Description

My Music Production & Gaming Coffee Lake Build

This is my second official build, but I'll consider it my first REAL attempt as I really took a lot of time researching hardware and making sure this would be aesthetically pleasing. My main goal was to create music production and high end gaming machine. Pricing for some of these items came out to be a little less than what's listed

Meshify C : I really loved the look of this case. I wanted something that kept all my parts cool and looked sleek, and this really delivers in both areas. Building in this thing was an absolute dream compared to the Mini Atx case I came from. Tons of room for cable management, storage, and no issues at all mounting any of the fans. Airflow is FANTASTIC in this thing, with all parts registering below average temperatures reported online.

MSI GeoForce GTX 1080 8GB I actually got this NEW at a local auction for $400. I couldn't justify not buying it for that price! Fantastic card, but when I built my case it was running at 83 C, which seemed extremely hot given the effort I put into cooling. After doing some research, I bought some Thermal Grizzly thermal compound and cleaned / changed out the paste on the GPU. After doing so, my temps were down by as much as 17 DEGREES!

Coffee Lake 8700K Big upgrade from my 4670k. This thing is an absolute monster and preforms very, very well. We already know it's one of the best for gaming, but as far as the music production side goes, this thing has helped me out TREMENDOUSLY.

NZXT FANS & CPU COOLER I heard the 8700k ran a bit hot, and this cooler preforms amazingly (27c idle & 39-45c under load). I love the way these fans look, and I actually bought the 2 pack with the NZXT rgb controller.

960 EVO M.2 Noticing a fantastic boost to startup and load times. The build in heatsink on the motherboard is an added bonus. This thing helps my workflow and speeds up games to lightning speeds.

Dell 2716dg This is the new revision of this monitor (A07) with almost no color banding. Playing on a 144HZ G Sync monitor coming from my little 1080p 60hz monitor is indescribable. Amazing colors, tear-free, smooth as butter frames.

Focusrite 2i4 external sound & JBL monitors Used primarily for instruments. I have my headphones and monitors also hooked up to this. Sounds are extremely vivid, use less resources, and make switching from headphones to speakers (or both at the same time) a breeze. MUCH better than any internal sound card.

Overall I'm extremely happy with the way this turned out, and building it was a blast.

The inside's lit up like a Christmas tree.

islandg@m3r 1 Build 5 points 11 months ago

Awesome and very festive looking build! +1 =)

P.S. Just recently I was debating between 1600X, the 8700k and the 1920X CPUs, was so tempted to get the 8700k, but 400 bucks for a 6-core is hard to swallow that's like 8-core territory, so if it ever goes on sale in mid to low 300s I might reconsider, but my mind is currently thinking either

  1. Going balls to the wall spend a chunk of money and give in to the Thread-ripper 12-core with custom loop to create my ultimate dream PC OR

  2. Settling with a solid all rounder that is a good balance for everything, the 1600X but with an AIO cooler.

My enthusiast side is saying take the f** leap and spend 3Gs on a system that will last forever and a day with the water-cooling i always wanted to do for years since I am buying 1080ti anyways....but then my budget angel in my head is telling me take a f**** step back, breath and get mid-range & solid performing CPU......uhhh my stomach is in knots with these decisions!!!!!

Nikola.G 1 Build 4 points 11 months ago

I know the feeling, but my wife says - just get the best you can get, stop buying mediocre stuff

Crazycatman 4 Builds 1 point 10 months ago

Same. Get the best and waste less. Better to get more than waste more, in terms of laying around parts and new upgrades that only improve on what should have been the best in the first place.

st0rch submitter 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

I agree with Nikola, I went mid-range on the last build I did, and am wayyyy happier with this. It will last a lot longer, and you'll be much happier using it every day. If you have the money, I'd go for it.

wolfen281 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

I think we're hanging out in the same pre-build bar ;)

islandg@m3r 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

I'm stuck between color schemes as well, trying to decide between either black, purple with teal accents or white, silver with blue accents.....another conundrum =( Or should I just w8 for Zen+ coming out in February and March.....

Wi1dCard 3 points 11 months ago

Why not both?

This is kind of what rgb products were made for, not the unicorn vomit many people advertise. Go black and white with silver accents and use your lighting for color.

PS: I currently run white and purple lighting with teal accents, looks fantastic

wolfen281 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

I didn't even know about the Zen coming out. WTF dude :)>

How many saved part lists do you have? I have about 15. I thought I had it narrowed down to a sweet little LianLi brushed aluminum mITX case...and then I just saw the Phantek Evolve X. argh.

Anyways, I like the silver/blue and purple/black thing. Teal is wee bit evil in my universe...not as evil as yellow, but...it's your build.

cheers!

OrbitalBuzzsaw 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

I've got about 60 saved part lists, so you're the sane one here

islandg@m3r 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

Teal evil? y???

wolfen281 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

As long as you concede yellow is definitely evil I will give teal a bye. ;)

OrbitalBuzzsaw 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Wait for Ryzen+

Sellin_Hugs 1 point 8 months ago

This is me right now. Ive got $3500 to spend on a whole PC set up ( including monitor and other peripherals.) Should i build a medium grade pc and get everything all at once OR spend 100% of my $3500 budget on the rig and be set for the next 20 years. I would have to save again for a monitor and stuff. I have a 1080p tv and an xbox controller for the time being.

This is such a nice, clean, well thought out build. You definitely put some effort into thinking this one out. Definitely a +1, and congratz on the feature.

st0rch submitter 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

Thank you! I just realized it got featured O.O Appreciate it.

PlasmusAng 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

Jusr wow

Anyansayo 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

I was basically planning on doing a scaled down version of this with a 7700K and a 1070 and a bit less SSD storage. Looks great. I have always loved the aesthetics of the NZXT Kraken X62.

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Same, the NZXT fans / Kraken are just designed so well. The Kraken is insane when it comes to performance.

Wi1dCard 2 points 11 months ago

I use that same monitor and webcam haha

for 144hz and gsync that monitor is an insane value if you can get it on sale tbh. I was able to get it for 350 on black friday and am very impressed.

Zite 2 points 11 months ago

same, though amazon shipping times... at least i got a free 10$ and priority shipping lol

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Same! What a freaking deal right? That means you probably got the new revision as well. Monitor is unbeatable at that pricepoint,+ a three year warranty.

DRogGTX 2 points 11 months ago

That really is great deal on a 1080! Love the RGB, +1.

ixit 2 points 11 months ago

This build turned out gorgeous. Nice work.

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Thank you!

Minomir 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Nice job! Those RGB components go really nice together. :) +1 Odd question, but I really like your wall art. Where could I get hands on such a pictures?

st0rch submitter 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

They are just different band posters for the most part, is there one you liked specifically?

Minomir 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Radiohead, Hail to the Thief :)

I've wanted to get my hands on something like that for a long time... I've even tried to have one painted by my friend, but it ended up horribly, haha.

Minomir 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Nice!! Thank You :)

x1034 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Looks great! Cant wait to add the kraken on my build. did you just lay the hue on the shroud?

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Yeah there was a spot right on the shroud, I set it there and it looks great.

That_Dude_Adam 1 point 3 months ago

is it just sitting there loose or did you use double sided taped or something

Pøldi 1 point 11 months ago

Respect man! Looks fantastic!

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Thanks!

Maple_Syrup 2 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

My dream build right here +1

Djallal 1 point 11 months ago

a very nice build one thing though, the cable management on your setup do that and you'll have i dream setup

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Yeah I was so tired after getting this all set up that I didn't do anything with the cables externally! Thank you!

Robertbert 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

+1 What software do you use for music production? Would you agree the 32 GB ram in conjunction with that cpu also has something to do with enhance perf? What were running before?

st0rch submitter 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

I switch between FL Studio and Ableton. And ABSOLUTELY the 32GB's gave a huge boost in conjunction with the CPU. Coming from 8 GB ddr3 / a 4xxx series processor, it was a huge jump.

Robertbert 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Thanks for the info!

DPRutledge 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

What kind of FPS are you looking at?

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Depending on the game and the settings around 150 - 220+. It rarely ever dips, which is really nice.

EuphoniumsNStuff 1 point 11 months ago

Where's the cream?? +92

philphaser 12 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

I like your build but even more so i always loved those headphones.

st0rch submitter 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

They are just fantastic arent they?

philphaser 12 Builds 1 point 10 months ago

Had 'em, killed 'em. Unfortunatelly not very suitable for traveling but i loved them more than i do my HD25.

M_Thommo 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Really nice build! Glad it got featured as it was well deserved! :D

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Thank you!

wolfen281 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

csgolisting 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

wow, great build! But why you didn't go with the 1080 ti?

Mrchoclo90 8 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

Night = RGB

Very good PC, very nice and with a huge performance for both professional work and gaming in a resolution of 1440p to 144Hz. Congratulations and very good photos =D

Njbowron 1 point 11 months ago

I have that same Tool Poster! Also, great build.

Gooberdad 10 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

More pictures please :)

VapelordTakeTheL 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

I think you should have gone with a Strix GPU becuase it is RGB

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

If I was buying at full price maybe. I got this card for $400. Too good to pass up.

Zite 1 point 11 months ago

Very noice build, but Iam very curious, were you also skeptic for the reviews on the kraken x62? (im getting the x52) most people say the pump starts having troubles and most of the time dies around the 6 month mark? thanks, also nice build, though i dont know how to say this, i went with even more rgb than you lol.

KnoDeWae 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I've had the x52 for over a year now, works fine :)

ssjg5rlly 1 point 11 months ago

This would have been insane if you used the Inwin Infinity.

lx_kz 1 point 11 months ago

Very clean, powerful, and overall nice build! Loved the lighting. Also, thank you so much for taking some effort on the photos :) <3

+1

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Thank you!

joshmchugh 1 point 11 months ago

Very Nice! I am building almost the same thing. Had a question about the RAM and CPU Cooler, saw some people saying the CPU Cooler tubes would push on the closest RAM. Did you run into this issue?

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

I was afraid of this at first, but didn't have an issue. It comes close but it's fine. Not sure if this is the case with other brands though.

Swagboy 1 point 11 months ago

Alright so I'm in the process of ordering parts for my first PC build and your build is very similar to mine. The way you have assembled the inside is exactly how I envision mine to be. I even have the same monitor and mouse. This build is beautiful and mine is going to be soooo similar, it just makes me happy. 11/10 +++++1

st0rch submitter 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

Then you're going to be very happy with it! I'm loving it (this monitor is fantastic for the price)

barry242 1 point 11 months ago

did you purchase the nzxt internal usb hub?

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Yeah, It came with the fan 2 pack.

barry242 1 point 10 months ago

now where did you mount your nzxt internal usb hub

st0rch submitter 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

It's sitting flat on the shroud on the right side.

KnoDeWae 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Hey there, awesome build! Was wondering if your Kraken cooler is pushing any of your RAM sticks to the right a bit. I’m going for a new build soon with the exact same motherboard and I already have the trident z RGB and NZXT Kraken x52 which currently was pushing my ram sticks to the right so I had to tilt it to clockwise in order for them to fit since the pump hoses coming out of them was pushing the sticks. Does this problem occur with this motherboard as well?

Thanks!

KnoDeWae 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

just saw the comments as I was on my phone as I wrote this, seems like below you said you didn't have an issue, which is good because I planned on getting this motherboard anyway. Thanks! :)

PrivatePengu 1 point 7 months ago

Can you post a link of your background picture in the fourth and fifth image? It's really nice looking
