Description

I've recently been on a vendetta to replace crappy laptops with new computers for the average day person. I've been doing the builds for free (what's better than a free hobby?) and this is the first one in the series. This build was problem few and easily the last complicated build I've done. The only preform I faced was finding a quality board for the APU I used. So many times you'll see that a board is FM2+ but will not support the Kaveri and that shows up a lot on Amazon reviews, but lots of research before hand fixes it. This build is for a friend of mine that is doing his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and his 7 year old laptop just wasn't doing it for him anymore. His 4gb RAM was constantly at 80% usage even with nothing up on the desktop and the 8gb of 2133MHz seems to remedy that problem. He was very happy with how it turned out.

+1 for the name, that's what I call my laptop, "The Craptop".

definitely a very nice budget build!! He might want to get a better PSU later on...

Definitely! I let him handpick the parts and decided that he'd rather get the all in one (even though I told him it wasn't as good a quality).

I'm not going to try and do the math while sitting here at work trying to figure out why an application keeps locking up on someone, but wouldn't some 1600@CAS9 be better than 2133@CAS11? The prices are probably about the same, and I don't think it's enough difference for him to notice really, but as you said it's a hobby of yours and I imagine you might have some light to shine on this.

Past that, nice work.

APU's like memory that has a high clock speed vs low latency.

^ That's what I've read and that's exactly why I just went with higher click speeds. This is my first APU build so I can't tell you that I know what I'm talking about lol the internet never lies!

Wouldn't a SSD be very helpful for him also?

It definitely would! I have one in my PC and its definitely helpful but we came to the conclusion that the HDD would be good enough for the time being (it's all about the money for him lol). Even so, from pressing "power" to the start screen, it's only 18 seconds.

but is it portable with a screen? To be fair most laptops under 500 arent meant for gaming anyway..

No it's not, but then again he doesn't need it to be portable. He won't be doing almost any gaming on it.

From time to time I ask my friends if they need help building a new computer, just in case. They don't realize how much I'd like to do it for them, FOR FREE!

I can't tell you how much I hate the shiny metal in there... But he won't be looking in there anytime soon so I just sucked it up.
