Description

I built this PC for my son for his 11th birthday, I started to look into buying parts around June 2013 finished around Sept 2013. His birthday was in October, he was so excited. I plan on buying a second 760 and giving it to him next October. I also overclocked the 4670k to 4.6 real easy at OK temps 100%load @ 71c with the 212, but it runs at stock for now and the same for the 760.

CPU = GOOD PERFORMER

CPU COOLER = 212 IS A GREAT COOLER FOR THE PRICE AND I DID NOT WANT TO GET A WATER COOLER AND WORRY ABOUT LEAKS

THERMAL COMPOUND = WELL IT'S COMPOUND

MOTHERBOARD = IT'S A GREAT BOARD FOR THE PRICE AND IT GIVES ME A LOT OF OPTIONS FOR THE FUTURE , PLUS IT'S RED

MEMORY = IT'S MEMORY WOO, PLUS IT'S RED

STORAGE = SSD FOR WINDOWS AND SOME GAMES, HD I GOT A DEAL ON A BUNDLE, IT WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE HE NEEDS MORE THAN 500GB, PLUS I HAVE A HOME SERVER FOR MORE STORAGE

VIDEO CARD = 760 WAS BOUGHT SO I CAN SLI LATER AND IT RUNS GREAT BY ITSELF, PLUS IT MATCHES THE MOTHERBOARD

WIRELESS CARD = IT'S NOT BAD , HE GETS GOOD SIGNAL IN HIS ROOM

CASE = LOVE THE CASE, LOTS OF ROOM, AND QUIET

CASE FANS = OK I KNOW I COULD HAVE GOTTEN BETTER FANS OR LESS FANS BUT , I LIKE THE LOOK OF THE FAN & THEY ARE SO QUIET, SO THERE ARE 6 FANS IN TOTAL 2 IN THE FRONT INTAKE, 2 IN THE TOP EXHAUST, 1 IN THE BOTTOM INTAKE,1 IN THE BACK EXHAUST. I WANTED TO HAVE AS MUCH AIR FLOW AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE AS HIM BEING 11 HE HAS LEFT IT ON ALL DAY WHILE HE IS AT SCHOOL AND NOW I AM THANKFUL FOR MY FORESIGHT.

POWER SUPPLY = CORSAIR, GOLD PLUS A SEVEN YEAR WARRANTY

OPTICAL DRIVE = IT JUST MADE THINGS EASIER.

OS = I HATE WINDOWS 8

MONITOR = 1080P 2ms, IT LOOKS GREAT

KEYBOARD = LOGITECH KEY/MOUSE COMBO WAS FOR STARTERS, AND FOR CHRISTMAS HE WILL BE GETTING THE CORSAIR K70 LED BACK LIT AND HE LOVES THE SOUND.GOOD SOLID BUILD QUALITY

MOUSE = LOGITECH KEY/MOUSE COMBO WAS FOR STARTERS, AND FOR CHRISTMAS HE WILL BE GETTING THE CORSAIR GOOD SOLID BUILD QUALITY

SPEAKER = THEY SOUND GREAT LOTS OF BASS AT LOW LEVEL, PLUS I DONT WANT TO HERE MINECRAFT SOUNDS IN MY LIVING ROOM

HEADPHONE = ASUS SOUND GREAT , PLUS ALL THE REVIEWS SAID THEY FIT A SMALL HEAD WELL.

CUSTOM = LED SLEEVED KIT WAS EASY TO INSTALL, LIGHTS UP NICE = STRIPS , AFTER I BUILT IT, I THOUGH IT WOULD LOOK COOK IF LIGHTS WERE COMING OUT OF THE VENTS = I WANTED THE POWER LIGHT TO BE RED TO MATCH = EXTRA 212 FAN TO PUSH/PULL FOR A LITTLE EXTRA COOLING

PS. I WILL POST MY TEMPS, BENCHMARKS AND MORE PHOTOS, LATER

Luckiest 11 year old I've ever seen... Awesome build!

ryguylax528 1 Build 32 points 20 months ago

This kid probably will never know what lag is

LeMonarque 3 Builds 6 points 20 months ago

Or maybe this will inspire him to learn exactly what lag is! I know for sure I would have gotten started sooner if I had this kind of an 11th birthday present lol

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 19 points 20 months ago

he indeed knows what lag is LOL!, his first PC was a $300 laptop that ran minecraft @ 4-10 fps

TwistyTreats 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 5 points 20 months ago

no, he has no idea he still plays games like ace of spades and minecraft

candy 2 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Just wondering, but if he's only going to be playing games like that, why didn't you go for an APU? Do you want it to be future proof for when he gets older?

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

I was trying to future proof it a little, that's why i am going to sli later. But before i built it he was playing games on a ps3 with his brother. Games like call of duty, battlefield ,Lego, skyrim, ect .but know its minecraft and ace of spades and gary's mod

zlogs 1 Build 5 points 20 months ago

Garry's mod is a bit mature for an 11 year old, no?

toomuchp4 1 point 20 months ago

I wouldn't say so; unless you install GibMod, that is.

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

he has been playing prop hunt and he makes his own maps and plays with bots, plus i have muted all chat

Fr33Th1nk3r 3 Builds 1 point 7 months ago

Camboy05 5 points 20 months ago

I'm 11 and I was just about to make a $300 budget build. When I saw this I nearly started crying. Good job though. You have one lucky son. :)

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 4 points 20 months ago

good luck on your build !!

Camboy05 3 points 20 months ago

Thanks!

endershack 2 points 7 months ago

I'm 12 and all i got for my 12th birthday was soccer shoes, and an ipod case. D':

ZeAtomicBomb 1 point 2 months ago

I'll be honest, I'm saving up for a £650 build hopefully for the end of the year. Should be future proof for a while. CPU:FX 8320E MOBO:AMD 970 Gaming RAM: g.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB cooler: TX3 EVO Hd: 1TB Seagate HDD GPU: GTX 750TI FTW 2GB PSU: Corsair CX430M

Costs about £550 without my speakers and headset. Don't need a OS and Monitor as I have Vista from my old build.

ItzMystery 5 points 17 months ago

wow... I'm amazed by this. Expensive son. What is his 16 birthday going to be? 3 Titans?

stinkytom7 4 points 20 months ago

11 year old has better computer than me wow is he lucky. Dad of the year lol.

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 0 points 20 months ago

thanks!

BiGUNMAN 1 Build 2 points 20 months ago

I can't really say this is the best 1.8K build... you can get an i7 with a 760 for 1.2K easily... and then you got 500$ for peripherals so :/ oh and win8 is exactly the same as win7 if you install Shell or any of the other solutions and you get the faster booting times so... Just a suggest/idea..

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 0 points 20 months ago

my boot time is 11 sec with out fast boot on(from power button to using windows)with fast boot its 6sec

Kragore 1 Build 2 points 20 months ago

Great build! Great info! 1up! Oh to be to be 11 with a pc like that!

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 0 points 20 months ago

FlusherBox 2 points 18 months ago

I wish you were my dad

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Thanks :)

alexmcm99 2 points 16 months ago

what 11 year old needs this computer?

Starlana 2 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Awesome build, but overkill for an 11 year old. Still, I'd be crazy to not give you the +1 just for over-spoiling your child. The build is awesome.

FokMaster 2 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

What I got for my 11th birthday... :( Luckiest kid in the world.

YourLocalPCNoob 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Dang you're kid mustve done something spectacular to get this. Is the bottom mounted fan beneath the PSU?

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

no the fan is beside the psu, the new photos show it. Plus he is a great kid.

Vas65mar 1 point 20 months ago

A $2000 gift? Wtf

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 6 points 20 months ago

the PC was a combined effort from me and my wife, and grand parents, when we gave him a party there was only one gift box and in that box was 10 more boxes all were wrapped and all were empty, it took him forever to open them and when he was done we told him to meet us in his bedroom, he was so happy he cried!!

Mediciu5 2 Builds 2 points 20 months ago

It's a good build for the purpose. But I really dig the gift wrap idea. I can see my own boys reacting like that in a similar situation. Good job (+1).

A couple of side notes/questions.

1) In the first couple of pics, there are the expected hardware items. But what are those strange flat paper things with writing on them?

2) If your son is getting into FPS games, my boys have recently started playing Planetside2. It's a decent introduction to FPS, sans gore. You just need to worry about the text chats. Just a thought from one dad to another.

3) Having spent time in the kitchen myself...aside from just raiding the fridge for a snack...I'd also give you a +1 for the kitchenaid stand mixer. If it's the wife's look into the glass bowl and spatula attachment. Big hits for stocking stuffers two years ago.

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 0 points 20 months ago

when i read this post i laugh so hard, after looking back at the photos and noticing the instructions!! thanks about the chat warning, and i will look into that bowl attachment

LeMonarque 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Best gift presentation ever!

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Thanks on the house ,me and my wife work hard for what we have and we love it.before this build he got a cheap $300 laptop when he was 8 it would run learning game off of disc, but that was it,it did not even play Minecraft .

mlembo43 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

i wish i was your son...how many fps does he get? what does he play?

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

he plays minecraft, ace of spades, garry mod, team fortes 2, some battlefield 3, way above 60fps

LeMonarque 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

WOW, that is one heck of an 11th birthday present! Dang!

veNNev 1 point 20 months ago

LOL is your son playing counter strike?

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 0 points 20 months ago

ya he sure is !he not bad.

ThatsPoorlyDrawn 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

But this is an AWESOME build, i love the air flow, great ideas, wanna see more!

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

the air flow in the case is crazy, the case comes with a fan switch 5v-7v-12v all the fans run thought it, it is set on 5v right now (the lowest setting)and when i did 3dmark11 the temps in the case were low

ThatsPoorlyDrawn 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Jeeze! This build could be left on for weeks and it would be fine!

Civ 1 point 20 months ago

How difficult was it to fit in a 140mm fan at the bottom intake with the HX750? I believe you can install a PSU with a maximum length of 170mm while still being able to install a 140mm fan but the HX750 is 180mm in length.

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

to fit the 140mm fan in that spot you have to install the psu temporary set the fan in place and remove the lower drive case.mark the holes from the fan and drill two new ones, then the drive bay fits in nicely , plus the fractal fans were the same size as the inside of the dirve case, i will post a new photo.

Civ 1 point 20 months ago

Ah I see. I won't have the issue with the drive bay since I plan on installing my SSD at the back of the motherboard tray but I don't know how comfortable I feel drilling new holes. I may just go with a 120mm for the bottom fan.

MartyMoo 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

What's he gonna do with GTX 760 and 8gb of ram? Play minecraft until he drops?- OH MY LORD HE PLAYS COUNTER STRIKE!!! That just nominated you for "Parent of the Century" award! Damn, most little kids think they're cool building things out of blocks and earning camos, he'll be shooting peope through walls.

dbrowerpower 1 point 20 months ago

I wish you were my dad. lol jk

dim23 1 point 19 months ago

Wasn't the led on the power button on the R4 blue? How did you change it to red? Good job with the build!! +1

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

yes, the power led was blue, all you have to do is remove the front panel and pull out the blue led and replace it with another of your choice.you will need to solder the new one,i all so installed two strip led to the front of the case so when i putted back the front cover the light would shine though the holes on the side

FlusherBox 1 point 18 months ago

Can you adopt me?

AXylophoneEatingLemon 1 point 18 months ago

MOTHERBOARD : jada jada jada, plus its red. everybody knows if its red its faster!

NeonMane 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Just a bit of mythbusting here, feel free to delete this comment; Closed loop water coolers like the Seidon 240 and H100i are designed to NEVER leak so long as you don't bend the tubing to heck. Other than that, you are one boss dad!

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

Thanks for the comment!

Dorksouza 1 point 15 months ago

How did you get the power led on the case to be red? because my r4's is blue and i love red

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

if you pull the frt bezel off, you can unscrew the power button and slide out the led ,you than can cut it off and re-solder a new one in its place, its a standard 3mm led, any question just asks

Thanks

SanjayP 1 point 15 months ago

Nice build I'm sure your son is really happy! I'm going to use that Asus PCE-N15 wireless adapter in my build for gaming. How is it?

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks so much, the wireless adapter works great, i was very impressed that it gets 4 bar wireless signal from his room its about 60 feet from the router and 3 wall in between.

SanjayP 1 point 15 months ago

I guess I will be getting this adapter soon. Thanks for the reply!

BlastedDany 1 point 14 months ago

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Its_Benjii 1 point 12 months ago

All I can say is "Good Job." I am a bit curious, would you recommend that monitor? You see, I'm building an over the top gaming rig (http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Its_Benjii/saved/sFsnTW) and I was going to go with 2 of those for a dual monitor setup, but I don't want to waste my money. Thanks, and I hope you're son enjoys this beast of a machine.

TheDonnierob submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

thanks, the monitors are great my son has not had a problem with them at all,yes i would recommend them.
