Updated Bank For Your Buck PC

Description

This is an update of my first build. http://pcpartpicker.com/b/FhK

you can reference the old build for most of my build reasoning.

I decided to get a new PSU and a new case because quite frankly, i made some rookie mistakes.

First the PSU i upgraded because i wanted to up the voltages on my CPU in an attempt to push my overclock even farther. 4.0GHz was the highest i could go stable without upping my voltages. I figure getting a new higher quality PSU cant hurt for the future when i upgrade the GPU next. And the cherry on top of this all is that i got a crazy deal for it. The PSU was on sale for 50 after mail in rebate, 70 before rebate. I used a 10% off code to take another 7 bucks off because the price was before rebate. Totaling 43 dollars for a Corsair TX650.

The case upgrade is self explanatory, my old case has ZERO cable management possibility, no room behind the mobo, no places to attach zip ties and overall a very cramped space. Also the airflow in the case had a bad setup, having no fans on the top and being blocked by all my loose cables. My temperatures were suffering including my GPU getting up to 58C under load. The new NZXT Source 210 is night and day to the old fractal case. Up to 6 Fan slot of which i filled 4 so far, salvaging all the fans from the old case. The room behind the mobo cleaned up my cables a lot, i know there not perfect but im not a good organizer and they cables arent in the way of airflow. I got a really good deal on the case as well by getting it refurbished from newegg. only 26 bucks when it is usually around 40. Deal is still live on newegg if anyone else is looking for a real good budget case. The NZXT Source is the definition of bang for your buck.

The harddrive deal was from tigerdirect a couple days ago. 30 dollar rebate on a 70 dollar drive, these things never go under 50 bucks, so i had to snatch it up. The HDD from the old build is going to a computer i am building for my grandma.

NOTE: the 7870 was bought right before the 7950 price drops, i regret it everyday, pls dont rub it in lol.

Alot of people space out buying their builds to take advantages of sales and good deals, i took that advice to heart.

What kind is it?

xx116xx [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

I'm doing something like this, with a 7850 though. I don't have that type of money :P

CbassFishin 1 point 8 months ago

Is the motherboard good for the price? I might get one for a mATX lan party computer.

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

So far no problems with it, we'll see how far i can overclock this because i think the mobo may be the next limiting factor.

jock192 1 point 8 months ago

If you want a little more functionality on the motherboard such as Sata3 or USB3 headers. I would suggest MSI 760GMA-P34(FX), I just used it my build with an 8320.

ArcadeJack 1 point 8 months ago

Well done on the build! Will you be playing any games on this?

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

yeah i have played plenty of games in my old case. The main game i play is League of legends prett, y serious into ranked play. ive also played COD Blackops 2, crysis, blands 2, all play on max settings and get 50+ frames.

ArcadeJack 1 point 8 months ago

Wow. You can't really distinguish between 50 and 60 FPS can you? Have you played BF4 or DayZ on this beast?

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

no not yet, missed the open beta to test it out, but i wouldnt expect 60 frames from this build in BF4 prolly gonna be more like 60 on high with lower anti-aliasing

LukusAreulius 1 point 8 months ago

How's the FX-6300? I am thinking of maybe using one in a build.

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

if i were you i would go with the 8320, its 30 bucks more but if u overclock it it is the same as the 8350, which is 200.

theonelonewolf [1 Build] 0 points 8 months ago

It depends on your luck though too.

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 8 months ago

thats true, they say almost all 8320's can OC to 8350 speeds, getting above that is luck.

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

The 6300 is ok, i am actually trying to overclock it bc i need more power... i keep a lot of background programs open (steam, skype, spotify, league of legends client, and lots of chrome tabs) when i play Black ops 2 the cpu usage tends to be up in the 80's so that why i wanna push the OC higher. But i am asking alot out of it.

LukusAreulius 1 point 8 months ago

I think that I will actually go for the 4670k instead. By the way, good build!

YourLocalPCNoob [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

Dont feel bad you got a super sweet deal on that 7870. ASUS 7850s would go around for that price. Also why the poor rating for the fan/cpu cooler? are they both really loud or something

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

fan is a little lackluster in terms of build quality, and the CPU cooler AM3+ bracket broke the first time i tried to put it on, had to get a replacement bracket.

Rolphy [2 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

Could of gone with a smaller PSU, but it honestly doesn't really mean much, great build +1

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

i wanted 650 for upgrades in the future and so i can up the CPU voltages for overclocking. the 500W i had before wasn't gonna cut it, and the deal on the TX650 made it cheaper than anything smaller than that.

troller_awesomeness 1 point 8 months ago

How's the Source 210?

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

it great, i talked about it in the description a little bit.

bigblock454 1 point 8 months ago

it is okay the 7950 is back up to $270+ i should have gotten one when they were $170!!! so mad

PCModder 1 point 8 months ago

That case needs to be dusted out!!! :(

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

I think you looking at my old build before it was gutted lol, the new one is dust free.

PCModder 1 point 8 months ago

Probably haha.

NelsonDaine 1 point 8 months ago

How well does this build hold up with gaming?

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

very well, can get roughly 60 frames in any modern game on high, on ultra it varies for the game. black ops 2 gets 60 frames and crysis 2 gets ~50.

urvianoob 1 point 8 months ago

still wondering where you get 7870ghz for 160 and case for 26 and psu for 43 and hard drive for 40 and cooler for 10

cuz in canada, this would be 750$ atleast if i could actually get this for 500$, this is good amazing build

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

the 7870 was a newegg email promo deal, had a 20 dollar rebate. case was refurbished, the PSU was another newegg email deal that i combined with a promo code for 10% off, and the HDD was from tiger direct and came with a 30 dollar rebate, that one was the craziest deal. i dunno if canada's newegg site hass the same deals but see if oyu can find this one.

its $260... lol

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 8 months ago

ouch, im sorry man lol.

ivan134 1 point 6 months ago

How did you get around the fact that the mobo has only one chasis fan connector? I'm hoping to use this in a fractal arc mini r2. First time builder.

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

I used almost all molex fans as well as some homemade wiring lol, kinda sketchy.

timwcam 1 point 4 months ago

I was wondering about this too. I have an older power supply antec earth 500w, and i wanted to update my older sonata III the usb 2.0 version. Seems like its more trouble, and should've just bought a new case and power supply! but i already have a fractal design r4 and wanted a smaller something..researched cases for days, besides the point, wasn't that impressed with the whole lot. mini itx- matx- full atx.

I am kind of disappointed in this mobo, but like you said not many options going the AM3 route and i have a full atx asus in my r4. The fans, i didn't think would be a problem, coming from a guy who never upgraded any fan or cpu cooler (until recently).

First, no ethernet driver on fresh windows installation - just annoying using the slow usb wireless until i can find the driver.

Not sure about the usb 3.0 power supply connection? i saw this on my full atx asus mobo - with a usb 3.0 power and my seasonic 750w had that power connection? im guessing my old antec 500w crap was too old...so no usb 3.0? buy an adapter? new power supply? i was thinking about upgrading it anyway, and then why not a new case? the stoc antec case fan is "controlled" and molex connection..very nice! these new fans are the 3 pin whatevers (noctua)...1 cpu fan connection... on mobo. i used the provided y splitter...and i get the beep error cpu on bootup..but it still lets me through...not sure i should be continuing, maybe the voltage is split? would've been nice if they included a molex adapter..i see they are like $5 on amazon or newegg...but...buy a new psu? return mobo to microcenter? go full atx with more options? New case? or just one $5 adapter and call it a day? as you can see im quite perplexed and kind of a noob, but know enough and can read and figure things out! :)

I'd be happy for any suggestions.

THanks

ksabar100 [1 Build] 1 point 16 days ago

Any problems with overclocking on that mobo?

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 16 days ago

yeah dont do it. Its not made for it at all. the VRM temps can get very high because there is no heatsink. If you do insist on it i would advise not upping the voltage at all.

ksabar100 [1 Build] 1 point 15 days ago

So you're 4.4ghz overclock didn't stay stable?

deathfromup [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 15 days ago

yeah i turned it off.

ksabar100 [1 Build] 1 point 14 days ago

So you're not overclocked at all? Because i'm at 4.1 right now and everything semms fine
