Description

I wanted a machine for gaming. That's it. Fast, beautiful gaming. Prior to this i was using a PC that had hand me downs and new parts from 2011. So this was definitely going to be a HUGE upgrade for me.

I decided for the I5 since i was not going to do any more then games, YouTube, Netflix and Reddit. I live in a very hot environment and even with AC i wanted to make sure my CPU was always cool so i opted for the H100I v2 the bonus was how sexy it looks. Since i didn't need anything crazy for my Mobo I went with something that would be good on the eyes with my build and had just what i needed. I Z170 gaming M5 is exactly that. Lots of USB 3.0 on the rear, Killer Networking, and a beautiful red for my windowed case. RAM is ram at the end of the day so i decided to get enough and just for kicks as far as my wallet would approve. As for any recent build I opted for a reliable and "cheap" SSD for my OS and my main game that i use daily. All other data goes into to great 1Tb Western Digital. Now if i was going to get the most amazing graphics i couldn't cheap out on my graphics card. I feel in love when i saw the Strix ROG 1080. FAST, that's what Asus should of had called this card. The performance of this build went hand on hand with the aesthetics of it. The Thermaltake View 27 is one case that will leave you drooling when its powered on. This machine is powered by a great power supply for ensure all components are on par with each other.

After watching many hours of Youtube "how to" pc builds i decided it was time. And it all went smoothly. Not a single issue with this set up. My main advice would be to leave the GPU until very last as it is HUGE and it gets in the way of making connections. The only thing i will add/upgrade is adding 2 more Thermaltake RED Riing fans. One on the front, above the radiator, and the second one on top of the power supply shroud or basement. Both will be powered by the GPU so it can better cool it since summer will be here anytime. And yes it is a red/black built. The pics dont do justice to the RGB of the guts or the peripherals.

Part Reviews

Video Card

WOW. That is my only reaction to this GPU. Very fast and very quiet. I was able to OC using Tweak II to in-game @ 2101Mhz with only 65* C. And of course the RGB is all a bonus.

Edit: More good news. I installed two more fans but i powered them using the GPU fan connectors. Tweak II only has one set up to allow them to run when the GPU hits 60* C. At that points the two fans spin up to 50% and leave my GPU at that temperature. Very happy knowing Asus did a very huge improvement with that addition.

Case

Great case for views. Always have a microfiber cloth handy since it collects dust like nobody's business. For a newer case i would expect more USB 3.0 ports in the front, as mine only has one 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0. Not very user friendly for cleaning the front filter. The entire front face has to be removed and its clipped in. I feel like one of those clips will break after removing and reinstalling several times to clean the front intake filter.

Edit: I installed 2 more Thermaltake Riing Red LED fans to the case. One up front above the radiator for intake and one on top of the basement. The front take was a easy except for the front panel being difficult to remove and leave hanging to the side since its clipped in a and there are cables attached to it. The second fan gave me the most problems. It sits right below the Mobo, too close. I had to cut one corner of the fan mount to make it fit since it was hitting some Mobo connections if i tried to force it into place. The best solution would of been for Thermaltake to make the Mobo stand higher to allow for a little more space for the fan to fit into place or move the fan mounts forward towards the window to allow the screws to fit into place.

Keyboard

Very nice click feel on the keyboard and mouse. Very nice accents on the keyboard. It looks very up to date on looks. The red light does not light thru the keys very well though. Its very visible with the monitor on and only appreciated when the entire room is dark. As for the mouse is very different. The 3 areas where there is red light look very bright and nice.

Speakers

For the price i didn't expect this great sound. Very happy with gaming/music/movies audio. No complaints at all. The controller only comes with a volume knob, which is nice so the user doesn't mess up the bass from the sub-woofer.

Very interesting looking case. Great build btw! Loving the black and red theme. If you're into aesthetics, I'd recommend black and red wires for the motherboard and gpu, really makes a difference.

Thank you! And yes indeed very interesting/different case. I have seen lots of extensions or sleeves for the PSU cables but i am still undecided on them. I have read a lot where its been said to not use other cables that didnt come with the PSU itself so that kinda scared me away from them.
