Description

To the point: Tight budget build but it does the job

Build notes:

  • This case isn't the greatest to work in, especially in the corner with the fans. I ended up using some scotch all weather plastic velcro to put the SSD on the back of the 5.25 cage. The stick on fasteners don't leave any residue and keeps it in place just fine.

  • I ended up cutting a hole in the side panel because the cooler was a couple mm too tall. buuut i didn't want to wait for return shipping or anything and i thought it might be fun.

  • right now i'm running a mild overclock that i'll probably bump up a little more later on. Its a little tricky because a lot of the usual hardware monitors have a problem reading accurate temps on this cpu. Also, my office area is annoyingly hot at all times

  • the ram is alright. looks good. It ran at the right speed out of the box but I had to manually set the latency, not a big deal. In hindsight i probably should have gone with 1.5v but the price was right on this

  • The r7 260x is fine for now. So far I've only played Natural Selection 2 at 1680x1050 (hand me down monitor that will be upgraded eventually) on high settings getting between 50 and 60 fps.

  • I picked up the SSD on a newegg sale last year so at least I got to carry that over for this build

  • Motherboard is nice. Bios is easy to work with

  • OS: at the moment i'm using a 90 day evaluation copy of windows 8.1 enterprise.. I don't hate it but i'll probably go back to windows 7 once I actually buy an os.

Overall it's not going to win any beauty contests or inspire much jealousy but I had a lot of fun putting it together

Backstory: This is my second build. My first was quite a bit beefier, 2600k and a 6970 with 8gb of 1600, but I was in the military at the time and having to move around a lot I ended up selling it and picking up an Asus G72. The laptop served me well for some years but died last year.. Needed a laptop for school though so I picked up an ultrabook and proceeded to be annoyed for months staring at my unplayable steam library.. so yea I wanted to put something together that would at least get me back to being capable of playing some games and for work and school.

Nice build! I think that the hole in the side panel actually looks cool! +1

I second this

Agree, good grommet stuff or whatever around it. Pretty cool having the tops of the heatpipes poking out... very much like an automotive element.

Hm. I have the Source 210 and that cooler, and didn't haven't have that problem. Anyways, awesome build.

thanks. yea it's weird, I think maybe the motherboard's socket adds a tiny bit of height? i tried reinstalling the cooler and retightening all the mb stand offs but yea couldn't get it to sit without pushing on the panel.

That's what I was thinking. Anyways, I think it looks cool.

how do you like that cpu i'm thinking of upgrading to it.

So far it's good, tough to beat for the price. The only thing is that core temp and hwmonitor don't give correct temps for it. I'm still looking for a fix for that. For now i'm just using amd overdrive to monitor. its a bit weird because it gives temperature as how far it is from its max allowed temp. so at idle it will say 70ish and then go down as load increases.

I don't know how the stock cooler is but most reviews i read said it wasn't very good

thanks for the feedback still debating on it

The A10 6800k is on sale on amazon for 109 right now i probably would have went with that if that sale happened slightly earlier..

I have the A10 6800k and your gfx card, XFX R7 260x, runs all my games on high settings and smooth. With the right cooling you can go up to 4.6Ghz

Nice build at a really decent price!

One minor suggestion, if you mount the SSD out front (I did on my 210 build: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/NI5)) it really adds a bit to the look and shows off that expensive piece of hardware. Just a thought, take it or leave it :)

+1

indeed, I might move it out front once I add another drive

Well balanced budget build, what kind of frames are you getting in games?

I've only played a Natural selection 2 and a bit of the witcher 2 and umm FTL. NS2 on high i'm averaging around 50 on the with everything on high but reflections off. The witcher I only played a few minutes of to test and was getting low 40s on the high preset with textures set to large and bloom, vsync, and something else turned off. Important to not though i'm playing at 1680 x 1050 so bumping it up to 1080 I'm guessing would bring me down to the high 30s low 40s with the same settings. Sorry I don't have more info yet but I'll post some benchmarks eventually
