Description

They say that good things come in small packages. Well this is my small package and, by golly, it is good! That came out wrong...

Anyways, this computer is my new baby. I decided to forgo the LEDs and big windows, and stick to a design that is much cleaner, and a bit more mature in my opinion. That said, just because I can't see inside my case, doesn't mean that there's stray cables every which way. I tried my best to manage the cables, but it's still not quite right to me. I'll deal with that later though.

Haven't benched anything yet, but I can play BF4 at 1440p on High/Ultra settings with 2xMSAA, so that's alright, I guess. I included my WEI score, for those who care about that sort of thing. :p

All the prices are filled in according to what I paid, not including shipping/taxes/etc. The SSD and SSHD were gifts from my mother and step-father respectively. As for the Sleeved Cable Kit, I saw it on Craigslist for $30, so I jumped on that. (Same guy had a Steelseries 6G|V2 for $40, so I picked that up for my other computer as well.)

Future upgrades include a possible R9 290 in the next couple of months (if the prices come down), and then watercooling everything.

So leave a comment. Tell me what you think, what you would've done differently, and so forth. Seriously, lay it on me.

P.S. I know the pictures aren't great, but my phone is next on the To-Upgrade list.

+1 for that ghetto mounted SSD

As for recommendations, a beefier gpu would help with 1440p gaming.

edit: I see you're already planning to upgrade

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 4 points 10 months ago

Thanks. :p

Which video card would you recommend at the $350 price-point?

EDIT: I see your edit.

Zeus [1 Build] 2 points 10 months ago

for an extra 49 dollars, the 290 is unbeatable at that price. The non reference coolers might cost a little more, however.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

If I buy a 290, I wanna go with watercooling right away, as my case doesn't have nearly enough airflow to house a 290 with an air cooler. But all of that costs money, and money is something I don't have anymore. :(

Zeus [1 Build] 6 points 10 months ago

Good point, the 290 with a reference cooler in that case would probably explode.

You can always sell a few organs to get some more money. PC upgrades are a #1 priority.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Since I don't drink a lot, I could probably sell some of my liver and a kidney.. :p

Zeus [1 Build] 6 points 10 months ago

Good quality kidneys are a rarity nowadays

rakenrol14 4 points 10 months ago

remember to leave one for yourself :)

Zeus [1 Build] 6 points 10 months ago

pfft, kidneys are overrated

rakenrol14 4 points 10 months ago

sell part of your liver. it grows back.

Starlana [2 Builds] 4 points 10 months ago

That's true. I'm a nursing student, remember... :)

(but I can't in good conscience recommend an invasive, unnecessary procedure like that for a video card)

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 4 points 10 months ago

I'm seriously considering it...

SgtTherin [1 Build] 1 point 10 months ago

You can't market organs for monetary gain in the united states and most other countries. Without stating the law and going on a serious rant. I just wanted to burst a bubble hehe

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

You mean I can't do it legally, but I can still do it.

SgtTherin [1 Build] 1 point 10 months ago

Lol that's how people end up missing important things laying in a tub full of ice. Lol nice build though hehe

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

Sounds like an alright way to go out. And thanks. :)

SethMatrix 2 points 10 months ago

Just wait for the new fancy coolers

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Once the aftermarket coolers are out, hopefully the reference design will drop in price so I can pick one up.

SethMatrix 0 points 10 months ago

Personally i prefer blower style. As long as your case has decent intake (you have a 290x you should have a decent case) it should be fine. The "noise the fan makes is a load of bullcrap. Of course the fan will be loud with a db meter against it with the side panel off! Il have to watch some youtube videos of how it really is to see it for myself.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

I think you may have misunderstood me. When I buy a 290, I'm going to WC right away. I don't have good enough airflow in my case to keep the temps at a reasonable level.

SethMatrix 0 points 10 months ago

So you are gonna spend the extra money on watercooling when you could just wait for non-reference designs?

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

It's not extra money since I want to WC anyways. I don't want to spend the extra money on a non-reference cooler, when I'm just going to slap a water block on it.

olympuse410 2 points 10 months ago

I'm a little late to the party, but this guy watercooled a 780 and 4770k in the TJ08-E:

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Yup. That's pretty much what I want to do. :p

cjeffcoatjr [3 Builds] 0 points 9 months ago

You could put an NZXT G10 and a Kraken on it

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 9 months ago

I could, or I could watercool everything.

bchurch 1 point 5 months ago

lol

kingspiral 3 points 10 months ago

Oh my god, that's one hell of a front case fan!

Nice build, and +1 to the 290/290x in the future.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

Thanks. :)

canders [6 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Looks nice. Love the case. Isn't there a spot for the ssd on the bottom of the case?

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

Thanks! There is a spot on the bottom, but it's being used by my other 2.5" drive.

canders [6 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

Ah. All I saw was the 3.5 and didn't see you had 2 of the 2.5s in your part list. Thanks.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

No problem. :)

Gooberdad [2 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Sweet build. It looks like a lot of power in a tiny package. +1

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Thanks! That was the idea. I'm tired of swapping out graphics cards every time a new one comes out, so I just want to stick a 290/290X in there, watercool everything, and then not buy anything new for at least 3 years. :p

blaziecat1103 1 point 10 months ago

That 280X of yours is plenty powerful. With your current monitor setup, there's no reason to upgrade for a while. If you were going to do anything, I would get a 79xx card from someone upgrading, and then put it in CF with your 280X. It doesn't sound like it'll work, but it will. Others have done it.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

I have no interest in Crossfiring but thanks for the tip. :)

Gooberdad [2 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

I think you have succeeded.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 10 months ago

Starlana [2 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Baby, I'll add a +1 to your small package. :)

As Zeus said, moi j'adore the ghetto mounted SSD. :D

<3 Starlana <3

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Thanks! :D

As for the SSD, it's kind of the only place it would fit that was out of the way, while still staying cool. :p

1hitandugo [2 Builds] 2 points 9 months ago

how's the 280x treating ya? i heard it has lots of artifacting problems, and also i ordered one before knowing about it.. now im worried if mine artifacts.. and i don't know how to fix it and don't really want to RMA my card..

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 9 months ago

Mine just started artifacting at stock clocks a few days ago. I looked on forums for a fix and saw that some people fixed it by upping the voltage by 20mV. I did that and then the artifacting got worse.

It is currently sitting in a box until I can ship it to Asus. When I get the replacement, I'll probably sell it and go for a 290.

So yeah, hopefully yours works just fine. :/

smittypantz@hotmail.com [9 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

So cool, great job. What do you think of that ram? 7 completed builds on here... You have what professional call an addiction. Great work on all your builds. I wish I could have sparked a conversation like the one you have here on my build! :-) +1

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks!

The RAM is awesome. Super solid at 2400Mhz, and I've never had any problems with it.

And as for the 7 completed builds, some of them don't exist anymore, so yeah. I do build a lot of computers though, and I just like to document them all. :p

TheAwakenedOne [1 Build] 2 points 3 months ago

+1 For the matching Red Maximus Mobo and G.skill RAM!

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 3 months ago

Thanks. The RAM was carried over from a previous AMD rig, in which I used the Crosshair V Formula-Z (also red).

I'm actually tempted to sell off just about everything and do a Black/Silver theme. :)

TheAwakenedOne [1 Build] 2 points 3 months ago

Cool I personally like the carbon black/Blue build I did. So I think silver would be nice.

BenPSkinner 2 points 2 months ago

Dat balanced out build! +1

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 2 months ago

Thanks. :)

I actually just sold the motherboard, RAM, CPU cooler, and video card though.

BenPSkinner 1 point 2 months ago

Did you replace the sold parts with anything else?

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 2 months ago

So far, just the RAM. I bought a 2x4GB kit of Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866Mhz. I plan on buying a second identical kit eventually. I was also going to pick up an Asus Z97 Gryphon, but there weren't any in stock in my city.

And that's all I'm going to say, because the rest is a surprise. :p

BenPSkinner 1 point 2 months ago

Well dang, that's already pretty beast :O

Jake19 1 point 8 months ago

What do you think of the keyboard so far? I have seen bad reviews on newegg.

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

I love it. It's a solid, no frills, does-what-it's-supposed-to-do keyboard.

I will be upgrading this year once the Corsair RGB K70 is released though. I can't say no to style like that.

Jake19 1 point 8 months ago

Wow that is a nice keyboard!

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Indeed it is.

R9 -2 points 8 months ago

Remove 8 gigs u only need 8 of ram. Keep 12 maxxxxx

xBlood_Monkey [Submitter] [8 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

Ok, I'll break one of my RAM modules in half and then I'll have 12GB. :)

smittypantz@hotmail.com [9 Builds] -2 points 5 months ago

Lol, no just through it in the trash!!
