Description

Hey all,

I wanted a nice setup to play back on PC, and to enjoy Elite: Dangerous in 21:9 1440p ;)

Here's the build I just did: I was aiming for a mATX SLI of 970s with a Corsair 350D, but all the Z97 boards were featuring card slots that were too close, and my 970s were touching each other.

I looked around, and found out that the NZXT S340 was almost as small as the 350D, by giving up on the usual (and useless for me) drive bays. So I blessed NZXT and switched by to usual ATX, and now my 970s can breath =)

Props to Amazon Prime, I bought almost everything I could there as the return is so easy and convenient. As soon as I wanted to replace my mATX stuff with ATX, they just sent me the replacement parts right away. Same for the screen, which arrived broken.

Also the LG 34UC97-S screen is great as it acts as a KVM: The screen makes it easy to keep the same keyboard/mouse/headphones with both a mac and a PC by switching between Thunderbolt and DisplayPort/USB inputs.

Update: I refined the build: upgraded my SLI to 2 980 TIs, replaced my keyboard and mouse by SteelSeries, and added a 1TB SSD.

Very professional work. What are you doing beside playing on 1440p?

analogue submitter 1 Build 2 points 28 months ago

Also working on my mac. The screen makes it easy to keep the same keyboard/mouse/headphones with both a mac and a PC by switching between Thunderbolt and DisplayPort/USB inputs.

The monitor itself cost almost 3x of my current PC! lol. Cable Managements are Great! +1

am i the only one who noticed he wrote 2440p nice build +1

piemancoder 3 points 28 months ago

No, I noticed I was about to comment

analogue submitter 1 Build 4 points 28 months ago

Fixed, thanks!

DrumDealer 2 points 28 months ago

Really good build, just wish you had gone with a better case since you already spent a lot of money. i would've gone with the Phanteks Enthoo Pro.

MrFlamingNinjaGuy 1 Build 4 points 28 months ago

I don't. Ean to be rude, but that case is one of the best, it is cheaper but has a lot of nice case features like the psu shroud and the nice cable management options, plus a side window. Sure the enthoo pro is better but it more expensive and a heck of a lot bigger. Judging by his title he wanted a smaller case so the enthoo pro wouldn't fit his needs in that scenario.

DrumDealer 2 points 28 months ago

Not being rude at all lol. I'm not saying the S340 is bad, I just figured he would go with something a little higher quality since he is spending a ton of money already. But it's all personal preference.

MrFlamingNinjaGuy 1 Build 2 points 28 months ago

I totally agree with you! Haha i thought you were bashing on the s340 haha my bad. I like that case but he could have spent so much more money on a case like the older brother the h440.

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 28 months ago

I don't mind the money that much, but I love the s340: Replacing the drive bays by cooling spots is exactly what I was looking for. And the s340 does not look cheap at all =)

MrFlamingNinjaGuy 1 Build 1 point 28 months ago

I have the s340 you should check it out!

DrumDealer 1 point 28 months ago

I LOVE the looks of the H440, the only thing keeping me from it is the horrible airflow. It's a huge turning point for me. I'm more about airflow than silence.

Level99PcFanboy 2 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

The airflow actually isn't half bad. The front panel is floating for better intake.

Great Build! Nice pictures! :)

SilkyZ 1 Build 2 points 25 months ago

Hey, nice build.

I'm looking at something similar and wondering what frame-rates you are getting on that monitor?

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 23 months ago

"I can max out most games and get the fps my monitor can handle (60)."

Hexalumina 2 points 18 months ago

Nice build!!! I have blessed you with my upvote :)

8BitPhoenix 4 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

What sort of frames are you getting with those cards on that monitor?

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 28 months ago

I can max out everything, nothing below 60fps yet (which is the refresh rate of the monitor anyway)

8BitPhoenix 4 Builds 2 points 28 months ago

Niiice! Would love to have your setup you know ;)

It's beautiful! :*)

conniverse 1 point 28 months ago

Wow. Such a clean build! Very well done! I like that window too. :D

qsball1999 1 point 28 months ago

You could fit SLI in the Pictures? whats the deal>

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 28 months ago

Not sure what you mean, but with all the mATX boards, my 970s were not having any space to breath. Hence going back to ATX.

qsball1999 1 point 28 months ago

Oh, I was looking at the pictures and it showed you having 2 GPU's then the Title said you couldn't all good doe.

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 28 months ago

Right, I'll update the title

josh95 1 Build 1 point 28 months ago

How was the mobo working for ya? I'm planning to buy one myself for my build.

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

Perfect, I could have bought a cheaper gaming 3 instead of the gaming 5 as I'm not using the soundcard (using the screen DAC)

InvincibleFlash1008 1 point 27 months ago

Just asking how is that gtx 970 x2 handling your LG 34UC97-S 34.0..... 3.5 vram issues?

I don't want to be rude or being fanboy or backslashing just asking a question. Peace! :)

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 26 months ago

No 3.5 vram issues. I can max out most games and get the fps my monitor can handle (60). The only game I can't set to high or ultra is star citizen, but I'm not sure any current rig can handle it ;)

I don't regret it over 1 GTX980 for just $100 more. SLI scale very well with higher resolution (3440x1440 is not 4k, but getting close)

Aralex 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

Nice Build! I just have one question. I'm planning to build my own rig with Asus VII Gene mobo and the Gigabyte windforce (and same NZXT case). I'm having some concerns about this combination due to the unusual length of the gpu card. As I suspected, the last few centimeters of the gpu card is overlapping with the white metal plate covering the cables, as I can see in the photo. How high is that gpu card from the mobo? How far is it from that white metal plate? I would really appreciate if you could comment and give some hints about this...it's the only thing left before buying the parts :) Thanks alot!

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 23 months ago

No issue at all, the white metal thing is at the same level as the motherboard around the PCIE slots.

DrTot 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

PC LOOKS SICK!!! If only you could change the LED color on Windforce GPUs...

DO YOU HEAR ME GIGABYTE?!?

lol but anyways +1, amazing,

Here's my SLI build in the 350D!

https://pcpartpicker.com/b/ztNNnQ

And you can get an mATX board with a single slot spacing, in the 350D. However, your PSU will be blocking a fan if you have a dual fan GPU.

Similar board to yours, but mATX with extra slot between GPUs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128716

ANYWAY, awesome build. Killer setup.

analogue submitter 1 Build 1 point 28 months ago

Thanks =)

I ordered the GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 before, but the problem is that the GPUs were stuck together, with no space to breath. The advantage of going back to ATX is that there is 1 slot at the bottom of each card to let the air flow. I use air cooling, you use liquid ;)

1300$ monitor e.e... Wished I had money like that to throw around, but sadly, I'm on a potato for a laptop. ;w;

I love stability, and I decided to go for a 1600 CL7 instead of something faster. Check http://www.anandtech.com/show/7364/memory-scaling-on-haswell/10

I'm getting a constant 60FPS in ED ;)

I have 2 LG 34UC97, 1 at work, and I bought it for home once I tried it at work. Frankly, I have a hard time seeing any backlight bleed.

1st the corners are very far and you don't watch them often. 2nd there might be some bleeding under optimal conditions but I really never noticed and I don't think there is any on my 2 screens. But I think it's more efficient for me to take a pic of 2 corners of my current screen, 1 dark 1 bright and let you check it out: http://imgur.com/a/AERQo
