Finally hunkered down to do a DX11 / 64 bit build after milking my Qx6850 rig for all it was worth. Obviously wanted to go red and black.
That, ladies and gents, is a work of art.
Thanks :) Just added a few extra pics
Should i get that
OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ-FTY1000W Power Supply?
Pretty sure this computer was built by Darth Maul
Or Darth Sidious so Maul could use it...
lols, it looked like you used a sleeping bag for the background of the photo shoot. nice build!
hahaha . . . discerning eye . . . it is a sleeping bag.
AWESOME MOD! There needs to be more of these - I'm doing one soon myself, ROG with red acrylic'n'engraving and stuff
One question: why didn't you go awesome with red and black and roll with an ROG something (Matrix 7970 or Maximus V) or an AsRock Fatal1ty something?
Thanks :) I'll look forward to seeing your build.
I looked at a few different black and red boards. Ultimately the thermal armor just sucked me in on this board . . . looks so stealthy.
I had an Air Force upbringing and have been obsessed with the SR-71 since I was a little kid which I think is why I'm such a sucker for black and red combos -- Probably why the "stealthy" look of the thermal armor sold me :)
maybe you went a little overkill with that psu?
LOL . . . I knew that would be the first comment :D
I liked the pre-sleeved 100% modular cables. I also liked that it was red and black (though I ended up doing custom decals on it like everything else). Basically the red/black 100% modular sold me on it... I know it's massive overkill as far as wattage goes, though.
hey... if you got the money, whose to stop you? haha nice build, cable management looks fantastic!
lol. . . I aint gonna lie, though . . . I at times kick myself for spending the extra there when it could've gone towards a 4gb 670 :D
Thanks for the comments though :)
Trust me, you're fine on the 2gb 670's. By the time you would need 4gb of VRAM for anything other than a multi-montior setup, the 670 will be obsolete. Great build overall! Even though red and black is little cliche, it just seems to work with all of the decals. Although, from the pictures, it looks as if the aluminum on the side of the case is stained from fingerprints. It is very easy to see the spots.
It is a booger to keep clean. The worst is the window . . . seems to be dirty no matter what I try :-/
Wow. This is beautiful.
Thank you :D
I usually add upvotes for one of two reasons: 1) an intelligently budgeted build. or 2) a champ at cable management who doesn't have the benefit of an overpriced case. in this case, there is not a big enough upvote button for me to click. that is just pretty. If your gonna spend a used Honda on a computer, do it in style. Well done.
Thank you! This is only my third ground-up build in 20 years of being a computer nerd. I knew it was going to have to last me a long time since my next ground-up build will probably be five or seven years down the road. So like you said, I wanted to build something I'd be proud to look at for the next half a decade or more even when I'm lamenting the fact that my mobo doesn't support the latest and greatest socket or fully harness the power of the latest and greatest GPU :) I'm happy with how it turned out . . . my wife makes fun of me for looking at it whenever I walk by it . . . can't help it . . . haha.
oh my dayum! super cool mod
Nice Build and loven the red and black theme
Thank you. I worked for a long time in the large format printing industry. I designed all of the decals in illustrator and then had a friend at one of the places I used to work print and cut everything for me. Definitely happy with how it turned out :)
sweet pc congrats
Thank you :) It was a fun build.
wow gorgeous build,... im doing a ROG theme build myself very similar looking. How did you do the paint job on the corsair cooler?(what paint etc.)
& How is your monitor? was looking into the korean market of monitors myself...
Thank you! I'll look forward to seeing your build.
The only paint I used for customizing this build was on the fans. Everything else is vinyl decals. The larger Nvidia logos are cut vinyl, and the H100, PSU, and GPU decals are printed & cut. I designed all of the decals myself in illustrator and then had a local sign company where I used to work print and cut everything for me.
I love this monitor! It's absolutely gorgeous. I have it on a three-point articulating wall mount from Amazon that gives me full range of motion and no desk clutter. I lucked out with only three stuck pixels -- one on the bottom left and two on the upper right. I never notice them unless specifically hunting for them.
Also, there's a company that just started selling custom PCBs for these monitors that potentially allow up to 120hz. Only downside is they don't guarantee anything and you can't even return them and they're a whopping $260. They're selling complete monitors as well. You might check them out. Overlord Computers. The monitors are based on the same LG panels as all the Korean ones on eBay but with their custom PCBs in them.
Thanks again and good luck with your build!
wow even better, just got the H110 so im going to hafta figure somthin out also...to cover or change the "white" corsair logo to match my rog theme.Classy work man I hope mine turns out half as nice as yours!,and ty Ill check out the overlord guys :)
Sweet. I'll look forward to seeing it when it comes up!
That looks really sick! Nice build and cable management! Are you planning on overclocking later?
Thanks! Definitely took some in the cable arena . . . almost makes me hesitant to add any upgrades down the line because I don't want to fudge the aesthetics :D
Forgot to edit that. She's at 4.2 right now.
Edit: 4.4 . . . just fired up p95 for temps.
Really bad *** man. Really great cable management! Although I'm not a fan of leds, it works really well. The sleeping bag background is pretty funny.
It's funny, my friends were making fun of me for using LEDs in this build because I usually make fun of LEDs. Growing up in the heyday of case modding, everyone's rig always looked like a flipping rainbow unicorn warehouse party. Like I explained in the earlier comment, though, I took measures to diffuse the light to make it more of a soft glow . . . pretty stoked with how it turned out :)
After looking at your builds I added a messy-cable pre build pic in your honor :D
Haha that's awesome man.
Just being a perfectionist, but have considered putting a little red cap or something over that green light at the bottom of the mobo? In my opinion, it wrecks the effect as soon as you see it.
We must share some OCD . . . yea, it does bug me.
I never thought about a cap. That might be something to look in to. I considered soldering a red one on there but didn't want to void my five year warranty with Asus.
how did you mount the 3 in a 1/4 hard drives in the 5 1/2 mounts?
I used this kit from Scythe to go from 5.25 down to 3.5
Then I used this Silverstone kit for the SSDs. Scuffed it and painted it black like everything else, though.
I say this is the SICKEST red and black build I've ever seen. Nice use of contrast, nothing is too bright. Typically I dislike red and black builds because they seem too "intimidating" for me but this is NICE.
Thank you! Really appreciate it :) I was pretty stoked with how everything turned out :D
That really is a beautiful looking setup. Personally, I'll just be going for raw power rather than external beauty though. My plan is to get the 4GB 670 so that I can use a multiple monitor setup. I'll be using Surround on my monitors along with an accessory "monitor" which will likely be my HDTV.
I kind of wish I had gotten the 4gb but I don't run multiple monitors so I don't think it'd matter. Hopefully right about the time it starts to matter the next best thing will be out :)
very nice red/black theme!! awesome, heavy duty mobo too? haha :)
Thank you! Very much appreciate it.
I spent a lot of time in planning and execution . . . I was pretty proud of how it turned out :)
Epic clean build. Serious props.
Thank you! Much appreciated :)
Excellent work. Came here from your post on the Lifehacker thread. Here's my recent build-- I'm jealous of your use of red and black, that's what I was going for. http://pcpartpicker.com/b/zYu
Thanks! Just upvoted your build . . . looks good!
I had to customize flipping everything on here to get the colors right . . . nothing came JUST the way I wanted :)
Very nice build! I wish I had a budget like that...
I didn't spend quite this much . . . I actually got the 3770k, one of the SSDs, and the G9x for free (long stories). It was still a lot of money for me, though. I don't expect to get to build another one for another 5-8 years so wanted to do it right :)
This is Beautiful! Amazing black with red theme well done!
Thank you :)
Probably the most impressive build I've seen on here to date. Really impressive. Hats off.
Wow! Thank you! With all the time that goes in to a project like this it's awesome to get such great feedback. Thanks again :)
This is awesome
That is one beautiful machine Liquid. Big ups!
BTW, How do you like the Crucial SSD's? Thinking about using one for my first build.
Thank you! Much appreciated . . . many many hours went into pulling off the look :)
I'm pretty pleased with the Crucial M4s. In all honesty, I have nothing to compare them to. For a lot of the stuff on this build where aesthetics weren't an issue I just looked for reasonably-priced stuff with solid reviews, and the M4s fit the bill there. I'm sure there are fast SSDs, but I figured pretty much anything I got would give me marked improvement over my old HDDs.
Also a plus, Crucial is owned by Micron who partnered with Intel (as "IMF") to produce flash memory -- so you you've got some solid names in the business behind the manufacture of these :)
Good luck with your build. I'll look forward to seeing it!
Thanks for he reply. Whatever your intentions were, your pulled of a sweet looking rig that screams performance too from all I've read in the comments.
Pretty sure I'm going with an M4 as a boot and OS drive and a HD for the rest. Nice to know some solid companies are involved. Thanks again!
Wow this is a thing of beauty, truly is an inspiration of what you can do to your PC
Thank you sir!
My God, this is amazing.
Only six more upvotes until 100, guys! Let get this man what he deserves!
I've probably pointed 20 people to this build in the last few days. The cord management, color scheme, and hardware choices make this build a work of minimalistic zen.
Much appreciated! I thoroughly enjoyed building it :)
Very impressive! I'll bet that rig is absolutely BEAST!
Thanks! It gets me by ;)
Sometimes when my wife is watching a 720p or 1080p video on the TV (which I have set up as a second monitor in the living room), while I'm playing Bioshock Inf. or something at 2560x1440 and simultaneously rendering 1080p DIVX videos in the background to burn a DVD, I just stop and think "Man . . . this rig is amazing . . . and it's going to be obsolete in four years . . ." LOL
Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous how quickly even the strongest and best computers go out of date. That's the price of advance, I guess.
does the EVGA 670 glow red out the box or is it a personal mod you did
Personal mod :)
how does one do so?
It's a 680 back plate. I bought the 670 day of release and there were no back plates for them yet. So first I used some goof off to remove the 680 logo. I bought some red LEDs at Radio shack and sanded the plastic housing down to where they were extremely thin. Then I soldered four of them together in line with some resistors and then a wiring harness to plug directly into the PSU. Sandwiched that whole get up between the back plate and the PCB with a thin sheet of polystyrene below the back plate to diffuse the light.
If you look closely toward the back of the card you can see the red power wire running behind the mobo.
Red. Light. Special. Starlana likes. +1. <3
OMG that's awesome :)
Mother of God... This is beautiful! psu is overkill but hey you got money, and other people do wayyyy worst. Going to sli? I love it dude, makes me jizz.
I do have plans to go SLI. Just don't feel it's worth it right now since I only have the one monitor. Plus I'm debating as to whether or not to sell the 2gb and jump to 4gb for the SLI setup . . . we'll see :)
refund your card? or sell it. Then jump onto sli and get more monitors to make a machine! It's still beautiful as is. Love the cable management by the way.
Thanks. Once I decided to put everything in the 5.25" bays I knew I had to go all out with the cables. The PSU came pre-sleeved but I sleeved two of the GPU cables in red to make that swoop of the GPU pop . . . figured if I couldn't hid it I may as well make it for me :)
nice pc congrats
I have noticed a trend with the corsair coolers not really doing that well under load.
Is that trend on Ivys? Ivys run a helluva lot hotter than sandys.
Also I live in middle of the flipping desert so ambient are pretty toasty here.
But yea, I was kind of shocked at how how the chip ran. I got it pretty much the day it came out and as the reviews started to trickle in I realized my temps were within normal range ...
Did you have any trouble with the H100 fitting properly in the case?
None at all, really. There are grommet holes on the top for different radiator sizes and the rad lines up perfectly.
There are clearance issues with running a push/pull config with certain mobos. Some people get it to fit by offsetting the rad and using the grill holes for their rad screws. I tried this with my setup initially using four yate loons but the thermal armor on the mobo prevented the fit from working. So, I just stuck with the factory holes in a standard push config and it fit perfectly.
No complaints so far.
I do kind of wish I had a second 670, though. Especially given the resolution of my monitor.
If you're just running 1080p it should be no problem. But if you do want top frame rates and especially if your main concern is gaming then I would look at trimming it down and trying to get another 670 . . .
Nice, nice, nice, wow this is gre--WTF stock cooler. Looks great but you could use a better heatsink than that, you could've spent it on that and not the PSU. Awesome build though!
Edit: Found this one, it looks pretty sick, not sure if it fits LGA1155 though
Edit 2: It does
Like I said, the main reason for the PSU was the aesthetics . . . and I'm glad I'm went with it in that respect. 100% modular, black & red, and completely pre-sleeved cables.
I thought about a legit water cooling set up, but I like the maintenance-free aspect of the corsair coolers. Which one were you linking to though? I don't see it in your comment.
And honestly, if I did sink any more cash into this rig I'd probably want to either get a second 670 or just start saving for the 700 series if they're worth it. . .
TY for the comments and the vote, though :)
The Prolimatech Megahalems, they come in red and are very good at cooling
Ok I have no idea what I was talking about....you have a water cooler so I am wondering what that last picture in the post is?
LOL . . .I was wondering . . . I thought maybe you were implying I should've gotten a custom loop, but then I was like dang . . . pretty sure the h100 would outperform the megahalem XD
That last picture is just to show how everything looked before I prettied it up.
I'm in grad school right now and had most of my parts accumulated toward the end of fall quarter last year. In order to pay for the 670, I had to sell my old rig. But because I was still so busy with school I had to slap everything together haphazardly and use it like that for a few weeks until finals were over . . . then I went back and re-did everything the way you see it now. So during those few weeks the h100 just sat in a box and I ran stock with no OC :)
Ah, my brain kinda farted and didn't register the other pictures also. LOL
lol. S'all gravy :D
Holy jesus... this is one of the most fantastic and aesthetically appealing builds I have EVER seen.
Wowzas! Thank you much! :)
Why did you get the Corsair H100 over the H100i?
Built this last summer right when Ivy came out -- 100i wasn't on the market yet.
Beautiful, I love the red and black theme
Great choice in gpu and cpu! I'm also using the 3770k with a Gtx670 for my computer! Love it!
Proof you don't need to spend a ton of money on a water cooling loop to make an awesome mod.
Ovbiously my favorite build... How'd you get all the decals red and the evga symbol glowing red? Also, where'd you get that sexy backplate for the 670?
Yes, I'd like to know the answer to this question also
Decals were made by a friend at a sign shop I used to work in. I drew everything in illustrator and he print and cut them for me.
The backplate was the stock one for the 680 because they didn't make one for the 670 yet. For the red glow I bought some red LEDs from radio shack, sanded them down super thing and soldered them together, then sandwiched them between the card and the backplate with a thin sheet of polystyrene to diffuse the glow.
That's a lot of storage to hold all of your...uh...cooking recipes?
Lots and lots of movies and TV shows :)
I love how you put in your comments "obviously wanted to go red and black" just in case the use of those colors was mistaken as subtle!
Very well done all around, parts/cable management/theme. I've seen custom builds with 5-6000 price tags that couldn't touch this.
I too get laughed at for taking quick glances of mine, but after seeing this my glances will be far less rewarding...sigh
Such a clean build, this is truly a masterpiece. Congrats.
I'm drooling all over myself ! This build is awesome ! Good job !
LOL. Thanks for saying so! I had a lot of fun building it :) Full on "Tweaker Mode" as my wife calls it when I get obsessed with a project and can't be stopped :D
Is it odd is build turns me on...
If so, then we're both odd!
Wow, jealous. Very jealous. Good build man.
Thats no pc anymore, thats ART
Thanks! I spent a lot of time on the aesthetics :)
Oh god man its beautiful, love the organization and color scheme, pics are especially well done for anyone but a pro photographer, i only hope i can come close when i build mine.
Thanks! Took the pictures with an old cannon point and shoot, too :) Model 710is.
hows the shimian doing.
Still kicking ***! Love this thing.
Holy Africa.. why would you not put where you got those beautiful threaded/braided cables?! Absolutely wonderful! :D
They came with the PSU! That's why I spent so much and went massively overkill on the wattage . . . it fit my color scheme and came with all of the cables individually sleeved :)
When that is turned on it scares me
It scares me when it turns me on, too.
Wait . . . what?
Good LORD that is beautiful! Is this your first build? It couldn't be... Is it?
Naw . . . probably fifth or sixth . . . been at this over 15 years :). Definitely my favorite with the most time invested, though!
And thank you!
DAMN, that's a long time! Remember the specs on your first build? It'd be an interesting throwback.
I love giving praise. Especially when it's as well deserved as yours was. :)
Sabertooth mainboards are an instant +1 for me. But the rest of the build.... Damn.
Only change I would make is use the h100i because of the leds but that is one amazing build instant +1 from me
When I built it last summer the h100i wasn't out yet.
are you going to invest in one? the logo changes colors:) and can be red.
I honestly doubt it. I'm fine with where my clocks and temps are are not. Next investment will be a second 670 or an 800 series card depending on when they come out and what my budget is.
How come the CPU cooler decal is red?
Custom made . . . GPU, Cooler, PSU, and case all had custom decals. Lots of custom paint, too :)
Wow.. Awesome build man!
Thank you! It was definitely worth all the time invested :)
Its the PC of my dream aesthetically!!! Just hope my cheap build comes out half as pretty
That is a truly beautiful machine.
That is beautiful...Just...Beautiful. Wow the work put into that man. Good job. Keep it up.
Thank you! I appreciate it! :) I definitely had a lot of fun with with it!
Sorry, this may seem a little late since this was posted like 7 months ago but where did you mount your hard drive and SSD? I can't find them anywhere.
Also what case fans are you using there and in what configuration?
There are two yate loons pulling on the radiator. I originally wanted to do push/pull, but the armor on the sabertooth wasn't playing along with that plan.
The front case fan is the 200mm stock case fan painted red and in pull configuration. The rear case fan is a noctua NF-P14 painted black/red and in push configuration.
HDD and both SSDs are mounted in the 5.25" bay using this and this.
The 7th picture shows the wiring to the drives.
hello fellow computer inthusiests i am looking for a similar built how can i bring price down while keeping perfomrance thank u in advance.
What are you looking to use it for? If just gaming, go 8gb ram and a 3570k, a way less powerful PSU, and a cheaper case. That should save you a ton right there! :)
Did you honestly sleeve all those cables yourself? If so bravo. I sleeve only the cables I cant hide usually and that takes me forever and a day. Glad to see someone with commitment to quality work.
I did all the mobo stuff, but everything off the PSU came pre-sleeved -- one of the main reasons I bought this PSU. I just redid a couple in red :)
I have honestly never ordered any pre sleeved cables that have been up to my expectations. I am really really partictular when it comes to my computer though. I sleeve my cables so I can not see the shrink wrap tubing.
this build is insane. It just looks so damn sexy.
Thanks! I had a lot of fun with it :D
Hey guys. Nice build dude! I need some help. I need to know if this build has any bottlenecks or poor choice of components. I already have the OS and optical drive also. Also, if need be I can salvage wires or parts from other old PCs that I have. Thanks for the help in advance! http://pcpartpicker.com/user/redflaggaming/saved/2WNY
What do you want to play on this?
Dude seriously you make me hate myself, hate my PC, and motivate me to put a little more work into it; all at that the same time. **** this is not even beautiful its sick.
LOL . . . that's . . . uh . . . a lot. Glad I could . . . inspire you ;D
Big Question so lets say i got the 650D with a Sabertooth motherboard and the H100i Cpu cooler. I plugged the front pannel usb into the mother board and the cpu fan in the 2 headers that are given. But i wanna use the fire wire but there is no space. is there any extender i could get to use the fire wire or am i out of luck?
Very well rounded,and solid build
What 200mm fan did you use in the front?
how is the keyboard
Great Build!!! +1!! Really liked the Evga theme!! how is that keyboard?
Loooove the red and black! Super sick bro! Check out my build?
Something tells me you like NVIDIA
How did you make it look like the GPU is glowing red? Did you just LED it all up?
Great build so I +1! One question though... why did you get an overly expensive power supply? EVGA or Corsair makes cheaper 1000+ watt PSU's. Overall great build, though!
Thanks :) I know the PSU is super overkill (both cost and wattage). I splurged on it because it fit my color scheme, was 100% modular, and came pre individually sleeved.
HISS! WHAT IS THAT LAST PICTURE? shields eyes away
yo yo it looks like http://www.dumpaday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/funny-kids.jpg
how does the cpu overclock. Don't know if I should go haswell or ivybridge.
Loving the black and red theme! Fantastic build
Where'd you get the lighting from?
Holy ****, what? Can I get backplates like that from some where, or did you custom make it? that LED on it makes it pop so hard
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Death2508/saved/#view=7cqXsY I wish my GPU was bleu
Impressive build...and I like the backlit evga backplate:) ...as I've made one myself for gtx970. Good jobe dude!
Red lighting is awesome.
This is where other pc's come to die.
Please rename to "The Furnace" :D
Red, red all over! <3
This desktop build looks simply amazing. The black and red design looks great! This has inspired me to build myself a gaming rig rather than buy a pre-built one. This is my first time building a rig so if it isn't too much trouble, id love to hear your opinion. My build has some similiarities : https://pcpartpicker.com/user/alexkizirian/saved/#view=BYLxFT
Thank you so much and amazing build! Hopefully mine ends up working similar to yours!
So is the video card the only source of that incredible lava red light? Otherwise, great build)
are you a fan of NVidia by chance? lol
LOL dat moment when your mouse costs half of my build
holy **** lol
Great cable management.
Pretty sick build and nice parts as well
This is sick!
Very nice cable management if I do say so myself.
I just use that drive for storage so the speed doesn't really matter to me. The RAID 0 SSDs give me more than enough space for all of my programs, games, and "every day use" stuff to be installed on.
This is amazing. Now, just put everything in an H440!
