I am new to computer building and this was my first attempt. I do not know much about parts and really went off of product reviews and other builds on this website. The purpose of this build is to serve as an HTPC as well as to do some light gaming - i was working within budget that I tried to stay within (~$500).

CPU - everybody including my brother raves about this chip and while I haven't overclocked this chip yet I will be looking to do a little bit of that in the future

CPU Cooler - low profile needed for the small case

MOBO - got as a gift from my sister/bro-in-law. pretty easy to use for somebody new to building like me

Memory - got as a gift from by brother who is into gaming and probably a lot more than I need but why not

SSD - got the cheapest one I could and is way faster than my old computer so while I know it's not the best one out there - it serves my purpose and budget

HDD - had a 1TB external that I put in here and got the 3TB as I'm a bit of a hoarder and figure I wouldn't need more space than that

GPU - good reviews and read that it packs good punch for a budget

Case - kind of an impulse buy - it was the first thing I bought but I knew I wanted small

PSU - should have probably gotten a modular PSU but it is 80+Bronze and budget friendly

Anyways feel free to comment and thanks for looking at the build

nice cable management considering the case and a non-modular psu, +1

Thanks - it was probably the most fulfilling part of the build

nice +1

For a $500 budget build you did a great job mate, the RAM is overkill but tbh the parts work well together, enjoy! +1

Thanks - my budget was definitely helped by the parts I received from my family. I do realize the RAM is not necessary but it was free so I might as well use it

Oh definitely! Nothing better priced than something free in my eyes

I really really like the part selections on this build, everything is well balanced. Maybe a bit overkill in some areas but thats just because when family choose parts they always go overboard. :)

Im just wondering how you managed to get some parts for so cheap in Canada? Like the GPU and power supply for instance retail for ~$30 more each. This seems more on par with American pricing

Honestly I just used this website to find deals when I could. The PSU I probably got about a month ago from NCIX for $44.99 with a $15 MIR and the GPU I got last week from NCIX as well for $159.99 with a $20 MIR and I think this promo is still on.

Another thing I noticed about this site is that the MIR values are not always deducted from the retail for Canada Computers so you might actually get some better pricing there.

Very good bang-for-buck ratio! +1

Nicely done! That form factor is a doozy for a first time build, but you managed nicely +1

thanks - looking back I probably should have used a larger case for my first build but it worked out well in the end

Very organized and budget oriented build, hard to think that this is a first time build. You must have done some homework, +1

Decent build with overkill RAM, but you could've swapped the CPU for an i3 or 860k.

so far so good - but I haven't really had the time to do anything with the computer yet
