This is my first build after years of owning only laptops for productivity/interneting and consoles for gaming. Decided to go big, and holy balls, I wish I had done this sooner! This build took a long time to gather parts for and I had to RMA the GPU but I'm happy with the result. Totally new to this so any feedback is appreciated :)
The ASRock Taichi had everything I needed and more, and everything installed easily onto it. Getting RAM up to advertised speed was simple and storage drives were instantly recognized. The BIOS is extensive but easy to navigate and needed no update. No complaints here. Some fan headers are smack in the middle of the board, might be annoying for some, but I'm not using these anyways.
Went with an i7-8700K as my main aim is gaming, but it can also easily handle my multi-tasking needs. Overclocked to a stable 4.7Ghz and then 5.0Ghz pretty easily with slight voltage offsets, and is running fairly cool thanks to the...
NZXT Kraken x62 keeps the processor around 35C at idle and around 60C at load (max so far is low 80's) and it looks noice. I replaced the stock fans with Corsair ML 140's and they are rather silent. The radiator fits the case perfectly and RAM clearance doesn't look like it will be an issue even if the remaining slots are occupied. Rad.
The first FTW3 1080 Ti I received was a dud. At stock it threw trippy purple artifacts on screen a few seconds into every benchmark although temps were fine, and constantly blue-screened. After a day or two of struggling it kicked the bucket entirely and the PC refused to boot at all, with the motherboard debug code pointing to a vague PCIE issue. Might have been an unstable factory clock, I dunno. The EVGA RMA process was easy despite my impatience, and the replacement seems solid so far. At load it maxes around 60C without much noise. Still haven't messed with the overclock on the card, but even at stock it's pretty dope.
It's RAM, it's a lot of RAM, and it's pretty. Bought it just before the Pro version was announced, sadly, but I think the only difference is that the new ones are even prettier. It's fine.
More power than I'll likely need, but it's modular, the cables are all sleeved white which matched the color scheme, and it came with cable combs. Nice.
Case & Fans
The case was surprisingly easy to build in given my big stupid hands and complete inexperience. The included cable clips and zipties with the S340 Elite are a nice touch and there's a lotta space for running cables. Airflow doesn't seem to be an issue with a Corsair LL 120 and an LL 140 for exhaust and they are super quiet. Case looks cool as well. Oh and the puck. I like the puck. More useful than I thought it would be.
This WD Black 1TB NVMe is nutty fast, 3430/2790 R/W sequential and 1740/1640 R/W random speeds. Neato. The SP 1TB SSD was also a great deal for extra storage.
Was looking for 1440p with 144hz and the S2716DG had G-Sync as well. Messed with the display settings on the monitor a bit and it looks fantastic. Also changed out the included stand for one that matched the aesthetic, because why not.
I am blown away by the Katana. Sound quality is excellent, simulated surround is awesome, and the thing is powerful as ****. Seriously, beyond 30% volume the walls start shaking. Love it. The software is super customizable for different profiles as well. Highly recommend this.
-Windows 10: It's fine after disabling the bloat.
-Logitech G203 Progidy: Smooth and snappy mouse, though the cord is a little long. Works well with the 3M mousepad.
-G.Skill Ripjaws KM570: My first mechanical keyboard, I really dig the Cherry MX Brown switches.
-NZXT Internal USB Hub: Wanted more USB 2.0 headers just in case and used this to hide my Logitech F710 controller dongles too. It's magnetic which is cool.
-GPU Backplate: Saw this on V1 Tech and thought it fit the build nicely, although it won't add to the part list and I'm too lazy to figure it out.
-RGB: The Corsair Lighting Node Pro came bundled with my ML 140 fans and I added a Lighting Pro set of LED strips. Flashy.
-CableMod AIO Sleeve: It's a sleeve.
