I have needed a new rig for game development and gaming for a while, and so decided to save up £4000 towards one that I could rely on for developing, gaming, and everything else I threw at it.
I use this rig for: 3DS Max, Unreal Development Kit, Photoshop, Mudbox mainly, sometimes all at the very same time, and it is yet to choke on anything. The name Cassie used to stand for something, but the meaning got lost, so now it's just there as a name!
A little about some specific parts:
PROCESSOR (3930K) I was originally going to go for the Ivy 3770k, however I decided the extra 2 cores in the 3930k would be quite useful in some applications. It is a monster of a processor (if a little on the expensive side). So far I have overclocked to 4.2GHz with no issue. I will be overclocking to 4.5GHz today hopefully.
MONITORS (DELL U2713HM) Deciding on monitors was a royal pain the backside. I wanted a pair of 2560 x 1440 monitors, but while there is a much narrower choice compared to 1080 monitors, there was never a clear winner for monitor comparisons, every monitor that I was looking at within budget had a flaw or niggle of some sort. In this case, the U2713hm is infamous for bad quality control issues, among others. Happily I can report back that these monitors have been perfect. The piocture is perfect, and I have none of the quality control issues (massive backlight bleeding, crosshatching, etc.).
GRAPHICS CARDS (DUAL GTX 780S) These are monsters! When I was originally choosing GPUs, I was being quite picky: it needed to have PhysX support (so Nvidia cards), it needed to perform well in games, and it needed as good a compute performance as possible. The card that immediately came to mind was the GTX Titan. I did not like this choice though as it is a very expensive card, and while it had good compute performance, it's gaming performance was lacking for the price. Fortunately the GTX 780 released, and it made my choice a lot easier, so I got 2 of these! It plays anything I throw at it at full settings 2560 x 1440.
MEMORY (32GB VENGEANCE) How much memory is too much? Decided the more the better, especially with the amount of applications I have open at once!
Overall I am exceptionally happy with this build. It may have been overkill if it were just for games, but for other programs like UDK, the extra power is exceptionally helpful. I highly recommend nearly all the parts in this build to anyone who is wanting to build a similar spec rig. The only downsides I have really come across is the Wireless card was very slow at first (I thought it was defect and got as far as filling in an RMA before it suddenly sped up again!); and the Blu Ray drive can be quite noisy.
