Description

I originally built this in 2014, this is an updated (and improved) build The original build can be seen here. The main problem with that build was the video card. I didn't research well and had a friend choose most of the parts for me.

Anyway, on to this current setup. I really enjoy it. I recently got an internship that pays well and gives me weekends off so I have the time and money to invest in this machine right now so I figured why not!

Updated from the past build is:

  • The stock cpu cooler

  • The video card

  • Added 2 fans

  • New Keyboard

  • Different mouse

  • Put a little drawer in the second drive bay

All of the prices are fixed to what I had paid for them at the time and unfortunately some of the parts were way more expensive back in 2014!

I use this primarily for gaming and of course I browse the web. It runs everything on ultra right now with this video card- it's amazing considering what else I have had experience with. My previous card after the radeon was a gigabyte ge force GTX 660 which ran everything at medium or high quality, and could sometimes run things at ultra, but truth be told I was a little scared to run things at ultra; it was by no means a wimpy card though on its own and it was a HUGE upgrade from that radeon I made the mistake of purchasing.

So far all of the parts I have have worked really well for me and I haven't had any problems. I did end up taking one of the insulating panels off of the top of the case though to put up a fan since now my pc is getting warmer, and it has helped.

A couple of part reviews from the list since I can't review the custom parts??

  • The K70 RGB LUX keyboard is amazing. It's my first mechanical keyboard and I love it

  • The LED strips that I bought are alright- nothing special. I sort of wish I had bought magnetic strips though because the tape keeps getting unstuck where I applied one strip at the top of the case. Otherwise, they work fine.

  • I think the little drawer is really cool and convenient. It holds my external drive and my LED controller as well as spare screws. Hell you could even put some snacks in there (joking of course don't put snacks in your computer)

All comments and critiques are appreciated! Thanks for checking my build out! Let me know if you want to see the build from any other angles and I'll snap a pic! I'm also going to put the benchmarks I ran up later

Part Reviews

CPU

works well and with an upgraded cooler works well-er

CPU Cooler

Nice cooler 9/10 would recommend

Motherboard

Love it, had no problems. I like the amount of hookups and ports it has; lots of room for upgrading and has a nice aesthetic, sturdy.

Storage

Have had no problems with this, haven't heard any weird noises, works well

Video Card

Love the looks love the performance love the card 10/10 she's beautiful

Case

I wish there was a little more space in the back for cable management because I have to sometimes force the panel back on and finagle with the wires quite a bit to get it to close, but otherwise I love this case. It looks nice, it's sturdy, and I like the door and side panel window. my only other complaint is that it's heavy so taking it anywhere is a little taxing on these arms, but that's really not that big of a deal 2 birds 1 stone get buff when you take it to a LAN party

Power Supply

I've had no problems with it, works well and is an ample amount of power for my setup.

Optical Drive

I probably spent too much on this but it reads blu rays and zoo tycoon like a champ.

Operating System

I generally dislike windows 8.1 but I needed an os and didn't want to deal with trying to find 7 for some reason I can't remember it was 2014

Wireless Network Adapter

it works. 8/8 gr8 m8. The software it comes with works too and I get a signal. that's enough for me

Case Fan

Good airflow, good looks, worked out of the box. Don't make the same mistake I did and try to test out which way the air is flowing by trying to put a cotton square near it and instead put your finger in it. 10/10 scared me and hurt my finger a little bit, but that rpm was good.

Case Fan

Came with the case, works well. I'm using them for the front intake right now

Case Fan

Decent fan for the price and moves a good bit of air. Don't put the finger near

Monitor

I like this monitor it looks good and it's a good size for me and even though my video card might be overkill for this monitor it serves me well and I'll have it for a few more years I imagine.

Mouse

It's a mouse, I got it for free 5/5.

Headphones

The mic on this really picks up the sounds of chips when you eat them if that gives any insight to the quality. The sound quality is pretty nice too, overall I like these headphones. They're simple and they work nicely.

External Storage

It works and it also works with a mac which I have so that's why I went with this one. It was also well reviewed.

Great looking build. How well does that Cryorig C7 cool the I5??

hbergberg submitter 2 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks! I would say it cools pretty well! Better than the stock cooler- of course it doesn't cool as well as the more heavy duty ones, but still relatively well!

Sick build! I would like to build this someday, and I love the color scheme because it is my scheme as well - black and blue. Amazing build, but is your PSU upside down..? Probably just me. Epic build, great work!

hbergberg submitter 2 Builds 1 point 3 months ago

Thank you so much!! Yes it is upside down you could say- the air intake for it is on the bottom of my computer and it pushes air out the back. I figured this would be better for heat management when I first built it! Thanks for your comment I wish you luck in your building endeavors!!

how did you get the GPU to glow blue?

hbergberg submitter 2 Builds 1 point 2 months ago

I downloaded the gigabyte xtreme utility and changed the LED color on the logos from there!
