Description

(please pardon my broken english)

I used to own a Fractal R5 case, which was quite good, compact, but to small for what I'm planning. I decided to buy a new case, and finally took the Phobya Owl, specifically designed for a watercooling setup.

This computer is used for photography, video editing, rendering and video games.

Specifications:
- 2x22 cores = 44 core / 88 threads @ 2.8ghz (turboboost)
- 8x8 gb of memory = 64 gb of ram
- GTX1070 overclocked
- full SSD storage
- full noctua fans = whisper quiet
- temperature never reach more than 50° for both CPU and GPU
- no leds, no RGB and other kind of rubbishs
- just sauce, raw sauce

Congrats on the feature!

NobleSavage -12 points 12 months ago

I agree completely, this is everything a custom built PC should be, unique, able to do whatever it is needed to do well, absolutely no fluff or tinsel, every component is needed and has not been chosen because 'hurr durr pretty sparkly colours'.

Like any great machine there is no need to embellish, no need to draw attention, no need to illuminate, it's beauty emanates naturally from the excellence in functional engineering and in the informed viewers instant recognition and appreciation of it.

This build exposes the generic brightly coloured, idiot light show builds that parade the same damn components as the unimaginative try hard trash that they are, turds strewn with tinsel to catch the eyes of halfwits with no clue.

This is a PC for men, whereas most on here I am sad to say are very much built for lady-boys.

Wi1dCard 15 points 12 months ago

Hey hey don't be so harsh, people just have different tastes. Making a pc look aesthetically pleasing is an art. Of course it's miserable if you're bad at that art but still.

Wi1dCard 2 points 12 months ago

I bet I could buy all rgb parts and still make it look good. The more components you have, the more work you need to put in to balance the lighting, but my point is having everything rgb doesn't mean that people are aiming to make their build look like unicorn poop. Some people are, but they get tired of it pretty quickly.

Gabiche submitter 5 Builds 4 points 12 months ago

I remember having doing simultaneously 3d rendering (sweet home 3d), video rendering (premiere pro) and photography (DXO Photolabs) without any lags.

hi_im_snowman 3 points 12 months ago

I'm just curious, is it actually necessary to have those 88 threads for that workload or is it just a nice-to-have? 44 cores seems a tad obscene, no? This obliterates what my previous company had as an on-premise server and we we're supporting Active Directory, multiple VMs, a substantial File Server and an application server for shared logistics applications (that are quite demanding) for 25 concurrent users... I mean at some point, there's overkill and then there's Disneyland, no?

Am I missing something? lol

It's a cool build, that's for sure but just curious about some of the reasoning. :)

+1!

Gabiche submitter 5 Builds 5 points 12 months ago

I've been upgrading this computer since one year. Both CPU has been upgraded twice: I used to have a pair of E5-2620V3 (that I got for a dirt cheap), then a pair of E5-2667V3 ES, and finally a pair of E5-2696V4. The pair of E5-2667V3 ES was quite good, but I was hesitating about switching to AMD with the 1950X, a good overclocking and a smaller case. Problem: the resale price of both E5-2667V3 ES and the motherboard was low, so I've been hesitated for some month.

Then, while I was searching some parts on Ebay, I saw the Xeon E5-2696V4 for 1150$. This CPU is exactly the same as the E5-2699 V4, but with 100mhz more in turbo frequency. I finally decided to take a pair of them because: - it's a long-term purchase, so I took the best at the time of purchase. - when using a small amount of core, the frequency is quite good (3,700 MHz 1 core, 3,400 MHz 4 cores, 3,000 MHz 8 core, ,2,800 MHz 22 cores) - I use some softwares that can take advantage of a lot of cores (DXO Photolabs)

(I hope my english is clear enough, I speak natively french)

Mr.Meth 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

In the world of 3D rendering you can never have enough hoarse power. Especially when you work with several different software at the same time. Physically based rendering is the new thing with software like keyshot and substance painter. Keyshot is a cpu based and will use as many core as you can provide it. So if he is 3D rendering allot he can never have enough cpu.

I'm not a huge proponent of flashy rainbow lights or paying for a component just because it has RGB lights, but RGB lights sure does make your system look unique and keeps it from getting boring, if done right. Saying RGBs are useless on a powerful system is like saying body paint is useless on Bugatti Chiron. If you are paying so much on a powerful system, there is nothing wrong to care about aesthetics and make your system stand out.

Great build. Love it.

NobleSavage 1 point 12 months ago

Finally, a PC build that gets it.

No effeminate colour schemes No pointless inane RGB stupidity No ridiculous overpriced egoware

just a cleanly built beast machine that gives zero f***s about looking cool and is 100% designed to do its work effectively and efficiently.

Bravo and may this mark the beginning of the end for the shameful days of form over function and tinsel on turds.

Kace36 2 points 12 months ago

What's so bad about "form"? Yes, it has become common to deck out computers with lights and windows and various other attractions. But, how is that any different than cars or homes or anything else? I mean, after all, you just drive one and live in the other one - why doesn't everyone just have a car that gets them from point A to B? I agree that the function is the most important thing but that doesn't mean it can't look neat. I like all kinds of builds, lights, windows, no lights, no windows, exotic cabling or water pumps, or none of those. I don't see what is so wrong with the aesthetic aspect.

You could even argue that the extensive power of a computer system is itself another status symbol and not really all that necessary. It's just a "computer nerds" version of intellectual aesthetics. I don't mean that in a derogatory way, as I consider myself among that group; I'm just pointing it out to play devil's advocate.

Alfvin 1 point 12 months ago

No effeminate colour schemes

Huh. Now what would be wrong with a little pink involved, I wonder?

Whiteshadow001 1 point 12 months ago

This is a gorgeous build! I mean I love RGB and fancy water loops with clear tubing, but this site is all about creative good looking builds. Even though this isn't a flashy crazy lit up build, it's beautifully crafted, and serves a purpose. I absolutely love this.

Do you find the slow memory affects those CPU's at all? Very nice, super clean. Super jelly.

Gabiche submitter 5 Builds 2 points 12 months ago

Honestly, I can't really answer, because I don't really use software that take advantage of high frequency memory. The high amount of core compensate the slow memory. And as a matter of fact, I have scored 5626 at cinebench.

Sanguedolc3 1 point 12 months ago

The memory was a good choice, seeing how bad the market is on the pricing now, did pretty good in that department.

no ketchup but you have ketchup and mustard cables

enroh 1 point 12 months ago

Drive config isn't great though. Raid10 nvme pcie drives for your os. Raid5 of four drives (one as hot spare) for your scratch drive and then raid 5 of at least four for your storage needs unless you have a nas or San. Good effort though.

LatiosGaming 2 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

I disagree. No matter what price point a build is, the GTX 1070 is a good GPU, and even better overclocked. It could very well be a stand in, we don't know. Obviously OP has money, so he/she probably can afford a Titan V. However, with those Xeons and current GPU prices, any gaming performance increase gained from cards better than a GTX 1070 isn't really worth it. Sure, it would help in the content creation side of things, but as OP said this is also a gaming PC. The most important thing to note is the price does not define a build, the components do. Xeons are usually very expensive, and not one but two twenty-two core CPUs does not help the price.

Gabiche submitter 5 Builds 2 points 12 months ago

I don't really need more than a GTX1070 in my case. In fact, most of the softwares I'm using are mainly cpu dependant. This is why I haven't taken a better gpu. I'm also a casual gamer, and only play @ 1920x1200 / 60fps. A GTX1060 would have been adequate too.

LatiosGaming 2 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

Exactly my thought. My comment was directed toward someone who questioned your choice of the 1070. The point I was making is the Xeons are what made the build expensive, since the person was judging merely off price. Parts define the build, not price points. It also makes sense to play at no more than your settings since twenty-two core CPUs aren't meant for gaming anyway.

Only the GPU can be ovelocked. Both CPU are limited to their frequency (stock : 2.2ghz, 2.8ghz in turboboost for all cores)
