Description

I built this system just over two years ago and went with red and black having really liked MSI's gaming theme at the time. Since then I have done some upgrades/additions and was getting tired of red and black. Plus I was still running SLI 770's with only 2gb of vram and looking to upgrade the GPU's.

Well I came across the Fallout 4 Edition 970 and got it for a good price and figured its time for a change. I sleeved the cables myself and had my girlfriend use a laser at work to cut the Fallout 4 font you see on the RAM. I still have a few tweaks to go as I ran out of blue plasti dip and the fans look too white to me. Also I need to mask the red mobo light at the bottom and cover a couple mustard and ketchup fan cables. Overall I am happy with the way it turned out. This was the first pc I have ever built and have never taken one apart as much as I had to for this project. Thanks for looking and any tips or advice is appreciated.

I included the pictures of my build before the change so that you could see the difference. Sorry about the quality but I have a low budget phone.

Part Reviews

CPU

This thing has been chugging along for two years on a 4.2 mobo software overclock with zero issues. I hit 4.6 but it was unstable and honestly I dont feel I know enough to get it stable. Very happy with its performance so far.

CPU Cooler

Two years and still going strong. Thought about changing to the GT but I really like being able to change the color of the Corsair symbol. Only gripe is the stock fans were pretty loud as most are. Changed them to Noctua's and no issues since.

Thermal Compound

Its thermal paste. Was inexpensive and reviews were really good. I replaced the CPU and both GPU's thermal paste with this.

Motherboard

Great motherboard and love the looks. The bios and pin placements are nice too. Its my first mobo and Im not real technical so I cant really say much else.

Memory

Bought it for the looks to match my system and it had good reviews.

Storage

It has been a great SSD for me so far. Windows boots up in 10 seconds or so.

Storage

Got this on sale around Black Friday as an eventual replacement. Have since decided to use it for game installation so that I dont fill my main SSD and I still have SSD speed.

Storage

Cheap but fairly high rated HDD. Needed something with plenty of room for all my game files, movies and music.

Video Card

I got a good deal on it and was looking for something to pair with my other 970. I really like the looks of the Strix cards. Also it doesnt clash or draw attention away from the Fallout 4 970.

Case

Originally this build was housed in a Define R4. I was afraid the thermals would be too high running SLI so I did some research and came across this. Fell in love with it lol. I really like that the PSU is in the back and it has great airflow.

Power Supply

Went with this based off reviews and price to performance at the time. Has been a solid PSU with no issues and it meets my systems power needs.

Monitor

Nice little monitor I already had. I use it to put my monitoring software on.

Monitor

Great monitor and love the size. This is my primary screen for gaming and watching movies. Just wish I paid the extra $100 or so and got the better model at the time.

Monitor

Got a good deal and wanted something a bit bigger than what I had. I mainly use this for surfing the web.

Keyboard

Looks great and needed to upgrade. Went for this because the blue switches over the other model. Also it matches my mouse lol.

Mouse

Great mouse. Read a ton of reviews before purchasing it and I am glad I went with this mouse. Would have liked to have the right side of it come out like the left. My pinky tends to drag on the mouse pad.

My OCD is pretty much killing me right now! °_o
Really want to see two EVGA SSC in this masterpiece, plus Noctua IPPCs with yellow and blue chromax.
The custom paint job is one of the best i've ever seen!

I like the Strix but I would have also preferred another SSC. Unfortunately I wasnt able to find a deal like I did on the Strix.

Not big on the different GPU's either but I got a good deal on the Strix. With NVidia launching their 10 series the 900 series should drop a fair bit. I may swap it for another SSC if I can in the future.

Really like the customizations you have done for your build and I am so glad you got away from red and black :P

Also highly appreciate the GPU stand, looks like a super custom addition must have cost you heaps ;)

But the big holes in the bottom of your case, where im assuming HDD's used to be are a little strange and would look better if you covered those over with something (just my opinion)

You definitely have my +1 good sir

Thank you. Dont tell anyone but its actually a q-tip I painted with a sharpie... lol. Yes the holes are from where there were quick swap HDD trays. Once I can afford some fans I plan on modifying those holes to bring air in from the bottom.

Hehe I knew it would be something epic such as a q-tip :P I was thinking more along the tines of a drinking straw though.

That's a good idea, then all you need is some feet on the bottom.

Perhaps a Nuke on each corner :P

NOTE: when searching nuke on Google images on a work computer, don't forget the "K" because you get a lovely surprise......
