A student first build

Description

I wanted something that would play anything on highest settings. I didn't want to go AMD or Radeon for the simple reason that I am a intel/nvidia fanatic.

I will overclock the CPU so that's why I went for the 4670k (and because I didn't need hyper threading).

I choose A WD 1TB blue to save a couple bucks but I should have bought a WD 1tb black or a seagate 2tb.

The ram is awesome it runs fast and cool plus it was a steal a 69$.

I know my PSU is a little overkill but I wanted a PSU that would allow me to add another gtx770 later on.

A SSD is the next thing I will buy, but since I never used one, it is not something that I really need right now. So, I decided to save I couple bucks and wait for sales to get one.

I read I lot of reviews about GPU and for the gtx 770 the gigabyte was not the best but was always really good, in every aspect. Moreover, it runs supercool which is really important to me.

The case looks sick, it has a lot of space even for a mid-tower case. The only bad side is the rubber in the cable management holes are really cheap and not even glued in place, so I removed then.

I already had windows 7 pro so I didn't put it in the list.

Everything was bought on Newegg.ca and I had no problem : the shipping was fast and I had no DOA.

It runs and looks awesome.

hopes you'll like it!

Nice components. Nicely balanced. +1

Curious, what about the WD Blu do you not like? I have one (as well as seagate & others) and I've had no problems with it at all.

I works fine but for like 20$ I could have bought a black which is a little faster :P

LegoPC [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

I don't think it's any faster. They both spin at 7200 RPM and both have 64MB of cache. The only difference is the warranty.

I have owned both the Blue and the Black. Blue is a little slower, but I don't think the Black is worth the extra $20. The Blue actually has decent performance.

Sometimes better warranties mean better components-the company feels comfortable extending the warranty at that point. The quality of the components makes the Black drives faster, even though their power consumption is higher.

I went a looked up some benchmarks, seems you're correct. However, from the point of the user I doubt they'll notice any discernible differences in speed, at least I haven't. Of course this is just my opinion. But I will say if the reviews on black drives are any indicator of quality, then they're just as unreliable as Western Digital's other offerings.

This is a great build! Airflow looks great, the black-white-red theme is super good-looking, and i think its pretty well balanced - although you really need an SSD for boot times, noise, and overall speed, imo.

Also, I know you said you were waiting for an SSD on sale...just wanted to stress the pleasure of having one in a system like yours (as mine is similar in some regards)

Very clean, great choice in parts.

For a first build you can't ask for much more.

I got rid of my phantom because I lost faith in NZXT products, then I got the CM Storm Scout 2, take a look at that case ;]

jumojer [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

Thanks!

Well I almost did too I most say, I pre-order a a couple of Phantom 530 and it really complicated and costly to get then in canada.

the CM Storm Scout 2 looks great but I still prefer my phantom 410 :P

Nice build, mate. I'd be interested to see some benchmarks when you're done overclocking, as I always like to see how similar builds stack up. Personally, I went with an ASUS 770, but that's just because I've used ASUS a lot in the past for various other components (laptops, mainly), and I've always been satisfied, plus I heard they were great for overclocking.

Smexy build kudos on the case and mobo! +1

Anthozoa 1 point 12 months ago

I want to get the CPU, MOBO, CPU Cooler, Case and the CPU. Does anything bottleneck?

+1

thanks a lot! for now I need to overclock my ram to get the full 1866mhz but nothings seems to slow down the build despite the usual HDD write speed. Add an SSD and this is the best build u can get for the price. (in my opinion)

This is a fantastic build! :D Excellent photos too! :)

Nice build! I'm wondering how loud the system is with the stock fans and the H100i stock fans? Also, where did you put the Corsair 140? I don't see it. Thanks!

jumojer [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

the Radiator of the H100i is placed between the plastic top of the case and the actual metallic shell. The H100i fans have variable speed that I can set with a corsair software. On 'quiet' mode It is really quiet! (haha) but as soon as you want some performance, the stock fans are loud.

Nice build. How did the case work for you? I have the white one and it seems really nice but I just need the mobo, cpu cooler, and the extra hdd.

The thing that sort of worries me is the rubber grommets, I might remove them since they come off easily.

jumojer [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

Yes remove then they are annoying and useless but for the rest of the case it's awesome. The only other thing would be that the plastics easily catch dust and finger prints but thats not big deal for me.

stormclaw11 1 point 12 months ago

Not bad. Not bad...

jumojer [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

Great first build! You know a case is usually the lower end on price and would be a ton of fun to change (like another build). So if you don't like the case that gives you more fun. I assumed the ssd was responsible for my incredibly fast boot times with my new build but maybe its the motherboard. my system boots in like 10 seconds and that alone was worth so much to me. Great job and good luck to you.

The computer I'm building almost matches yours exactly! Weird hahaha. Glad I can see what mine will look like hopefully, yours looks great!
