed power and RGB lighting. Magnificent!

Canucks278 2 points 4 months ago

Dem rainbow cables tho

xXPUSSYSLAYER69Xx 2 points 2 months ago

Noice one! I just saw a video from TechSource of him showcasing your setup and I recognised your pc. Looks amazingly beautiful.

Beautiful,, Amazing layout of the desk too, quite a build too. Good job!

Chance0066 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Incredible job. The full color spectrum is a really nice effect. I considered doing that with my build, but opted to keep it down to 2 colors instead. Well done sir.

Damn right that sexy desk needed a beast of a machine to go with it. You should name this build beauty and the beast! Congratz man

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Good call - thanks!

Ian_Meitzler 1 point 4 months ago

Wow.. Props to you for building this beast of a PC, but I am wondering.. Why use two 980 ti's instead of the newer 10 series or even the pascal titans? Once again, you did an amazing job on this PC :)

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 6 points 4 months ago

Thanks dude - fair question for sure. I've had one of the 980Ti's for just under a year now and based on benchmarks I was seeing for 1080's - I didn't see enough of an increase to warrant selling (and taking a hit price wise) on my existing card - so I stuck with the 980Ti's. Now when the 1080Ti Hybrids release - I will upgrading my SLI to that!

Ian_Meitzler 1 point 4 months ago

Alright, sweet! Thanks for letting me know :)

DSolStyleZ 1 point 4 months ago

Really really nice build man! +1

But I have a question. I´m going to buy the Evolv too, just the Tempered Glass version of it and i want install a H115i on the top. How much work was the fan mod on the top and what exactly did you have to remove? Will 2 140mm noctua fans fit there?

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks man!

Honestly it's pretty easy (relative term) - take a look here - https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/477097-phanteks-enthoo-evolv-atx-top-fan-cavity-mod/

DSolStyleZ 1 point 4 months ago

TedTheOperator 1 point 4 months ago

Absolutely amazing! What did you use to finish the wood? It looks great! +1

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thank you! The red oak is finished using Tung Oil Mix (Minwax)

TedTheOperator 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks a bunch! I appreciate it!

romanvalkre 4 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

+1 Great looking rig, and I love the desk build. Did you create any plans for it... could you create another?

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks a lot man - I did roughly draw it up in CAD and new some maximum sizes I wanted to stay under for efficiency of building materials. I made some minor changes along the way.

I mean I could create another - feel free to reach out if you are looking for something in particular

SuperGojira2001 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Badass SLI bridge!

Meithen 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Wow, really cool idea with the cables!

And that desk, amazing!

Laett 1 point 4 months ago

wow.. just wow! your build deserve to be in setup wars.. or if your feel better it deserve to be one of my wallpapers. Awesome, your trully a perfeccionist pc man. Great desk, great cable managment and great distribution of the pc and the pheripherals. Great everything :D

Just one thing.. that fan in the bottom of the front panel is not aligned.. please dont ruin this beautiful with that.. just dont. Oh and the led strips place them more inside the pc.. just doesnt look good

Over all, perfect build, you are the man here ;)

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

I just submitted to Ed today - hopefully I make it!

Thanks for the input

The front 120 that's out of alignment is because I am waiting on some bolts and nuts to arrive because there are no pre-threaded holes for a 120mm fan - I had to tap the screws that are shown myself.

I'll think about the LEDs - I like how simple and consistent they are

hungry_kirby 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

In love with that desk. In fact Ive been browsing for a new desk and 100% agree no desk exist that will comfortably give enough real estate for triple monitors plus having the pc on the desk in plain sight. I have PB287q 4k monitor which is 28 inches as well as 2 LG 24 inch monitors with no place to put them. I considered making my own desk but had nothing to go by to spark inspiration but now there's this! I will basically having the same setup along with the small audio station but i may minus the desk hutch.

hungry_kirby 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Oh yes and the PC is super tasteful and conservative too +1

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

glad I could be an inspiration!

I like the rainbow theme a lot, however it irks me that there are no rainbows on the keyboard or mouse, why is that?

LonghornAlamo2040 1 point 4 months ago

I really love and appreciate these builds when there is a lot of effort, thought and energy is put into a DIY job.

Great Job!

May your new rig and setup serve you well for a long time :)

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks!

av8rarky 5 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Wow. This is awesome. I have no idea why but I just love the fact that the entire build is a neutral monotone color and the sleeved cables are the only colored items. Love it. Great work.

Only thing missing is a Nyan Cat decal somewhere...

SirMints 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Holy cow. So awesome. Love the simplicity of the end result.

brianchangpcs 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Amazing build.. this is breathtaking! May I ask why you bought the NZXT Extension Kit while you only used the 4 that already comes with the kit? I may be mistaken but NZXT's website says it comes with 4 led strips.

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Good question and thank you!

The extension kit is used for the LEDs in my desk. I have an extension that runs out of my case and into my desk behind my shelves and then behind my monitors. That way I can coordinate my PC and desk together - color wise.

PokeCatz 1 point 4 months ago

This should represent #pcmasterrace

Reprisalgaming 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

How long have you been saving to get this?

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

About 3-4 months. I had some of the parts already and I get to buy building materials wholesale which helped my cause!

Reprisalgaming 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Im still trying to save for my 1500 pc any tips?

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Well I break up my pay checks into different bank accounts using direct deposit. This allows me to split my money before I ever see it. I have an account designated for spending on fun that I set aside some money each week for.

Reprisalgaming 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Oh wow that's cool, im still working on my build I've been watching youtube but i can't understan the fans and battery cables

Wolfemane 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Jomack16 1 point 4 months ago

OMG, i have that same charging/data transfer cable! they are the best! This somehow makes me feel like this desk and pc build are achievable, even though I would have to go back to being single to devote that much time and space to a project.

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Haha they are good cables. Very durable.

No need to be single but it does make diverting money a little easier when you are ;)

alfa42 1 point 4 months ago

I love those custom PSU cables :__

StickyStix 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

I love the rainbow cables! I've never seen them before! :) This is one of my favorite setups, and it inspires me to make my setup + PC awesome when I make it happen. +1

Volkov 1 point 4 months ago

The computer is impressive, but the desk beats it. That mounting set up is ridiculous. Cable management = win. What mount is that for your monitors? I love craftsmanship! This has it 10 fold. Well done. Gave me like 3-4 ideas for my desk ( I would like to build a custom one myself ) There's not many desks I like out there. +1k if I could

Blake_Houston 1 point 4 months ago

If you have not already, I would totally submit this to ed at TechSource on Youtube for best desk setup. This is insane man, love it.

RaWBuilder01 1 point 4 months ago

This is truly one of the most impressive and beautiful builds I have seen in a while because of how well thought out and meticulous it is. From the computer and the cable management all around to the desk, which should last a very long time, everything is truly top notch and you definitely earned an up vote from me.

LOD_DTOM 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

what is the purpose of the top front fan? seems kind of contradictory to the positive airflow.

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 2 months ago

I'm assuming you are talking about the upper front fan - I use it mostly to ensure no dust re-enters my build from the upper chamber area. With the fans above the rad being so close to the top of the case I wanted to make sure the dust never re-circulated in the camera.

O....M.....G.....

guiterboy28 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Very nice build! Looks amazing! I got a couple questions, how do you like the Dell S2716DG? I'm looking to pick that up myself. Also what is your fan curve like that you only get about 48C under load and if you would know the ambient temp when tested? I have the same card (link to my build here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/guiterboy28/saved/4zNNGX) but the temps go over 50C.

RickWilson submitter 3 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

Hey man - thank you very much.

On my work computer so I'll follow up with some specifics.

Monitor - I really enjoy the monitor but it most definitely needs the proper adjustment to make it shine. I tweaked my NVIDIA desktop color and gamma settings to clean it up. I have it next to 2 IPS monitors and the blacks are probably a 9.5/10 compared to those. I also love having an HDMI input for my PS4.

Fan Speeds - I'll have to check this when I get home. But the fans are in push/pull. The push fan is connected to my fan header which runs pretty aggressively (above 1100 rpm) at all times and the pull fan (connected to the GPU) runs the stock fan curve on the GPU.

My machine is probably not the quietest out there but I prefer to sacrifice a little bit of ambient noise for cooler temps.

Hope this helps!

I fought with that decision for a month or two - ultimately I like how the exposed edges of the case and LEDs are concealed with the regular case. The acrylic that Phanteks used on this case seems to be far more durable than my old H440.

The tempered case is super sexy as well. No doubt.

yeah but the glass has black edges so you could e able to hide those strips. But super nice build anyways.

Nice computer but the price is very daunting. I'm happy with my $350 build using the AMD FX 4350 processor, MSI 970A SLI Krait Edition motherboard. Kingston Hyper X Fury 8Gb 1866Mhz Black RAM, Asus GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB STRIX Video Card, and Deepcool TESSERACT WH ATX Mid Tower Case.
