Description

This was my first build and it was an awesome learning experience. I use this machine for gaming, school work, and just daily use. I did not have any problems building it out thankfully. After some overclocking work I was able to achieve stability at 4.4 GHz with about 1.26v with decent temps. I could not get a stable 4.5GHz although I may just need to play around a bit.

I still don't get how +1 works on this website. Is there a button I can't find or is it just something you say here?

You click on the arrow that is pointing up at the top of the build page, or you press on the down arrow if you want to downvote it.

I thought those were useless scrolling buttons thanks

A year old and still maxing out games. Great build...should last a long time.

Seems over all like a good part list, one question though: why did you buy the GTX 780 when you could have gotten a GTX 970 for $100 less?

  • 1 point

I assume he bought it before the price drops and 9 series release. If you look he manually entered his own price and it looks like the normal evga 780 prices before the release so I'm assuming he didn't get ahold of a retailer and say hey I would like you guys to turn back time on your prices to about 3 months ago and sell me a card!!!

Ah, I read 2014 instead of 2013 at the build date. I assumed it was a recent build (that's why I was surprised by the price on the evga). Scratch that question.

Yeah I actually posted this a while ago but I deleted it by accident. I posted it again for a friend and people actually responded to this one.

Exactly this. I manually added the purchase prices from my inventory as I actually posted this last year but deleted it by accident

I actually build this last november right when Nvidia dropped their prices on the 780 (from ~$650 to $480) to compete with the R290 and r290x price point. And of course a month later nvidia comes out with the 780ti and now 970. Im still super happy with the purchase tho.

Why the professional series power supply?

  • 1 point

Honestly I was thinking of getting a different vid card and sticking with a higher power supply for future sli but then nvidia dropped the prices on the 780 by a few hundred dollars so I went for it.

I was asking because the HX series of Corsair Power Supplies are used for reliability and used in workstation applications. Since this seemed to be a gaming build I was confused.

I actually did not know this. I just looked for total wattage and modular capability and at the time the HX was something like $20 off and it seemed like a good choice. I could have saved some money there i suppose but I don't mind.

excellent build! I know you haven't overclocked your CPU or GPU yet because we got similar scores and I have the 4770 and 780. Get dem extra points!

Thanks! I actually have OC the CPU but i didn't screenshot the 3d-Mark results. I think they were close to 10k! And yes you are right I still havent OC the GPU yes.

All good, I'm sure those gains will be readily apparent. I used the MSI afterburner with my graphics card and it works great! (the EVGA tool went down for a bit due to disputes about them stealing another group's tool.)

Good to know. I;ve heard good things about MSI afterburner. I'll have to play around with it when I get some time. I have yet to OC any vid card. Any quick advice?

yeah up it in increments of like 20 mhz or less, don't touch voltage yet. Start with Memory clock keep upping it after each benchmark until it crashes, then down by 20 and start in increment of say like 5. then after crash, go down by 5. Write that number down then bring it stock clock and start doing the same with the Core Clock. That's as far as I got on mine. I don't know the correct procedure with messing with voltage and it kinda scares me. but that's a start.

Wow thanks. That is really helpful. I too am a little scared to mess with the voltage; don't want to fry it.

Any tips on managing with your R4 case?

  • 1 point

Sure what kind of management? Definitely don't forget to clean the dust screen in the front. It's easy to forget. Running cables around the H100i was a bit tricky as its a pretty tight fit with the UD4H motherboard but it wasn't impossible. I took out the drive bay for more airflow as I have been OC'ing and what not. As far as cable managment, I made sure all cables found their way to the backside of the case and were zip tied. I suppose what kinda of components you have and power supply will dictate that but I can be more specific if you have questions.

True story although I do have my mini donnie face in pic 4. I wasn't really going for a TMNT build more so than naming it after my fav turtle
