Description

EDIT: FEATURED Holy crap i would have never thought, i was incredibly confused when i woke up to notifications for comments saying "featured" and the first word to come to my mind was "wat" I appreciate all of you enjoying the build and not being abash to ask questions about anything you were wondering about, and i especially appreciate pcpartpicker's staff that has quite grown recently, i remember one of my good friends getting me into custom built pc's in around 2013 at the beginning of my sophomore year after being a Playstation peasant for the longest time (lol), and constantly sending him links and screenshots to parts lists i would put together, and the site has grown incredibly in the past 4 years, and hopefully for many years to come as well.

Hello everyone! Some of you may remember me from my first build ever (and the long winded description), and here I am again a year later armed with new parts, more knowledge, and an itch to scratch.

That itch being a mini-itx build.

There are a few reasons for this, mainly because ill be going to Texas soon for Air Force basic training and I wont be home for more than a year with the training ill receive after basic, so my pc will need to be shipped to me and the massive Enthoo Pro M isn't exactly the smallest case on the market, the second reason being because I wanted the new features and architecture related with Kaby-Lake as my 8350 was starting to age and it was showing. So I sold the computer and had a hard budget of $650 to start, which was achieved with a basic parts list of the CPU, GPU, one stick of RAM, the HDD, case, PSU, and stock intel cooler. I was not happy with the build as it was, however, so I decided some changes were to be made as you'll see in the pictures.

Hope you enjoy :) technically my third build since I changed cases with my first build, benchmarks are average as this is the cheapest RX 480 money could buy, it was a REALLY good deal on newegg so I scooped it up as soon as I could

Temperatures are quite good with the Kraken G10 installed, 54c on the 480 flatlined after 30 minutes of valley bench with MSI afterburner open for monitoring. CPU tops out at about 40c.

If you have any questions ill certainly answer every one in the comments section, it just may not be that second; so don't hesitate to ask and have a fantastic day/night everyone :)

Fade to black... Metallica song... instant +1

PhuchopH 10 points 14 months ago

I don't know what I like more, this build or these comments. As a metalhead, I get all warm and fuzzy inside when I see people talking about metal in unexpected places.

LostElement 4 Builds 6 points 14 months ago

Brutal.

4Shadow 1 Build 4 points 13 months ago

As a fellow Metalhead, I can confirm this warm and fuzzy feeling.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 3 points 14 months ago

;)

bloodroses75 1 Build 3 points 14 months ago

Same with the Megadeth reference with your avatar picture LostElement. :)

I bet a computer based on a Slayer song name would be wicked... Raining Blood, etc... lol

LostElement 4 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Lol.

It wasn't initially referenced to good ol Megadeth, I am just a science nerd :P

However, Megadeth is still great. Their Super Collider album was... okay.

bloodroses75 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

I didn't think it was that bad either. It definitely wasn't up to Megadeth's usual quality or style. Risk was the same way; although worse...lol. Dave Mustaine even said that if Risk was anything but a Megadeth album, it would have gotten more favorable reviews. I Think Super Collider is the same way. I didn't like the first half of the album, but the second half was actually pretty good (tracks 6 on). It definitely didn't sound like typical Megadeth though.

HarvesterofSorrow 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

super collider was... not that great.

LostElement 4 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Yeah, it was okay. I only liked three songs. the rest were either meh or bad.

HarvesterofSorrow 1 Build 3 points 14 months ago

Yeah, but i would still much rather listen to Rust in peace, peace sells, or countdown to extinction.

jj0322 2 points 14 months ago

Blood red, 213, SS-3, disciple, and spirit in black would all be great names.

Nuka_Cola 4 points 14 months ago

Are you the one person on PcPartPicker who answers peoples questions?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Possibly ;)

AverageGangMember 1 Build 4 points 14 months ago

This build proves low end can be featured.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

It sure does! I couldnt be happier

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I'd really only consider the pentium to be low end, popping in an i5 would insta promote this to upper medium

toastythomas 5 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Mine was only around $250 and got it. I've seen one with a price of almost $0 get it too.

Mr_Sketer 3 points 14 months ago

i like it. I haven't seen the Kraken G10 before, and it seem like an awesome product.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

oh it works incredibly well, I would recommend to anyone who is comfortable modifying their electronics

Venenosa 1 Build 3 points 14 months ago

I didn't know something like the Kraken G10 even existed! Just from seeing it in you build I started looking into it, did you test the temps with the original cooling the card had, or did you just install the G10 immediately? Also, from some videos I saw of the G10, the GPU did not have the backplate? How did you put it anyway? Sorry, I'm just very intrigued by this whole cooler thing haha, great build, love the all black look, looks top +1

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

I actually replied somewhere else about the G10, and dont worry i was quite excited when i remembered that they existed lmao, theyve been out for a few years now; and yes i did to temps! 81c average while playing doom on the default fan curve, and it sounds like a jet engine lol. So with the G10, theres a little backplate that comes with the bracket that bolts on to the back of the card via some long screws and a washer and nut, however i noticed that my backplate that came on the card actually had the same holes through it to hold on the air cooler, so i just stuck the screws through and held them with my thumb so they wouldnt spin while i was bolting down the cooler. Its a very simple process and it shouldnt take longer than like 20 minutes tops, but on the RX cards you will want to purchase packs of small heatsinks to put on the VRM modules and VGA memory modules, as they will no longer have active cooling on them with the stock air cooler off, i had to do some extensive research on the G10 actually working with the 480 period but it seems to do fine for me :) also thank you! I think its dead sexy myself lol

milessweet418 3 points 14 months ago

I really like this. Comes to show you don't need to spend a large amount of money to get a feature :D PLOUSSSSS WUNNN

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

BUDGET FEATURE POWAAAAA

Drokovian 2 points 14 months ago

Wouldn't the Fractal Design Define Mini C have been a far better choice of a case? There seems to be an awful lot of free space/no PSU shroud in it even after putting all your parts in.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

The Mini C is a larger case and would increase shipping costs accordingly, I had some buyers remorse after build and seeing the mini c come out because micro ATX is a much cheaper form factor and the mini c is dead sexy, but I'm pretty secure about my purchases now.

Magmattero 2 points 14 months ago

Why did you get a g4600 instead of a g4560?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

The g4560 was out of stock at the time, and the performance boost to the 4600 was justifiable

Magmattero 2 points 14 months ago

Ohhh.

gugu96 19 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

super clean build, I wish I would be that good

joshzpants 3 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Cool build, I love seeing the nano s. I was wondering about the fan hub, can you control each fan's rpm? I need to buy one soon and it looks like the only one that can do that is the nzxt grid+ 2.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Yeah this hub doesn't allow you to control individual speeds, I wish I would've gotten the Grid to be completely honest, and thank you :)

crich88848 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

Are you sure they are going to allow you to have a PC in AIT? Not sure how the Air Force works, but in the Army this would've been a no go in AIT.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

we have technical school, air force doesn't participate in any advanced infantry training as far as I know, except for maybe the CCT guys, but yeah a lot of my buddies had theirs in tech so its no biggie

crich88848 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

AIT stands for "advanced individual training." Everyone in the Army goes to AIT regardless of their MOS, just different schools in different locations. My AIT was at Aberdeen Proving Grounds right outside of Baltimore. I just wasn't sure how the Air Force was with their training and the freedom given. We still had Drill Sergeants in AIT, and for me I think my Drill Sergeants in AIT were harder than in BCT. Anyways, nice build and good luck in the Air Force. Thank you for you service!

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Well the more ya know, thanks for the information :) i appreciate it bro, good luck to ya too

jeefbeef 2 points 14 months ago

I like the mini ITX form factor and the budget conscious nature of your build - that's some epic 1080p capable performance in a small black box!

Would you be looking to put in an SSD in the future? That 5400rpm HDD would be giving you some sllloowwwwww boot and load times

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Thank you! Actually the intellipower drives dynamically spin up or down during certain times so boot times are about 10-12 seconds and i was pretty impressed with that, but yes an SSD is in order with an i5-7500

Eltech 19 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Congrats for feature spotlight. Your build looks great.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Thank you so much! I woke up and saw the notifications about being featured and was kinda like "wat"

NemesisRsx 2 points 14 months ago

Good job on the build! I've been in the Air Force for a while now, starting second enlistment, and just stepped into the computer world 2 weeks ago. I should start and finish my build sometime next week with the same intentions as yourself, portability(Mini C though). Your budget, build and size is well executed. You should include some benchmarks for other people wanting to do a similar build.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

I appreciate it man, as do i appreciate your service :) that build should suit you very well even in the mini c since you have a few more options for transport, good luck on your second term!

redclaw 2 points 14 months ago

How happy are you with that GPU? I'm going to get a Rx 480 pretty soon probably. I saw it didn't have terribly high reviews on Newegg, but Newegg doesn't always have accurate reviews...

Titan8881 4 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Might as well get the 580 if you are in that price range since it is basically a better 480.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

This ^

redclaw 1 point 13 months ago

Yeah, I've been trying to find a 480 for $150-160 without a rebate for about a month now, with no luck, so I'll probably end up just getting a 580...

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

This video card in particular im not super impressed with, i would recommend an 8gb model, as Ghost Recon Wildlands requires more than 4 gigs for ultra textures, but it has served me incredibly well so far.

DawnoftheDave 3 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

That itch is only going to get worse. I started off with a Nano S and I've just been building in smaller and smaller cases. Great Build! +1

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Oh Lord the control it took to not buy a Node 202, hint hint lol

DawnoftheDave 3 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Same here! Silverstone SG13 is only $39.99 on amazon and its a great case. give it a look. its also my most recent build.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

I.... may... do some.. research on that pricing

SirMrGuyHuman 2 points 14 months ago

when you liquid cool your gpu on a pentium...... I kinda wanna try that, how does it perform in gaming?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

I liquid cooled the gpu because the gpu isnt a pentium ;) i have plans to upgrade to an i5-7500 so dont worry the air cooler will have its purpose as well, and the kraken has given me no issues keeps the 480 incredibly tame under stress testing for 30 minutes or so

aprofile 3 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Nice build. How was installing the g10? Did you have to make sure it was compatible first because I'm thinking of doing the same thing with a 470 but am unsure if it will be compatible.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Yes i did a lot of searching around, as long as the card isnt a reference model youll have no issues whatsoever, good luck on it :)

aprofile 3 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Thanks. I have my exams in a few weeks so I might get myself a present after them :)

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Just remember that you'll need the packs of heatsinks listed, any will do; it just so happens that the ones I got were in black.

aprofile 3 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Ok. Thanks. I'll be sure to pick some up when I give it a go. Do you know if it voids the warranty?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Uhh, check into that for me will ya? lol

No seriously though as far as I know with this particular card, I didn't break any warranty stickers so I think you should be alright as long as you reassemble the air cooler correctly when you RMA if you need to for some unfortunate reason. I believe you would only void RMA guidelines if the card was damaged BECAUSE you broke it while installing the cooler, or it went out because the cooler was installed on it.

hatemylife 2 points 14 months ago

would you recommend this mobo? Is the bios easy to understand? has it crapped out at all? are there enough plugins for what you need? I was planning on looking at this mobo, but im a little reluctant to use it in a build because it's a cheap price. and idk if it would work very well.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Yes, i am VERY happy with this motherboard, onboard wifi is fantastic, connectivity is above average for a Mini-ITX board, and the layout for all the connections makes sense while building. The BIOS is easy to navigate with some looking around, the first basic menu is more or less for monitoring and basic profile changing, but there is an advanced mode that gives incredible features and control for a non-Z270 bios.

xTHExRADxREXx 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

this build looks really cool and is dope

Congrats on the feature
Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago
Thank you!
Acostadude 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

What games you playing??? Good CPU/GPU combo???

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Overwatch at ultra locked 60 fps, R6S at very high 50-70 fps depending on the map, Wildlands runs between 31-70 fps on very high, Arma 3 runs at almost ultra between 49-69 fps in single player tanoa missions, Doom runs at ultra at 120 fps or more. Just a few examples

Acostadude 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Wow, that's great, love your build!!!

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Thank you!

EdInk 11 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Interesting setup with the CPU cooler and the rad. Very clever +1

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Thank you! i clenched pretty hard when i stuck the cooler in and it wouldnt line up with the cpu at first lol

EdInk 11 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

What? Your butt cheeks?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

My Wallet. And my butt cheeks.

Vairfoley 19 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

This might get lost in the comments but congrats on the budget build feature. You totally deserve it. +1

Also, thank you for your service.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Of course kind words wont get lost :)

pgaytan 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

~I SEE A RED RIG AND I WANT TO PAINT IT BLACK~

Boith 3 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

I can definitely see why this is featured. The cleanliness and compactness of it all satisfies me to death. Good job!

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Thank you!

slime4frog 2 points 13 months ago

I've been thinking about making an all black build for a while and I think I just might after looking at this. You did this the right way and it looks sick.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Thank you! The only thing i would recommend changing is getting different memory and perhaps an SSD instead of an HDD just to top off the black asthetic, best of luck to you with your build!

Storm-cooled 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

The only thing this build is missing is periods.

hehe, joking aside- very impressive build. +1

Also- TEXAS YEEEEA BOY! Welcome to the lone star state whenever you get here :D

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

YEE YEE, as a multi-firearm owner, and an Amurican, im pretty excited lmao

Kenjionigod 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Never thought I'd see a Pentium based build featured, congrats.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Theres been a few, more particularly the "Micro Meme Machine," one of my personal favorite builds on pcpartpicker, thank you though! :)

DisguiseWS 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Refreshing to see a build that's not lit up like a christmas tree, really slick!

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Yeah i myself got kinda sick of that style, im kind of considering selling my STRAFE and Katar for some logitech peripherals that arent quite as red and "gamery"

DisguiseWS 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I just use my regular office-style Logitech keyboard and MX master mouse for gaming. Never got the whole rage about more DPI and color-coded RGB keys, when you have your eyes glued to the screen anyways. But then, I use my machine for work first, and gaming second.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

fair enough, I'm thinking about an Atlas spectrum or something of that sort that's more comfortable and has RGB so I can use white lighting if I so choose, and I definitely need a Logitech mouse as the katar is tiny and gives me carpal tunnel if I don't take a break and use my xbox controller every now and then.

DisguiseWS 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

There's tons of good options out there, I'm sure you'll be able to find something that is comfortable and aesthetically pleasing at the same time

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I hope so!

FACUNDO 13 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Not every featured build has to be a high end one! :') +1

PhilMore 2 points 13 months ago

I see your computer build and I want to paint it black...

I know its not the right song, but still fits. Nicely done, holy moly it's so CLEAN!

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Right? Lmao

Jackdadog888 3 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Nice Build! +1 You should remove that hard drive sticker or somehow "dbrand" it.

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I think this particular sticker voids the warranty :(

Yahtadi 2 points 13 months ago

Effiecient cooling system

Everbeing 2 points 13 months ago

Doesn't this introduce CPU bottlenecking?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Sure doesnt :)

Rexper 1 point 13 months ago

CPU bottlenecking will be present in every build at times.

Tooth 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

congrats!!

Black and white pictures would have been perfect :)

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I tried em and they honestly didnt have the desired effect so i left em out. This time.

deleteundobackspace 2 points 13 months ago

shitttt...that looks cool. very very cool. how about vrm temperature? the vrm is on the other side of the kraken g10 right? planning to the same thing but worried about the vrm

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

They stay well within the 100c danger zone under load for about 30 minutes

+1 for the Metallica title

and sick build

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Thank you!

Lyrix 1 point 14 months ago

I like it! 99th upvote! looks really cool! why arent you taking the rad as an intake???

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Thank you! The short answer to that would be that a hot radiator intaking air through the front results in hotter air circulating through the case and isn't great for the air cooled components.

andlaw 3 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

after the 30k room feature we have another adding tax & shipping into the parts list? smh...

who selects these?? on a positive note.. +1 for the cable management, question tho.. why mount the fan hub in the front instead of the back if a clean minimal look was the goal~

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Yes i added tax and shipping into the parts list because its something i actually had to buy to get the computer parts to my doorstep in the first place, and im assuming PCpartpicker staff does :) The fan cables werent long enough on the pump and Kraken G10 fan.

andlaw 3 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

hehe pretty sure we all had shipping costs to get our PCs built.

BTW, fan PWM extensions would be something to look into.. Silverstone make them among other brands, which will allow you to hide that hub.. just a thought. pretty cheap too~

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Yeah the Nano S actually comes with a splitter extension so i ended up using that to connect them behind the tray :), i also looked at putting the hub behind the panel but if i remember correctly there was baaaarely not enough clearance on top of the cables not reaching where it would have needed to be placed.

M9 Black fade 13k current offer

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

13k what

Deefrost 1 point 13 months ago

hmmmm good question

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Hey guys just a little "benchmark" update, I was modding fallout 3 earlier, and with about 9 gigs of tabs and program windows open at once, with about 17 files downloading, installing, and loading; the little g4600 didn't even flinch and put solid performance and responsiveness out while switching between tabs and windows and drop menus and right clicks and game launches. So I can safely say that for medium-heavy desktop use, you will have very little issue doing so, just for those interested :)

22BusDrivers 1 point 7 months ago

how many and what size fan spots (not the right word) are there?

Vance_Anderson 1 point 1 month ago

No, it's "WOT" not "wat"

WiteX7 1 point 15 days ago

Is there about 1mm of clearance left from the Radiator+Fan and the back of the Cryorig H7?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 15 days ago

Something like that yes lmao, its a pretty tight fit but a fit nonetheless, probably closer to 2mm if I had to guess.

WiteX7 1 point 12 days ago

Thanks! I was thinking of doing the same build but with the EVGA Hyrbid Cards. Very inspiring build!

Sprint_97 -2 points 14 months ago

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Neither does the RX 480?

eopest 8 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

but isn't the cpu exhausting straight into the gpu rad?

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

It is, but its not a huge deal with the low power consumption and the cool air passing through

[comment deleted by staff]
Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Oopsies on the first comment, the radiator that you're asking about is an AIO on my RX 480 that i installed using the kraken G10 bracket from NZXT, you install the bracket on your video card and it allows you to mount an Asetek compatible liquid cooler of any kind to you video card, it takes about 15 minutes if you know what youre doing beforehand and follow instructions.

[comment deleted by staff]
DisguiseWS 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I can't comment directly for the 6400, but I have the 6500. And that chip is more than capable to do some serious multitasking, like having Illustrator, R, several large excel sheets and a dozen different pdfs and other files open, while streaming audio, and having that all happen on 2 screens. But I do have a dedicated GPU, which takes some of the heavy lifting of the CPU (mostly video decoding, and driving the 2 screens).

[comment deleted by staff]
DisguiseWS 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

that 7500 should enable you to do everything your heart desires. Going quad over dual core is the main reason for me to work on a desktop

Ayrus submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

well I'm glad I could help in your decision :) Multitasking is not an issue at all with this chip with 7th gen architecture backing up the per thread performance, which is different than multi-core because each thread is handling its own tasks (theres some other kaby-lake technologies stuff going on as well to aid even more), not several threads working on the same task, ive had no issues performing similar tasks to what youre talking about doing, however I would recommend an upgrade to an i5 when you can just for peace of mind for future proofing.
