Description

Gaming / Work Rig

Lets start with the case, the Fractal Design Define S is the nicest case I have worked with. Everything fitted with ease. It's well built with solid materials and feels like a £100 + case.

Power supply is great, comes well packed and is fully modular, plenty of cables and the silent running (fan doesn't spin up unless under heavy load) is great!

Intel core i5 6600k chip, very nice and fast, haven't oc'd it yet but will have a play soon enough.

Noctua cooler is a nice beast, very very very quiet and easy to install, comes with some high grade thermal paste and brackets for the intel socket and AMD socket motherboards.

Gigabyte Gaming 5 mobo was nice an easy to install with a superb manual.

Corsair Vengeance RAM is nice and fast, easy to install and low profile so sits under then fan real easy, good price point too!

Hard drives... the Samsung m.2 drive... al i can say is WOW!!! boots up super fast and file transfers are done in the blink of an eye. Samsung Evo 850 SSD is also nice and fast, where my games are stored. 1 tb Western Digital black for storage.

Wasn't going to buy a GFX card until the new ones drop but found a GTX 970 for £200. This will do as a placeholder, will mean i dont need to rush out and buy a new GPU straightaway.

Windows, monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse from previous build.

Once the new GPU's drop I will be looking to get a couple of 27" monitors and a new mouse (don't like the scroll wheel on this logitech!)

This build is almost silent, have to put ear to the case to hear even the faintest fan whirr!

Update 1: I have now added a 2tb western digital blue for media storage, my DAS box is now the noisiest thing in the room and its annoying me (old pc used to drown it out), on the look out for a quiet DAS/NAS box

Part Reviews

CPU

Very quick and easy to overclock

CPU Cooler

Super quiet and easy to install, comes with extra brackets for intel and AMD, good quality thermal paste included to boot.

Motherboard

Smart mobo, easy to use and a good bios, the app center is brilliant for accessing the BIOS from windows!

Memory

Quick! low profile too so fits until the cpu cooler with ease.

Storage

Amazingly fast, boots up in seconds and file transfer speeds are almost instant!

Storage

Nice and quick, good for game intalls

Storage

Very quite and quicker than I expected at the spin speed, perfect for my needs as media streaming storage.

Storage

Good solid storage with nice read and write times

Video Card

I grabbed a bargain here, it plays Fallout 4 (the most taxing game I currently own) on ULTRA settings, it's like I was playing the game with one eye closed before. Amazing!

Case

Best case I have every used, solid materials means its well built, fans are silent and sound proofing is good, has filters in front and underneath (they slide out for easy cleaning).

cable management is easy too. Case feels like it should be £100+

Power Supply

Great PSU, fully modular, loads of cables.

The silent running is a god send! The fan doesn't spin up when under low/medium power consumption, only when it hits high will the fan turn on, even then is hardly noticeable.

Operating System

Free!

Monitor

Nice colours and looks smart.

Keyboard

macro keys are annoying, takes a bit of getting used too, not a bad keyboard but probably better out there.

Mouse

Good solid feel but it is a bit heavier than other solid mice.

The scroll wheel is horrible and has a few bugs with the software

Speakers

Good cheap speakers that do the job

I took my time deliberating and researching each component...that's just as much fun as using the computer! the trill of the chase...

I will enjoy, thank you

The samsung evo? it is very fast but the m.2 drive is just WOW even in comparison to the SSD.

I'm contemplating getting another m.2 drive but bigger, the mobo can support two of them apparently but I cant find the second connector.
