To improve usability I have removed the notion of an "active part list", and have also changed how saved and completed builds are updated.

Starting now, any changes made to a part list will not automatically update a saved or completed build. Instead, to update a saved or completed build, use the part list "Save As" button and select the build you would like to update. You can also save your part list to a new saved or completed build.

Before this update, you could switch the active part list to a previously saved or completed build. Then any changes made would be automatically be reflected in your saved or completed build.

In retrospect this was not a good design decision. I tried to make the currently active part list obvious, but in the end no matter what I did I couldn't make it visible enough. Changes to saved and completed builds were made accidentally because it wasn't clear that they were the active part list. I received a lot of feedback to this effect, so I sought out to fix things.

To remedy this problem, I reverted the part list editing behavior to be similar to how to it was prior to the previous changes. Changes made to a part list no longer automatically update a saved or completed build. Now if you want to update a previously saved or completed build, you can use the "Save As" button to either select a build and overwrite it, or create an entirely new saved/completed build.

This will hopefully prevent accidental changes to saved and completed builds. I apologize to anyone affected aversely by the previous strategy, and I appreciate your patience with me and the site as I find the best approach. I hope that this new system is safer, and in the end, more usable. As always, if you have feedback or suggestions, definitely let me know.

Thanks,

Philip

I liked the ability to not have to save after every piece change. If people just didn't willy nilly change their choices without prior research you wouldn't have to worry about backing up to a previous point. Only add pieces if you're sure you want to upgrade it.

Since I have only one build, this makes little difference for me except now I have to remember to Save As. Be that as it may, I think this new system is the most correct approach; but perhaps you could add a second "Save As" button to the bottom of the parts list? To make it less likely you'll forget?

As far as I can see, there isn't a "New Build" button, which would alleviate the problem. I, for one, liked the previous system.

That can certainly be added. At this point, the "Remove All" is essentially the same, though it doesn't prompt you to save yet before it wipes the slate clean. Maybe it would be worth renaming it (and adding a save prompt in case you didn't want to lose your current part list)?

A save prompt with a check box to not show again if preferred would be an excellent addition to the site.

Nice, great work!

Much better! I was having issues accidentally overwriting my old builds and deleting my new builds.

Thanks!

I like the new approach to saves because I would change one thing in my build and it would just create a whole new build. Great job with the site Philip although I do have one suggestion. I am not sure if this is an error on my part but when I enter in the optional URL to a custom part it does not make it a hyperlink. I would very much like this feature if it was not the original intention of the optional URL. I also would like to manually enter in a price for a custom URL so I can have it add to the total cost. This would help me keep track of my total build cost after the water cooling equipment I am getting.

Thanks for the feedback! The optional URL field is something I plan to show soon. I had hidden it by default because I suspected it would be used by spammers... and it has been. So I'm looking into handling that properly. I think I have a solution for it, but I'm still tweaking it here and there before pushing it live. Also, adding a price field for the custom URL is definitely in the works. I'd expect both the URL change and the ability to add a price to roll out about the same time.

Sounds good I will keep an eye out for it.

Has anyone figured out how to name the builds yet? Or is that not possible?

philip [Staff,Submitter] [7 Builds] 2 points 22 months ago

It is possible - are you trying to name a saved build? If so, once you save it, on the saved builds page there should be a rename button for that part list.

Ok thanks. :)

Would it be possible for you to make it So that when you save, to choose a name for your new build, Instead of having to go and rename it

Hello, I read a while back that you're working on a mobile version. How close are we to getting a mobile app for this beloved site?

Whenever it comes, I'll buy more of your merchandise, which is contingent on also expanding your selection (e.g. adding hoodies, thermoses, etc.)

The weather gets colder from these days so we're kinda needing warm clothes. ;)

philip [Staff,Submitter] [7 Builds] 2 points 22 months ago

You know, I guess I never thought to add warm weather clothes to the store - where I live it usually stays warm enough that you can wear T-shirts all year long... I'll look into some long sleeved / hoodie versions. :)

On the mobile site - in all honesty it's still a ways away (for now). Though it is something I'm actively looking into. I certainly haven't forgotten about it.

Just a question, I have noticed that parts are not showing up as available at memory express in the by merchant view. Specifically motherboards. The Gigabyte sniper m3 and the asus maximus gene both don't show up, is there a reason for this or is this a bug?

philip [Staff,Submitter] [7 Builds] 1 point 22 months ago

Hmmm. I'll look into it. Thanks for letting me know.

I personally don't see it as a huge deal to have to click that little "Save" button after changing pieces. I like the new change.
