Description

Background

This was a build for my older brother. He has always been a PC gamer, but over 5 years ago his gaming laptop died and never had the money to get another. He recently got a job that pays well and asked me to build a great gaming computer for him that, and I quote, "Makes up for all the lost time since my laptop broke." He wanted a computer that could handle any game at max setting at 1920X1080 at 144hz. He is also interested in video editing and basic website development. His budget was about $2250.

NOTE: All parts were bought over a month ago so that is one reason I went with a 980 and not a 980 TI.

Issues:

This build was a nightmare... I have built only a couple computers before this one, but each build went flawlessly. So about a month and a half ago all the parts arrived, so I did an out of the box build to test the parts. Everything worked great and I launched into the BIOS so I built the computer and launched the BIOS again. WORKED GREAT! So naturally I started loading in Windows...but after 30 seconds the computer would shut down. I proceeded to remove every non-necessary part. It still would shut down. I then took parts from my own computer like the PSU and installed it into my brother's build. IT STILL SHUT DOWN.

So after running out of ideas I brought it to Best Buy they ran a test and determined the MoBo was bad. So we sent out the MoBo and got it replaced. After redoing the whole build it made it past the 30 second mark :D ! But then while Windows was installing it just shut down...There was no turning it back on. I would hit the start button on my MoBo and it would either not start or just stay on for a half a second.

I took every part out and reinstalled it but it didn't work. After a while I decided to swap the PSU from my build, "The Shell Shock", to my brother's build. IT WORKED! So one bad MoBo and one bad PSU later my brother now has the build he deserves.

Final Thoughts

Overall I am really happy with this build. I think my brother will love it and that makes the annoyance of bad parts worth it. Thank you for checking out the "White Wolf"! Please feel free to leave any sort of comments below.

Part Reviews

CPU

I love this CPU, and I can't wait to overclock it. I would have already done that if the build didn't get delayed.

CPU Cooler

This cooler is way better than the NZXT Kraken! I love how the cooler looks and the head doesn't stay lit when the PSU is on the Computer actually has to start up.

Motherboard

The Motherboard seems to be a great product, but the issues I had with the ASUS's customer service made me very upset. They refused to believe this was a faulty product until I showed testes that it was in fact the MoBo. It is a great MoBo, but I hope no one else has any trouble with it.

Memory

RAM...It works so 5 stars!!!

Storage

I love the 500 GB's I get. I used two 250 GB SSD's in the past in RAID 0, but the hassle seems too annoying. This is simple and awesome.

Storage

I am glad I went with the WD. It is great and the Black series works perfect for this build.

Video Card

I really like this graphics card, even though I would have loved to put the 980 TI in this beast.

Case

I can't believe how easy it is to build in this thing. I love the airflow and the look of it. My only complaint is that the Optical Drives block some on the cable grommets.

Power Supply

I love Cosair PSU's so I can't complain much about have a faulty one...It happens and their custom service helped me with no questions.

Optical Drive

This is actually the Blu-Ray drive from my "Shell Shock" build. I was not using it at all and my brother has a big Blu-Ray collection so I just sold it to him. He loves it already.

Wireless Network Adapter

My brother can not have ethernet where he lives, so we needed a WiFi card for him. It works great.

Case Fan

My brother wanted a really quiet machine and these are so quiet I can't even hear them.

Case Fan

My brother wanted a really quiet machine and these are so quiet I can't even hear them.

Fan Controller

I like how simple it is.

Monitor

My Brother wanted to have a high fps while gaming, so I recommended this monitor. It is such a good monitor and I would recommend it to anyone

Great build, but that comment about how the h105 cools better than the kraken seems like blind loyalty to me. The kraken x61 performs the same and sometimes better than the h110 GT, in most systems, and the ones that I've actually witnessed myself. Does your brother play witcher 3, or do you guys both like the series? Also do you play it on GOG Galaxy or on Steam? anyways you have my upvote!

Yes he loves witcher 3 on steam! And I should reword my comments about the coolers I just didn't like the software with the kraken even though it performs great.

Wow thats one cool rig literally!! Must be with all those solid fans. This computer will last a lonnng time and then he can put another 980 in and extend the life even more! +1 also for a fellow cuber!

Ps - what are your core temps under full load? Im intrigued by your radiator setup being up top rather than in front. Wondering if maybe I should set mine up like that too..

Thank you! Using Prime95 the highest temp is 60c but it averages at 28 to 30!
