DISCLAIMER The current price of this build as of the date of this posting is $1,875.70. The prices reflected in my parts list reflect actual out of pocket costs that includes rebates and gift cards.
I've been limping along with an older Asus "gaming" laptop for some time and decided it was time for a new desktop build. Some upcoming games like DOOM, Overwatch, and The Division got me motivated to put together a capable system to run these and run them well. I started buying parts back in November 2015 starting with the 850 EVO SSD that I used a gift card to purchase. From that point I switched back and forth trying to decide on the right parts and feel like I've put together what I had envisioned from the beginning.
This was my first build and I watched one build video after the next trying to educate myself so I could pull this off. I wasn't worried about installing each part but, I did have some reservation about the wiring. Thankfully, I posted successfully on the first power up. I was able to overclock the 6700K to 4.6 GHz so far with only a ratio change and bumping the voltage up to 1.32.
The only issue I had came with the most expensive part, the graphics card. Originally I had purchased an ASUS Strix 980 ti, Overclocked edition and began having problems after the first day. Games(Rise of the Tomb Raider, Assassins Creed) were crashing on a regular basis. Sometimes I could play ROTR for 30 minutes with no issues and then suddenly it would crash 5 times in a row. After a week of dealing with the issue I decided to return the Strix card for the MSI and so far I have had zero issues. The MSI cards runs a few degrees hotter but fits into the build a little better. I also like the look of the card in the H440 better because the Strix card has "heartbeat" lighting that can't be changed as far as I could tell. I hated seeing the pulsing of the light in my case with no way to change it.
I've very happy with the result of my first build!
