Pentium Anniversary Edition gaming build *Updated 7/18/2014*

Description

So I won some money at the casino and had a few parts laying around so why not build a new computer. I was going to buy an i3 but saw that micro center had the anniversary chip out and for sale so why the hell not.

CPU: So far its snappy but I wouldn't use it for anything heavy duty like video encoding. Facebook, email, office etc it works really well. Where it shines is in games like sc2, titanfall etc. Games that don't require a lot of threads or cores. Plus it over clocks very well!

MB: so far ASRock has not unlocked the over clocking options on this board so I might buy a z97 and use the pentium as a stop gap for an i5. Other than that I like it.

Storage: par for the course I had these laying around so I just threw them in the build.

Memory: had it laying around.

Video card: I had an r9 270 on a previous build...this one is just as good!

Case: Not really my favorite case after building in a nzxt or cooler master. I'll probably move this build into a corsair case.

PSU: modular and had a ton of positive ratings on the part sites.

WiFi adapter: 300mbps works well for gaming and streaming.

IF anyone is curious...the parts that i had already ive listed the prices below ram: 69.99 ssd: 69.99 hd: 54.99 case: 30.00 (rebate) wifi adapter: 19.99

which brings my total to: 561.85... not the cheapest build but i think worth it.

UPDATE:

Got the new ASRock z97M PRO4 installed. Had to update the BIOS to overclock the Chip. I'm a n00b to this but the update does have some predetermined settings. So far with my chip i have a stable 4.0 Overclock going. With that I get a solid 60fps on titanfall at 1080p with maxed settings and no AA. BF4 I run high settings at 60 FPS. So far I am impressed. Just need to read some more on messing with the OC so I can get higher clock speeds

UPDATE 7/18/2014

Switched over to a corsair 350d and added some blue cables since the new case has a window!

Sweet build for the price. Let me know how far you can OC that CPU :)

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 3 points 4 months ago

I will!

I also have a corsair h60 I can throw on there if need be

Jwood013 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

You should put the H60 in there now. It won't hurt anything.

Great build too! I love the parts and your cable management is fantastic!

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks! I'll try on air first...a couple of sites have guys reaching 4.7 ghz on the stock cooler

nehemiahawesome1 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

ikr most people do 4.5

godofchuck [1 Build] 6 points 4 months ago

Do yourself a favor and overclock the balls off that pentium.

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 2 points 4 months ago

Oh I will, and the r7 too..

srs922 [1 Build] 4 points 4 months ago

For more "WOW!" information on that CPU I highly suggest you watch this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evXpqpNhu_Y

kylepatrickswan [3 Builds] 2 points 4 months ago

Might want to return that mobo when you can and pick up Z97 board as you say in the description.

kylepatrickswan [3 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

btw, sooo lucky you're close enough to a Micro Center :(

pegotico 2 points 4 months ago

nice cable management +1

Nightwing324 2 points 4 months ago

Will this play Skyrim, and ESO, and if so what graphics settings?

lordkennedy99 1 point 20 days ago

The Pentium is powerful enough to play BF4 on Ultra 1080p at a solid 60 fps (with the 780 Ti [as you can see here in a comparison of the 4790K and the G3258: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUlS5Q7tEJI ]), so the processor is definitely capable. The GPU can for sure handle both games as well. You can see gameplay (of BF4 Ultra) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1amIBOs_6A

TL;DR: Yes

Gearzyy [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Ive been wanting to see a build with this CPU! How is it working out for you? +1

Ryio5 1 point 4 months ago

Definitely get a Z97 board! You could probably get it to 5GHz.

MainManMilez [4 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

I thought the "H" chipsets didn't support overclocking?

pegotico 1 point 4 months ago

boofheadfred -2 points 4 months ago

They don't. :)

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 2 points 4 months ago

Asus, MSI, and gigabyte have press releases saying that their h97 and b97 chipsets can oc the new pentium chip and the devils canyon chips. I jumped the gun and thought ASRock's would too, but they just went ahead and are releasing a special MB instead. BTW my z97 board is ordered, I'll update when its installed and oc'ed

MainManMilez [4 Builds] 0 points 4 months ago

So why is he talking about overclocking? He'll need a new board before he can really put that H60 to use.

boofheadfred 1 point 4 months ago

"MB: so far ASRock has not unlocked the over clocking options on this board so I might buy a z97 and use the pentium as a stop gap for an i5. Other than that I like it." - the desc.

Learn to read :)

Hope you have a good time with your rig. Cant wait till I save up enough to build my gaming rig.

PCMan416 1 point 4 months ago

Nice budget build! How many FPS do you get on Minecraft @ Max Settings?

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

not sure yet, waiting for my z97 board to come in on monday

PCMan416 1 point 4 months ago

ok, that's cool

daniel_43 1 point 4 months ago

is it smooth on ultra gaming???? i want to build the same CPU but the mobo I want use asrock h97-itx/ac

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

see the youtube link above... averages 70 fps in bf4!

daniel_43 1 point 4 months ago

pls comment my gaming build..i dint know if my rig can run ultra gaming :( http://pcpartpicker.com/user/daniel_43/saved/RK848d

You sure there isn't a bios update for the Motherboard? I would look into that if I were you, if you didn't do that already of course.

For those who don't know what we are talking about, the CPU is unlocked and because of this CPU Motherboard manufacturers are making H and B motherboards able to overclock.

Love this build, great job on the cabble management! I also have bought that CPU but it is more like a trophy for me just sitting in its box on my bookshelf as I also owned a PC with the very first Pentium I processor :P I just bought it for funsies :P +1!

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

I checked there isn't :(...im kind of upset because their h97 and z97 board look identical ! i bet it is but has to sort of lock out for OC

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Just so everyone knows Microcenter is having a killer sale on the g3258 CPU and an ATX MSI Z97 board for $99.00....making this build even better/cheaper!

JamzterS9 1 point 4 months ago

On intel website it says the G3258 supports upto DDR3-1333

BULLSEYE 1 point 4 months ago

Nice build, have a few questions (planning to buy this CPU): 1. with your current graphic's card how much fps do you get on 1080p ultra quality on the games you are playing? 2. Did you overclock it? if so, to how much? how is the temperature while overclocked on load? Thanks

Lord_Havershot 1 point 3 months ago

My friend recently bought this processor, It can run Battlefield 4 on ultra
1080p, It has trouble keeping it a solid 60fps. But neverless, It's an Athlon destroyer

BULLSEYE 1 point 3 months ago

alright thanks

TooGood [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

IF you OC the ever-loving crap out of that processor, you can actually get some pretty great results. As in go toe-to-toe with the X4-760K (IIRC) and even pull better frames. It's pretty interesting.

BlackMachDown [Submitter] [5 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Everything I have seen indicates that this at stock clocks smokes an OC 750k.

TooGood [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

There we go, that's the one.

InvincibleFlash1008 1 point 3 months ago

Nice rig especially for its price :)

Neat cable management.

ShamarHoltz [1 Build] 1 point 1 month ago

A lot of love for this build :) from everyone here too..._^

Nice dude. I'm thinking bout getting a g3258 to go with my 7770, but I can't decide between a FX 6300 or the g3258. The pentium is a bit more expensive with a board

Ksongs [1 Build] 1 point 1 month ago

If the pentium is going to cost more I'd go with the fx 6300. The pentium is a great CPU but in cpu intensive programs or games it's going to be a lot slower than an i3 or 6300 even when overclocked. If you live near a microcenter they have a bundle the pentium with a z97 board for $100.

ShamarHoltz [1 Build] 1 point 1 month ago

can you send me a link for that combo? I can't seem to find it on the site
