Description

My goal with this project was to spend as little money as possible while building something that I could play most modern games on Ultra/High settings. Which is why I reused as many parts from old comps I have and spent most of my money on the CPU & GPU. I was also able to get Win 7 Pro from work for free so that was awesome.

I'm not going to go through all the parts because they are all very common parts, but I will say that I really like these new UEFI mobos. This ASRock makes it very easy to play with the components of your computer. I am however pissed I didn't get my I/O shield with mine and have not heard from support yet.

The MSI 7870 came with a free copy of Crysis 3, so big score at that price IMO. Also noticed a lot of people on newegg saying it runs hot but I have not experienced this yet.

Also, I got $53 off of the case at officemax because I was able to use someone elses Maxperks, that is why it was so cheap.

I could have saved another $10 by scoring that 840 for 89.99 this past week at newegg and I could have got the Mobo for $ 85 if I had waited but it was the last part I needed and want to get this show on the road.

Nice build!

I wish I could get Windows 7 from work for free :P

Dude, can I get one of your free window 7 operating system disks? :D

Hahaha sorry I'll actually be needing them for corporate VMs and stuff - unless you want to pay me for them, that's an entirely different story then ;)

Good cable management. Good part choice. Good PC. Good job.

You should high five yourself for an awesome build since I can't :)

Up vote for taking pride in your work and actually posting pics. I don't see how so many people post their builds on here with crappy cable management and two pics, one of the boxes and one of the sloppy mess.

Amazing cable management! I have the CX500 as well and really didn't believe it would be possible to clean them up that nicely. You've certainly inspired me to go and redo my cabling!

It was a real pain. I used a LOT of zip ties. But I think for most cases it is doable. Go get'em tiger. :)

Do the cables in the back push up against the side panel? I have the CM Storm Scout 2, and it looks like you might have some more space there than I do, but I'm not quite sure. I remember reading somewhere that you don't want the panel to push down too hard on the cables, which is why I was worried about routing too many cables back there. Right now, all of my extra cables are tied together in the space next to the PSU.

Yes, there was one spot that wasn't definitely tight when closing the case. I think that with better planning I could have avoided even that. There was quite a bit of room in my opinion to cram wires, especially in that bottom trough-like area. Maybe I should not have closed it with it being tight like that, but I'm just going to leave it for now. Thank you for telling me though.

Added more pics. Sorry if they are dark. Hoping to OC the CPU and see the windows experience improve. Will post more data after I benchmark it.

what kind of OC are you getting? I have the same combo, and I plan to OC as much as I can

What graphics setting does this default Crysis 3 to and how many FPS does it get at said setting? I'm interested, since I got the GTX 660, and I've heard that it compares closely to the 7870 GHz, but a quantitative comparison would be helpful. My card (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-n660tf2gd5oc) sets it to High and gets 60 FPS almost everywhere, never dropping below 50.

I will get you some hard numbers soon, just need some time. Been busy lately. It is defaulting to high on Crysis if memory serves me, I'll double check later.

With no overclocking at all I am getting 35 FPS with Crysis on High graphics settings. There are a ton of specific settings that I'm not sure of but I remember Anti aliasing is set to low. 60 FPS in Skyrim with 8 texture mods and Ultra graphics

Hmm the Crysis difference is pretty surprising considering how close the 660 and 7870 are supposed to be. I haven't tried any mods in Skyrim, but I'll install the Skyrim HD mod and see how much of a hit my FPS takes.

Did you adjust the settings for Crysis at all? Maybe the game is just optimized for the Nvidia driver. I will play with it some more and report back.

Are you at full 1080?

  • 1 point

Not 1080, but 1680x1050. As for the settings, I didn't adjust anything - just checked out what it automatically set itself to. I'd be surprised if it's optimized for nVidia given the AMD Evolved loading screen at the beginning of the game.

Well I can't really say what is accounting for the difference in performance unless AMD sucks so bad that their hardware can't play their very own games. :P I am more than pleased with this card though, especially given the price-point.

OK so I went back and changed my screen reso to 1680x1050 like on your machine and my fps jumped to 55-60 fps! So I guess they are more comparable then we thought.

I'm sure this is a dumb question but, does this run games on ultra high/high?

  • 1 point

Yes everything is running on Ultra without any overclocking except Crysis. When I get an aftermarket cpu cooler I will overclock it though. Right now its bone stock.

Hey man, just wanted to let you know that I changed the screen resolution to 1680x1050 on Crysis 3 and the FPS jumped up to 55-60 fps.

I really like it. I haven't had any problems with it. The UEFI on it is great as well.
