Description

First RGB build, and first build since around 2014. This overall went extremely smooth, and the NZXT case had a lot to do with it. I'm used to having full towers, but even for a mid-tower this was a pleasure to work in. The cable management is reason enough to buy these cases.

The only issue I ran into: The Kraken X62 has its pipes on the memory slot side, and for most of the Asus Z278 Maximus boards this can completely block the first RAM slot. The Strix series avoids this issue BUT they do lean slightly against the first ram stick. Not enough to be a worry but it is a thing. NZXT needs to adjust their design and/or allow the logo be rotatable.

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

Super high quality, super easy install. Would buy again. If I had one gripe it's that the cable bundle you plug into the unit could be more compact/bundled to allow for a cleaner look.

Monitor

Considering the price the backlight bleed issue I have on my unit makes this a bit annoying. Standard IPS glow is one thing, but there are actual bleed spots. The panel both Asus and Acer are using for 27" 144/165hz IPS are just going to apparently suffer from these issues. If you can swing it you'd probably be happier going for the ultra wide or another size to avoid this specific panel.

I was looking at getting the same card and case. Does the card cover up the NZXT logo on the vertical strut? Also how does the card look as far as Sag? I was thinking about getting a Support Bracket

  • 1 point

It does cover it partially, but hey, there's no way to escape that. And with this motherboard the sag is minimal to non-existent.

This build is perfect ♥ Got some items that i have my eye on it

Some questions: -What were the Bitspower Thumb Screws for (what was the part that needed to be screwed)? (sorry for bad english)

-The NZXT HUE+ RGB Color Changing LED Controller comes already with the Led Stripes? If yes, how much?

-What are the configuration of your case fans (rear and top ones)? Do you have both pulling air from inside to outside or what?

I'm looking forward to your answers

  • 2 points

I got my hue+ with two of the AER RGB 120 fans and then the led strip(s) were purchased separately

  • 2 points

I didn't end up using the thumbscrews as they were too wide to fit in most places. I ended up just buying some flat white spraypaint and painting a couple that came with the case. So, a waste of money unfortunately.

The Hue+ comes with 4 strips. It's enough to go around most of the side window.

Rear is a 120mm Aer RGB blowing out, top is a 140mm Aer RGB blowing out. It's required they exhaust as you can't really mount them the other way (maybe you could but you'd cover the light ring). The front Kraken radiator pulls in air with two 140mm.

whippleshuffle once again, congrats for the perfect build ♥ I felt in love with your build that i want to make a similar one for me too :P

  • 1 point

Sorry to bother you again whippleshuffle. I forgot to ask this.

This case will have negative pressure, due to the 2 fans blowing out. My question is:

Is that a problem for you? How do you manage to fight back that negative pressure (when idle and when under load [ex: gaming])? How are your temps on the CPU and GPU (once again while idle and while under load)?

I'm really sorry to pop up once again. It just came to mind this problem

Fantastic build mate. Sorry if someone has asked this already but I'might just wondering how the Strix motherboard registers with such high frequency RAM? Because you have selected 4200mhz RAM and if I'm not mistaken those Strix boards only run upwards of 3000?

Cheers mate

Aside from SSD brand and case color, this is the same exact build I've had saved for awhile now. Just waiting on my yearly bonus before pulling the trigger. I think it's the one purchase I'm most pleased about. Especially for the price, the quality of the pieces, the ergonomics, features, included items, etc. Everything else in the build is awesome, really met my expectations, but the NZXT case specifically really exceeded them.

Thanks for the impressions of it. It's pretty much between it and one of two Phanteks cases but I really love the look of the white S340.

i wonder what case can fit 2 ASUS ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI???

  • 1 point

I was thinking about that. you'd probably have to remove/move any drives at the bottom plate area. At least the Hue+ there seems like it'd hit the 1080ti cowl.

  • 1 point

They'd fit in this one I'd just need to move the Hue+.

White on white. I'd recommend against the motherboard 6 pin (not really visible enough) and double check your GPU inputs. You can customize each one instead of buying this bundle, which I'd recommend.

With the Strix it's really almost unnoticable unless you are super crazy about perpendicular lines (I am) and are really squinting to see it while looking at it straight on. I don't know if the steel around the PCIe slots on the Asus boards help here, but whatever the reason it's really minimal.

Wow that is a beautiful PC! I'm looking to do an aesthetics RGB upgrade for my rig and I was wondering since you purchased the NZXT AER fans, if I should go with those or the Corsiar HD 120s? Great build, +1

  • 2 points

I looked at the Corsair a lot but the diffused color of the Aer RGB (IMO) is classier and nicer looking. The Corsair shines through a lot brighter/harsher, but that could totally be what you're going for. I want to find a good solution to diffuse my LED strips as I think they're a bit too harsh/you can see the light points too clearly.

For the cables, he linked the web site in previous comments. And this case doesn't support optical drive. That's why pcpartpicker doesn't show the list.

Awesome build, man! Quick question, though. Are you using the 2x USB 2.0 headers for front-of-case connections and the x62? If so, is your HUE+ plugged into right side of the ROG_EXT header (or some similar combo)? I have a similar setup and I'm trying to figure out if I need a USB 2.0 hub.

  • 1 point

Hi, I have a small question! My build looks for the most part the same as yours. As with the X62 memory slot problem, I'll be using the same Gskill tridentz on my z270f (you said you notice it a bit but it won't interfere a lot) and it doesn't do harm). It's my first build, and on the most builds they install their Cooling first. With this problem, is it easier to place the x62 first on the Mobo, or should I first put my ram on it? (So I don't have to disassemble everything).

Sorry for my English!
