Description

My very first build. I had bought a late 2014 27' IMac 5K Retina computer. After countless hours in front of it playing World of Warcraft, I realized I had a great display but, was lagging in large groups playing pvp. During WOD it was fine but, as soon a Legion launched I knew my IMac wasn't going to cut it. So, I started looking around on PCPartpicker dreaming of having a better rig to get me through those tuff PVP battles. I stared and stared for hours looking at all the completed builds on the website studying the different parts you guys were using and the similarities with the builds. About a month ago I sat down and , said the hell with it. I ordered the MOBO, ram, and a HDD. When it arrived at my door I was thinking I must be crazy. I know nothing about computers much less how to build one. I seriously thought of sending it all back. So. that said on Sept 29 I ordered the rest of the components. Except for the GPU. I was on a tight budget. Everything arrived on time on Oct. 5th and , I had enough to run to Best Buy and was going to buy a AMD card for $139.00. When I got to the store I listened to the salesman and bought the brand new EVGA Geforce GTX 1060 SSC 6gb GDDR5 for $299.00. I don't regret it. I went straight home and, started putting it all together and, h aven't looked back. I have to say I was as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs when I opened that MOBO box. I had to walk away from it a few times. But, it all came together. The worst mistake I made was ordering the CPU cooler before checking the compatibility. I didn't order the kraken x31. I ordered the kraken x41 because I wanted the pump that had lighting on it. Other than that lil' hiccup everything else went buttery smooth. It posted on the first boot and, I installed the OS and drivers using a flash drive. I must say I'm impressed. I finally found out what all the hype is about. I love my lil' rig and I hope to get a lot of use out of it. I used the Asus 5-way optimization tool and lightly overclocked the CPU to 4.6 ghtz. That was fine for me I stopped right there and saved the settings.

Part Reviews

CPU

Great Chip! All the reviews out there are 100% accurate. It's preformed just like I've heard and, seen. I was able to use the Asus 5-way optimization and, It overclocked stable at 4.6 ghtz. Because I'm a noob I backed it down to 4.2 for now. Idle temp is 22'c and the gpu temp is 31'c

CPU Cooler

Awesome CPU cooler! Keeps the CPU cool and the new pump looks great. Idle CPU temp 22'c - 25'c Load temps 44'c - 50'c Stable 4.6 ghtz overclock.

Motherboard

All the reviews I've read are true. Great entry level board for the price. No problems installing it into the NZXT s340 case. And, the bios is easy to use. Posted on the 1st try.

Memory

Trusted brand, great color, and, it works just like it says.

Video Card

Great entry level card for $299.00. Temps at idle 33'c between 60'c and 70'c when gaming on ultra settings..Nothing really to compare it to except my late 2014 27' iMac 5k retina with 3.5 GHz i5 and, 2GB AMD Radeon R9 M290X. The GTX 1060 performs much better. Graphics are crisp on 1920 x 1080 but, I'll be able to tell more when I get a monitor that preforms like the 5k retina display.

You have the wrong Kraken cooler in your parts list.

mc41 submitter 1 Build 0 points 1 month ago

Yeah, nzxt.com are out of the Kraken x62 but, I just ordered the Kraken x52 and, it should be here in a few days. I'll try to post some new pictures when it arrives.

What cooler do you have in there now? I noticed it had a blue backlight, but I didn't think the x31 did... Oh and +1 for almost invisible cables and a good build :)

Enrico411 1 point 3 months ago

x31 is the same as the x61 except that it has a smaller rad ofcourse.

ThinkWithPortals 2 Builds 1 point 3 months ago

The X31 has an RGB LED, so OP must have just set it to blue.

ballisticism 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

The X31 doesn't, but the x41 does, and that is what the OP has crammed into their case

EDIT: An extract from a TweakTown review of the x31

The one thing we will really miss in this version is that on the head units, what was once a backlit design and name, is now painted, and illumination is not included here

originally, I had planned on buying the Kraken x31. When I went to Amazon to order I noticed it didn't have LED lighting. So, without checking the compatibility on PCpartpicker I ordered the x41 thinking it would work in the S340 cause it's a NZXT case. On amazon they have the X31,X41,X61 reviews all jumbled together it's confusing. The day after I ordered the X41 I read on the NZXT website that it wouldn't fit in the S340 case. The X41 fit's snug in the case but, the radiator is to tall to fit another 140mm fan above it in the front of the case. But, right now my CPU temp is 24'c and the GPU is 34'c pump rpm is 1680 and the fan is spinning at 420 rpm's.

Monitor 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

Nice build. I would just suggest adding photos of different angles and possibly the rest of your setup. Other than that, good job with the cable management and assembly.

mc41 submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

Yeah, your right. I have some work to do with my set up. Time to move some furniture around. And, I need to order me a new monitor. My IMac takes up most of my desk space and I'm having to use a Samsung flat screen TV as a monitor for now.

Nice overclock and nice build!

Thanks

It appears your ram is a blue version of the Corsair Vengeance, not the black your parts list would suggest. Not sure if blue is on pcpartpickers site, but still.

But nice build, looks very nice.

mc41 submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

Yeah, when I was making the list originally I had picked the black, if you notice I ordered all the parts from amazon and when I went to amazon to order I found the blue ram and I snatched it up cause I thought it would look better as far as aesthetics go. I'll change it. Thanks

LastRaven17 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

I have the same case and I recall trying to find blue RAM, I just ended up painting the accent pieces on my Trident Z's.

Wish some parts like RAM came with more color options.

Nice build.

what made you choose that 1060 over all the other ones out there. Im in the market for one

mc41 submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

For $299.00 I think it's a great entry level graphics card. Also, as a first time builder all I have to compare it to is my iMac 27" 5k with a AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics card. I looks as good as or better than the iMac using a TV as a monitor for now. Also, there's not a lot of info out there on the EVGA Geforce GTX 1060 SSC.

Arkwoman1990 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

How you like that monitor?

mc41 submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Excellent monitor. A bit overpriced for a TN panel. Great for gaming the response time is awesome and refresh rate is good to. I would recommend a IPS monitor for photoshop and video editing. It took some time to get used to the 24' screen after using a 27' 5k retina Imac. The 24' screen is just the right size for viewing most projects after you use it for a while.

Does the newer kraken you have block the ram slot nearest to the cpu? Would 4 sticks of ram fit?

mc41 submitter 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

yes, 4 sticks of ram will fit.
