First Real Build - The Mini Beast

Description

I call it my first real build because the first rig I built 4 years ago when I was 14 was more looks than performance, and I didn't really do too much research prior to ordering the parts. This time I was using my own money instead of my parents, so I did extensive research on each part. Also despite what the price on here says, I only spent about $910 thanks to http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales

Anyway I apologize for the low quality photos and here are some answers to some questions you all might ask.

Q. Why are 1 stick of 8gb instead of 2x 4gb? A. The stick was free with the purchase of the motherboard.

Q. Why are you using the stock heat sink? A. I had a hyper 212 evo, but it didn't fit, so I sold it. I'll be upgrading to water cooling in the future.

Q. You know windows 8 sucks for gaming right? A. i got it for $15, so far I haven't gotten any compatibility issues, and I downloaded a program which brought back the taskbar( second to last picture) which makes it just like windows 7.

Q. Is 500w enough for a 7950? A. It's more than sufficient, and I have enough headroom to OC the 7950 and the 3570k.

All in all I'm extremely happy with this build. It can run all the games I throw at it maxed out(Crysis 3, Planetside 2, GW2, and LoL), and I couldn't be happier.

Thank you good sir.

They should make it so you can change the picture that shows before you click the build. The one I have now probably won't attract people to click on it lol.

Btw, have you checked startisback (http://startisback.com/#features-tab) which costs $3 for 2 licenses? Is it a better alternative to Start8 for the price?

nice! only thing wrong i see is the vga cable in the back :P

bgleonarda [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

Thanks! Yea, I built the computer at home and didn't have the monitor I use in my dorm. So I had to use a monitor that was like 5 years old lol, 5 years ago that monitor was like an ips 1440p to me lol.

Great little build! "Q. You know windows 8 sucks for gaming right?" Actually Windows 8 doesn't - I along with many other people I know compared it with fresh installs of 7 and 8 actually boots faster, and loads games faster as well. Most people who don't like 8 just don't like change which is why they do what you did and bring the task bar back and other stuff. I actually don't use Metro, don't really like it but I'm found the layout and functionality to be refreshing once I got use to how it works. Anyways once again good build - Most people don't know that within each tier of graphics cards they perform differently such as your 7950 vs another. They usually assume all 7950s perform the same but its not true - yours is built nearly identical to its 7970 brother. It has the same power connections and everything. All those reviews that showed the 7950 being the overclocking monster were done on cards like this. Good choice!

Have you overclocked the card at all? Do you know if yours is voltage locked? anyways happy gaming!!

Only real two things I can see improving this build is getting a 2nd stick of memory so you are running in dual channel and an SSD ;)

bgleonarda [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

I currently have it running at 1120 core and 1600 memory and I believe the voltage isn't locked. My upgrade path is most likely going to be a sdd --> a water cooler --> another stick of ram.

Jimmy 1 point 16 months ago

Apropos, I have a question about SSD's and Windows 8. Windows 8 already boots and loads games faster as you just said, so what will adding an SSD do to make it worth it's cost? Do games just have faster loading speeds?

IamApropos [3 Builds] 1 point 16 months ago

load screen and game loading all around yes.

Jimmy 1 point 16 months ago

Okay, thanks. I was just curious because Windows 8 already has fast boots and load screens.

IamApropos [3 Builds] 1 point 16 months ago

well yes but not compared to a SSD. I'm talking maybe 5-10 second difference where an SSD is quite a bit faster.

Jimmy 1 point 16 months ago

Oh wow. I didn't realize it was that big of a difference =D. Sounds like I need to get an SSD more than I originally thought lol.

Fastmaster7 1 point 16 months ago

Yes very true on the boot time

Javanode [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

hand me the name of that program (Win8 start menu) NOW!! lol

bgleonarda [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

First 30 days are free, after that you have to pay $5 for it.

Javanode [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

very nice! it's $5 which Microsoft should've included in the first place

vnaut 1 point 16 months ago

I'm curious on as to how you're able to run Crysis 3 on max settings. I have an identical build (3570k, Sapph 7950 3GB, and 8gb RAM), yet I can only run on high settings with MSAA 2x.

Anyway, great build! This combination is a monster in every other game I've encountered - Crysis 3 is just a whole different beast, and a little unfair to use as any sort of benchmark.

bgleonarda [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

What drivers are you using? I'm using the new 13.3 beta drivers

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst13-3WINBetaDriver.aspx

My 7950 is oced to 1120 core and 1600 memory.

And the monitor I used is only 1600x900 I believe.

Thank you!

rrohrer 1 point 15 months ago

Great build! I'm looking into getting this case... Does the side panel close? or are the GPU fans in the way? ...that would be a deal breaker.

bgleonarda [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 15 months ago

Thanks!

Yea, the side panel closes perfectly.

headhoncho [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

great rig! but... maybe use DVI instead of VGA. hehe :D

bgleonarda [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

I built this computer during spring break and left my main monitor in my dorm. I had to use a real old monitor for a couple of pictures which didn't have a dvi slot so I had to use the converter.

headhoncho [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

cool :)

SshadowX1 1 point 15 months ago

have you planned how you are gonna water cool with such small amount of space?

bgleonarda [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

When I figure out how to pay all these damn student fee, I'm going to buy a corsair h80i.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181031

And mount the rad where the exhaust fan is right now. First I want to buy an SSD though lol.

Peterisluego [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

What type of desk is that???

uin12nerfer 1 point 13 months ago

How did u get windows 8 for $15?!

tophero 1 point 12 months ago

he's a student so possibly through his school - you can get pretty heavy discounts on software that way.
