Description

After using a craptop for 5 years with integrated graphics, a 620GB HDD, 6gb of ddr3 ram, a 1366x768 display and saving up money, I decided it was time for an upgrade. This thing crushes any game i've tested so far at 1080p. I feel this is definitely a good build for about $1100, just the tower itself. There were complications while building it, but hey it's my first time, i'm learning. I use this build mostly for gaming, watching youtube videos, light photo and video editing, and other internet-ey things, which it all does extremely well. Very happy with how it turned out.

Also called The Dark Spoon because a friend wanted a pre-built by a spoon, but the pre-built was bad so we built our own. Aka The Dark Spoon

Regrets: 7 Months in, I wish I could have gotten a 500gb 970 evo for the same price I got my 250gb 960 evo. I bought the 1060 for about $340 during the cryptocurrency craze, so I could have gotten it for much less today. Also ram, I spent $180 on it and the price has come down significantly. I would like to replace my stock CPU cooler and maybe add a couple case fans eventually... (I also changed my headphones for the Razer Pro v2)

Update: 3/26/19 I got an aftermarket CPU cooler, which can be seen on the list. It runs cooler at a lower speed, and is much quieter!

Part Reviews

CPU

Awesome CPU. Very powerful and runs pretty cool. Came with Turbo boost enabled.

CPU Cooler

Much better than Intel's stock cooler, wish I didn't wait so long to buy this! It's quiet, small, and keeps my CPU cooler than stock

Motherboard

Had to work out some kinks at first, but I really like this. Wifi works very well, bluetooth works with my headphones for the most part. The RGB light on it is not very noticable, but neat to say the least.

Memory

Looks slick, runs slick, 3200mhz is nothing short of amazing. 16gb is a lot of ram and it should last a long time

Storage

Absolutely BLAZING fast, even compared to a SATA SSD.

Storage

A ton of storage on the cheap, good for a hard drive. 7200rpm rocks.

Video Card

Amazing graphics card. 6GB of VRAM is more than enough for a while. Crushes games at buttery smooth framerates

Case

This case looks amazing! There's a good amount of room, and keeps my computer mostly cool. However, the drive bays are where the PSU is, so I got both of them stuck and the screws were hidden in the drive bay, in a box that was extremely hard to get out. These set me back a few hours in building time. But other than that, I love this case.

Power Supply

Very high quality cables, Full modularity is the way to go

Monitor

Absolutely stunning monitor. 1080p is crystal clear compared to my 768p laptop. Very bright, 24" is a great size, even bigger than expected. 144hz is so smooth you have no idea if you have a 60hz panel. 60 feels choppy compared to this.

Keyboard

A pleasure to type on, RGB is stunning on this thing. Orange switches feel and sound amazing.

nice choice of parts for an intel build! I'm kind of a ryzen person, since I think they're better value. That's just my opinion and still a really nice build.

Thanks, i'm more of an intel person myself

Pretty sick build! I would reccomend a Hyper 212 Wvo or similar cooler for more better boost clocks and overall silent operation, but otherwise, I wouldn’t change much about this build if it were mine(maybe the case but that’s personal preference).

Thank you, i've considered that cooler. The stock cooler is suiting my needs, never went above 65, GPU hasn't gone above 70 under load as well.

Are you using wireless internet thingy or cable?

Popboy11 submitter 1 Build 2 points 11 months ago

It came with two sticks I just screw into the back, as you can see in the last two pictures.

Can you turn off the light in the mother board??

Popboy11 submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

I haven't tinkered with it, but I remember reading on the Manual that you can customize it, so yeah you can.

Ccvvuujj 1 point 11 months ago

Thanks.

BuildBoy12 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Yes you can, in the BIOS under the tool section there is an entire configuration for the RGB header.

Thanks.
