Description

home server / gaming pc / work vm server

friend asked about mismatched hdd's heres explination

hdds are mixes due to different needs, old pc had cav black for os (fast drive, then barracuda for fast mass data store, then a green for basic store (greens were given to brothers pc)) so im using 2x mix matched 3.5"'s + the 2 new 3.5" barracuda 3tb's , then as i have a hot swap bay at the top (for ssd's ect, my old external drives whos caddys broke are now internal hot swap drives (hence deckstar / blue scorp) the space the 2.5"'s take up (1x 5.25" bay) gives me better space / cable management and lets me mod the case further by removing bays / caddys that are not needed opening up better air flow,

when overkill is barely enough...

if you can have one workstation take the place of several running as VMs, overkill is never enough lol.

Personally I have been there, using a "there can be only one" workstation as your central everything can get painful, something as simple as a OS update / reboot you need to take the whole shebang offline. For me, freenas can simplify your storage needs and ESXi for all your VMs are preferred. But I still fire up vbox once in a while just to test out the latest linux distro, why not :P

I wonder why people keep saying "overkill" on the storage. I would argue that "overkill applied to elements that aren't benefited by more. Like RAM that won't be used, or a CPU far beyond the needs of the user.

What people seem to be saying is that "you closet is too big". Seriously?

How do you know how much he has to store? I have 4Tb on my system and it is 80% full. I know people who store videos/video clips and have 12Tb of storage and they are full.

So it seems rather ridiculous to make that comment.

Data that you usually dont use can be stored on a NAS or a external HDD!

Norm101 [2 Builds] 2 points 17 months ago

That is an assumption that it isn't used.

I've heard mixed reviews of those speakers. How do they sound?

Well, thats 8.8 TB, who needs that much. My new build (built it yesterday)only has an 180GB SSD and an 2TB caviar black!

Hakumisoso [2 Builds] 1 point 17 months ago

Mine only has a 256gb ssd. but a 2tb cloud. The cloud is very slow though so i only use it for movies/ music/ pictures/ backups.

I'm thinking of getting the 2450HM monitor. How good is it for gaming?

nukem2000 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

its good for response time, as its not ips and brightness is great, the inbuilt "dynamics" mode sets up more contrast which is usefull for atmosphere.

however i have noticed that the colors (if doing photoshop work) the gradients arnt the best and can sorta merge into one color if they are verry close colors, (could be my colorblindness howerver)

brightshade782 1 point 15 months ago

That's great, I wanted something with good response AND good blacks. The colours will be fine I'm sure. Thanks for responding =]
