Description

This is my personal server and NAS.

Built in the old case for my main build (https://pcpartpicker.com/b/kjm8TW) and all the main components are second-hand, other than the NIC.

It runs RockStor and currently has two 1TB drives in a RAID 1, but soon that will be upgraded to 6+ TB in a RAID 5 or 6.

Now it is running 4 1TB drives in a RAID5 array, for a maximum if about 3.74TB of available space (not calculating the RAID overhead)

Houses my music, photos and movie collection.

Also, PCPP apparently doesn't have the FX-6300 listed, which is what is in this build. YES, it's overkill, but it is what I found on Craig's List in my price range.. that was more than dual-core.

So, yeah.

nice NAS! Always happy to see non gaming rigs on here. Great use of parts and great bargain hunting, damn!

95% are used, some from CL and some repurposed from my other PC. Only one brand new part.

For NAS purpose, raid 5-6 will do perfectly. If your "server" features require more performance than a standard NAS, avoid raid 5-6 and go with 0+1 (raid 10).

I made that mistake on a server and didn't go with raid 10 when I made the initial config so now I have to suffer from my poor choices!

Right now the most CPU-hungry thing on it is Plex, so I think I'm good for now. Also if I need better disk performance for something, I can just make a different pool of disks with a different raid setup.

yes that's what I mean, if you need disk performance go with 0+1
