mATX build (Flood Relief)

by R0ot

Description

So the story/reason behind this build was that in late August my house in Donegal was flooded. It destroyed most of my worldly possessions and was shortly after my wife and I separating. So a bit of a low moment....

Two machines were destroyed my original build which I changed into a my wife's machine https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fzhskT and my current build at the time https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WRRmkT

So with insurance covering everything and my ex-wife only needing a basic enough laptop I thought with my rebuild - "Go Big or Go Home!". I started to plan what would eventually become this machine and I even managed to stay under budget even with the Vive added in!

Straight away if you are getting this Bitfenix case it is NOT deep enough to accommodate the 1080 TI HOF edition. Even to get it into the mATX board an in the case I had to remove the back plate from the ports side.

As of 23rd October 2017 I'm awaiting delivery of two internal USB 2.0 splitters and and a USB 3.0 to 2.0 adapter: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00O0HC3Y0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The reasoning for this is simple, the board is amazing but it only has 2 USB 2.0 internal slots and the case consumes one, the H80i v2 consumes one and the NZXT Hue+ consumes one! So the build is not fully complete yet and I could do a much better job at cable tidying.

Getting a custom side made to accommodate the over-sized card I'm thinking of a cut in the case side I have an a protruding acrylic panel. Time to go a hunting or hit of the vacuum former friend.

Peripherals Keyboard - (Edit) Changed to the K70 LUX RGB as the K95 was only available in AZERTY format =/
Headset - I love the HyperX Cloud II so this was a rebuy from my original build
Mouse - G502 is just a fantastic mouse, simple, stylish and to the point.
Monitor - Wow I mean what can I say this thing is HUGE and the quality is astounding. I've never had a monitor this size before and I can't even think of something better out there.

Part Reviews

CPU

Fantastic CPU, no issues with any games and definitely not the bottleneck in any build.

CPU Cooler

Quiet, great UI for modification and about a 4/5 for ease of installation even in an mATX case.

Motherboard

Great board it's an mATX but you lose very little in the way of features. Cost wise I think it's justified but ASUS's AI Suite I really am not a fan of.

Memory

My first purchase of RGB RAM and I have to say I love it especially with the UI interface for customizing the pattern settings. Price wise I think maybe a littler over the top but wanted it for the build.

Storage

This thing is a beast, fast and seriously large again you are paying for the quality of the SSD and I think this is a solid investment.

Storage

Needed a standard storage drive and the reviews for this were great.

Video Card

This card is amazing however for anything under a midi ATX build triple check the depth of the case when a motherboard is mounted. I had some serious issues with the BitFenix Pandora mATX Tower to the point I got it installed but cannot fit the side panel.

Case

Solid case. Loses a star for the push closed sides which can make cable management super important. Bought mainly for the size and the ICON programmable display. If you are getting a windowed one make sure it says that.

Power Supply

Great PSU, wanted a lower wattage one for this build and it's fantastically quiet.

Keyboard

Little too sensitive for keys as in a light lean from a finger produced characters very quickly. Great keyboard besides that unless you order the wrong language >_>

Headphones

Great quality for the price, comfortable albeit the mic is not great.

This is a very good build to join many many others.

Don't get me wrong there are plenty of good builds but lots of people are spending so much money on really bad PCs. You can spend $2000 on a GTX 1080ti and a i7 7700k but people are spending that instead on Ryzen 5 1500 and GTX 1060s instead.

its 2k because the card doesn't have a price on the site and its about 1.1k so that makes the build 2.9k

Yeah I do appreciate the comment @CGFrog but there are some awesome builds on this site.

First of all I just wanted to say that this thing is beautiful! I love that graphics card, I was looking into getting one but I cant really find anywhere to buy it. Could you give me any info to help me find one?
