Description

First build ever, took me forever to assemble but everything worked on the first try so I'm very proud! Used to have my surface pro 4 plugged through HDMI to a 720 tv all the time, I don't watch cable and my entertainment comes from internet videos, youtube, Netflix etc.. or console gaming girlfriend needed a PC since hers got stolen and I was looking to by a surface for her and while searching for a used one, noticed i had some money to spare and it hit me... its time!

Like I said, it was my first build and I was waiting for Black Friday so in the meantime did tons of research as my knowledge about PC hardware was lacking a lot, everything I bought usually where laptops! and commercial PCs, the initial budget was supposed to be around $1,600 max for the PC.. BUT.. the more research .. the more sales I saw... the greedier I got and I'm sure many understand... I blame psychology and my damn brain. 30 bucks for a ssd with double the storage? Meh 1,530 won't hurt.. Then 40 extra for tempered glass.. Hmm spending that much I should go for a decent case.. Beside 1,570 is no big deal.. 3 hours later.. Well.. If. I'm spending 2,600 on a ultra pc.. It deserves a decent monitor.. Otherwise it's a waste of hardware if it can't show it.. 1,300 monitor? Ahh f**** it.. Then comes the heavy existential reasoning.. I deserve to enjoy life.. I could die in a month.. You live only once.. Etc.. Lol

Everything was bought during Black Friday week so the price here is not accurate, it does help a lot to be patient and wait it out for Black Friday deals especially since its a new build and small savings on every part ( $20 here.. $50 there etc..) added up and after comparing the total now vs what I actually paid, I saved between sales and amazon prime free shipping about $700.

The jump from console to PC is truly amazing, although the jump from 720 to 2k 3440x1440 120fps also helps LOL. The monitor is spectacular! And while looking for some speakers got Bose Soundtouch 300 sound bar for Christmas and the sound is badass!

So far I'm very happy, very proud.. all worth it and learning more and more every day!

***About the desk LOL: I'm on the lookout for one but it wasn't a priority until the soundbar showed up... but ill probably get one soon, the thing is if I start my medical residency and have to move then it will be a pain to move the desk and everything. Like I said. It was supposed to be a$1,500 build.. Never expected to end up with ultra wide monitor and a meter long soundbar!

Part Reviews

CPU

Works as intended, don't plan to overclock or anything so i got the non K version, plus I'm no programmer or heavy software user. Its enough for my gaming needs and Internet entertainment.

CPU Cooler

Keeps CPU pretty cool on stress it barely made it to 78C, so it does its job! Easy to install!

Motherboard

Has everything I need, supports all my hardware and no issues whatsoever!

Memory

Its RAM, its pretty fast for my needs, its cool looking and works with ASUS Aura!

Storage

My main SSD, Desktop, up and running in seconds! Fast though not cheap!

Storage

The second SSD for my gaming needs, here are all the Steam games installed, decent space, very fast, never had an issue, games work perfectly!

Storage

Backup HHD, just for data, pictures and all the good stuff that doesnt need super fast access, still pretty fast, cheap and great space!

Video Card

A beast, run my games on my 3440x1440 21:9 G-Sync Alienware monitor at 120FPS on ultra settings, flawlessly!

Case

My first build was in this case.. super easy to install everything. If only it had USB 3.1 or thunderbolts up front!

Super quiet fans!

The case looks badass!

Had an issue with the tempered glass bursting in my hand " spontaneous glass breakage" Amazon just sent me a replacement case!

Power Supply

It works, power to spare and easy to use!

Operating System

well.. its windows soo.. not much to say!

Monitor

This is just spectacular! Had my concerns with Ultrawide screens vs going for 4k Tv. But wanted to take advantage of those 120hz and Gsync so went for it... no regrets, everyone that lays eyes on it loves it!

Got lucky i assume as backlight bleed is very minimal on the corners. Overclocked in a few easy button presses and my games on Ultra at 120FPS without a single Hiccup!

the issue? price! really pissed me off that other monitors with similar specs are way cheaper just cause they have AMD Freesync...

Keyboard

Always used the chiclet-style keyboards from the surface and was hesitant to go with these mechanical ones... again, no regret.

love the look, works great, love the RBG customization and the many M keys and volume wheel etc.. it has everything I wanted!

Mouse

Wireless and fast response .. all I wanted but of course had to pay for it!

very comfortable, added all side buttons and customized them for my needs! Love it!

Headphones

Hear every footstep, comfortable, although the earmuff does feel weird after an extended period of use! The sound is great and nice bass!

UPS

Have to protect my hardware! Hardware safe!

Other

They work... phanteks mentions its ASUS aura sync compatible and bla bla.. but didnt include the RGB adapter for the MOBO..???

the tape sucks!

Other

why wasn't this included in my "ASUS aura compatible strip or case?

after installing it, if I choose a different color than the MOBO RGBs or lower the brightness/intensity .. something starts making coil whine.. so uninstalled it, left it with the case since the actual blue color that I use its the same as the rest of the parts.

Other

From my PS4, they work on steam without issue!

Other

Feels good.. big enough and looks good!

Other

Just what I needed to complement the beautiful screen and flawless graphics... some damn fine audio!

I would recommend the Ikea Bekant desk, its awesome and pretty cheap. Although not sure where you live. Its only £130 in the UK and has plenty of space and good legs!

erp987 submitter 1 Build 2 points 23 days ago

Thank you.. I'm on the lookout for one.. Since I never imagined I would end with ultra wide monitor and a meter long soundbar lol

Velocitron2000 1 point 12 days ago

Awesome build! I recently got the 63" Birch Bekant desk, looks great, very sturdy, easy to setup and decent cable management. Works well.

Quick question though; I just bought the EVGA CLC 280 and got the Flow Control software. I notice the custom fan curves don't seem to be working. Also LED TEMP crashes immediately, CPU temp isn't displayed but it shows up under the HW MONITORING tab. How's it working for you?

erp987 submitter 1 Build 2 points 2 days ago

sorry for late response..i dont have the flow control software.. ASUS Mother board takes care of every fan i have as i have then plugged PMW Hub.

everything works smooth and quiet!

Velocitron2000 1 point 1 day ago

Ahh, I gotcha, thanks for the input.

Kyojin93 1 point 24 days ago

Nice build. I think you can greatly improve cable management. I personally use tons of velcro straps. Check these videos, they might help.

Btw nice Full Metal Alchemist gadgets.

erp987 submitter 1 Build 1 point 24 days ago

thanks for the links.. they will be useful once I get my final desk, which is the reason why cable management sucks... It's not even my final form!

And yes GF got me the Elrics and watch... love the Alfonse!

SirHalpin 1 Build 1 point 23 days ago

I think "greatly" is a bit of a stretch

gromitbear91 1 Build 1 point 24 days ago

I like how you have dropped over 5k into a computer setup but still have a small crappy desk hahaha. its awesome.

erp987 submitter 1 Build 2 points 24 days ago

LOL it's not even my desk, I'm on the lookout for one and it wasn't a priority until the soundbar showed up...

But ill probably get one soon, the thing is if I start my medical residency and have to move then it will be a pain to move the desk and everything!

gromitbear91 1 Build 1 point 17 days ago

aaah. makes sense

Scary_Terry 1 Build 1 point 24 days ago

Great build with some nice quality parts bro! Glad you were able to find some Black Friday deals also. I would however invest in a larger desk if you can. I was using a small student desk for quite some time, it wasn't until recently that I finally got a nice large Ikea desk. Trust me it makes a huge difference!

erp987 submitter 1 Build 1 point 24 days ago

I'm on the lookout for one but it wasn't a priority until the soundbar showed up... but ill probably get one soon, the thing is if I start my medical residency and have to move then it will be a pain to move the desk and everything!

Scary_Terry 1 Build 1 point 24 days ago

Yeah moving everything would definitely suck lol. I would wait until you know if you're going to be moving or not before investing. Btw what specialty are you pursuing in the medical field?

erp987 submitter 1 Build 1 point 23 days ago

Psychiatry!

That'd the idea!

~spends $5300 ~ lol

erp987 submitter 1 Build 3 points 23 days ago

Yeah.. Dammit... It's just that research messes with my. Mind.. And of course psychology.. 30 bucks for a ssd with double the storage etc.. Meh 1,530 won't hurt.. Then 40 extra for tempered glass.. SirHalpin 1 Build 1 point 23 days ago

I'm the same way man, I'm only teasing. My first build started like this and I'm currently running this, and I have all the parts for this except the motherboard, I'm still deciding. I 100% understand how quickly getting the best and most attractive parts can add up quickly.

JACKRABYT 1 Build 1 point 23 days ago

Truly an awesome build however, I would invest in a bigger desk to fit all that expensive awesomeness.

Why No k????!!!!! I'm cringing so hard

Wolf88 4 Builds 2 points 24 days ago

Looks like you'll have to live vicariously through someone else.

CSB0518 1 Build 2 points 24 days ago

Cringing at a non k cpu? I think you need to get your cringe priorities straight.

erp987 submitter 1 Build 1 point 24 days ago

couldn't find one.. suddenly newegg had a few of these soo had to react quick and like i said, i dont think ill need to overclock anything.. I dont make games nor use heavy software, so it would be overkill!

I can run Assasins Creed Ultra setting and the CPU is there just chilling!

Shakaron 4 Builds 1 point 23 days ago

I agree with you.

Spending $5000 on a PC and not going for a CPU that supports overclocking just feels wrong.

I also understand that people don't want to overclock, but it still feels wrong not to utilize the "free" 25% speed boost. (Especially since the motherboard and CPU cooler both support CPU overclocking.)

Fraglepuss 2 Builds 1 point 23 days ago

The i7 8700 turbos to 4.6ghz on all cores when cooled properly (in this build it absolutely is), and the k version can normally only reach 5.2ghz max. So best case scenario 13% increase. But most people only reach 5.0ghz so only about 8% more performance. Also at 1440p ultrawide this will not make an impact AT ALL because the gpu is the limiting factor.

I support his choice. Cheaper, cooler and hugely powerful. The i7 is clocked so high that this is irrelevant

Shakaron 4 Builds 1 point 22 days ago

I don't buy CPUs every time a new technology is released. However, I've overclocked both of my CPUs I've used in the last 5 years. One from 3.2 GHz to 4.0 GHz the other from 3.4 GHz (3.8 GHz Turbo) to 4.8 GHz.

I'm pretty sure overclocking done properly would not stop at 5.0 GHz or not ever 5.2 GHz on the i7-8700K chip. Please mind, my first CPU (from 3.2 GHz to 4.0 GHz) had a TDP of 136 W.

Also at 1440p ultrawide this will not make an impact AT ALL because the gpu is the limiting factor.

Right now it may very well be the case. But what about years later? One might need a CPU upgrade. If you got the unlocked version giving you more power (again, I'm pretty sure 5.2 GHz is not the top one can achieve) then you can keep using your current CPU/motherboard/RAM combo for another generation or two, that you would be able to do with the locked version.

It is not uncommon that a new generation of CPU needs a new motherboard (and/or RAM type).

I support his choice. Cheaper, cooler and hugely powerful. The i7 is clocked so high that this is irrelevant

Yes, the locked version is cheaper and cooler. However, I disagree that the performance difference is not irrelevant (again, I don't believe the 5.0 GHz and 5.2 GHz limits are accurate with proper cooling). Holding on to your motherboard/CPU/RAM set and upgrading less frequently can save you money on the long run.

Fraglepuss 2 Builds 1 point 22 days ago

I do agree with some of your points, and I don't think that a 8700k is a bad choice. I simply think that the i7 has a really high boost clock which is only around 10% of its max OC. For 1440p gaming I think it will take many years for a gpu to reach this chips bottle neck.

Again both are great, but chips at 5.2ghz are more suited to 240fps at 1080p, not ~90fps widescreen playing. There's nothing wrong with a slightly more powerful cpu, but this 12 threaded 4.6ghz cpu will last for MANY years, and the gaming bottleneck in this system is actually the 1080ti.

Shakaron 4 Builds 2 points 20 days ago

I simply think that the i7 has a really high boost clock

Absolutely.

For 1440p gaming I think it will take many years for a gpu to reach this chips bottle neck.

Probably you are right about that too. :)

erp987 submitter 1 Build 1 point 22 days ago

my point exactly..and probably by that time i would probably end up updating my build with a better monitor.. better GPU and better CPU!

SirHalpin 1 Build 1 point 23 days ago

I'm not sure why the word free is even in there, K version sells for $50 more for a reason

Shakaron 4 Builds 2 points 22 days ago

What I meant is overclocking is free of charge, especially if you buy a nice CPU cooler and a motherboard that supports overclocking anyway. Of course, the unlocked CPU costs more, but also perform way better than the locked version.

SirHalpin 1 Build 1 point 22 days ago

Fair

erp987 submitter 1 Build 1 point 23 days ago

everybody keeps forgetting the part where I said. "couldn't find a K version" everything is out of stock.. {newegg and amazon} suddenly got an email from the site the non K was available and on sale.. thus had to make a quick choice " wait for a K version whenever one shows up and I'm quick/ lucky enough to get or take advantage of the one I have right now and grab it, which i did and sure enough .. 30 minutes later. again out of stock!

This is the only part I bought BEFORE black Friday ( about 2 weeks early) cause i knew that its rarely on stock, and even still, I had it unopened just in case a K version popped up.. and i just return/sell the other one.. but a month later, the last part of my build arrived and as you can imagine, there's no way I was gonna let every part there sit until I find a K version!

By that time I already knew that I had enough CPU power for my build and that the overclocked feature is not a deal breaker since I do not do video editing, streaming or any heavy computing where the CPU would be my limiting factor! I just play games and watch Netflix, and not even competitive.. I just sit my *** and play Witcher 3, assassins creed or even Hollow knight LOL

I'm new to this but everywhere I looked it clearly said: save $ on CPU.. so that you can go all in on GPU as gaming is the priority! even builds suggested to get the i5 that was supposed to be plenty of power.

everything i have.. runs flawlessly.. the only time I've seen the CPU go above 50C and the fans start to make noise.. was during a CPU stress test... CPU is always there chilling there while i play games... And if I'm able to play the newest AAA on ultra settings, 120fps (which is limited only by the monitor cause even my GPU goes above that and i have to cap it on steam.) I don't think I made a mistake!

*** just ran the benchmark of assassins creed. result = Very High on ultra settings of course even on my 3440x1440 screen! new image above!

Shakaron 4 Builds 2 points 22 days ago

I don't mean you made a mistake. Everyone has different priorities and needs.

I would have waited for an unlocked CPU. Why? Because the price difference would allow me to boost the CPU's performance and I could prolong hardware upgrade with 1-2 years just with that (since overclocking can yield you enough performance boost that would match the next generation locked CPUs or even one generation after that). Please keep in mind that next generation CPUs might very well require new motherboard (or even new memory modules).

So that's why I go for overclocking, whenever I can. That's why I would suggest everyone to do the same.

SirHalpin 1 Build 1 point 22 days ago

Yeah I don't think either of us were disagreeing with you, this is a perfectly good and powerful build and you should be proud! I just think Shakaron and I are both in the same camp where we would have waited for the K version. Which I did, and it feels so good to finally have it. But you don't need to justify yourself to us man this is a sick build, they sell the non-K version for a reason, and as people have said above, the performance gained is marginal. Power to you!
