Budget plex server / web surfer

Well this is my first (official) build. I work IT for a living and constantly repair computers, but this is my first actual build from the ground up! My laptop finally died on me, so I figured I'd just build something since I've always had the itch. Outside of work I usually just use my PC for media, so my needs were modest.

-CPU - Went with the pentium since it had a lot of good reviews for the price range, so far its perfect for what I need, no hiccups even when accessing all 4 drives at once.

-MB - Cheap, supports haswell, and had the perfect number of sata ports.

-Ram - Got it for free from a scrapped PC, will probably buy legit ram in the future if I ever upgrade.

-HDD/SSD - had the SSD in my laptop and it works great, speeds are quick, boot time is blazing. no complaints. all the hard drives were externals, now I got to scrap the enclosures, toss the cables, and everything is already connected!

-Case - Reaaaaaally like the mITX cases, and this one had a lot of good reviews. Airflow so far is great, and has plenty of room for HDD's.

-PS - definately wanted something modular with the tiny case, more than enough power for what i've got, and can't go wrong with corsair!

-OS - Also free from student alliance with microsoft. (I also secretly really like w8!)

-keyboard - no batteries is wonderful.

**added a higher wattage PSU incase I add any upgrades, I was able to return the cx430m for the cx600m, and actually will save a few extra $$ after the rebate!

+1 , no harm done using a SSD which you had laying around!!

Retroman 2 points 7 months ago

nice, you fit a ton of drives in that tiny form factor case, pretty sweet +1

A serious +1 for not getting the i3. I've got the same processor for my server, and for a server it's pretty overkill, I might consider this CPU for other builds with seriously low requirements.

Riggings [1 Build] 2 points 7 months ago

Almost 5.5TB's for $232 plus cpu to boot! My wife would love this build and so do I!

From what I've heard the WD Green drives can be kind of dodgy. I would recommend watching them closely. Good build though, plus 1.

Any HDD can be dodgy. Some more than others, but I can say I've had mine in my server for the better part of a couple years basically 24/7. This was also before Red drives became a big thing... want to switch now >.<

That is extremely clean for that tiny of a case! +1 for getting all that stuff in such a small case! Nice build!

Dude samsung ram is good ram. Not sure how you're gonna go more legit.

Anyway, nice build!

Congratulations on your first official build and a very nice job.

For some reason this reminds me of my first build. I was in the IT field working mainframes at the time. My first processor was an 8088. Nice work and thanks for the memories.

That is alot of HD's in a little box. Nice build.

Nice. How is the performance of that CPU when transcoding on the fly? That is my dilema I am facing in making a decision on a CPU choice. I have a P4 that I am looking at replacing and looking at this processor but also the new lower end Haswell Refresh i3's due to my requirements. I am looking at my Plex box transcoding 2 streams at the same time.

Haven't run into any issues yet! I stream to a rasplex and my roomates xbox. The only issues so far have been more from our ATT router than the server itself!

Not sure the SSD is needed for this build's purposes, but everything else about it is fantastic for the price and need. Well done.

This is still my main home pc for web surfing and stuff, and its nice to have all my parts consolidated into 1 box :)

Eschaton [2 Builds] 1 point 7 months ago

Righto, thought it was just a plex box.

FreeFireXI [3 Builds] 1 point 7 months ago

Plex Box One is my favorite!

Well, it does ensure that he can boot faster, and leaves the HDDs for his Plex media.
