Description

Welcome to this build of AMD Ryze- Woa Woa WOa there Mason in those pictures... are those... Aisles? That doesn't look like a house at all! Correct you are! This is the system we built to showcase the new AMD Ryzen 7 1800X at Microcenter (And yes you can play with it if you come in). Also, PCPP was screaming "ERROR ERROR! CPU COOLER INCOMPATIBILITY!" but as we can all see it fits, and it fit standard out of the box.

Anyway it was quite a fun build to do. The sleeved cables were a nice touch for the aesthetics, and Overclocking was... Tricky to say the least. That's a story though*. Overall im happy with how it looks, and has drawn a lot of attention.

"Isn't that RAM a bit overkill?" Yes, Yes it is. Is the PSU Overkill? Also Yes! Do I care? Also Ye- Wait... NO!! Was the Glorious Mouse Pad needed? HECK YEA!

That's all i really have to say... I don't talk much so just ask questions I guess?

*STORY TIME!!: Overclocking was a struggle and it took literally 5 days to do. We passed it around to 4 people in the store to try and overclock it and they all couldn't get to 4.1. It took me and another associate to get 4.1 GHz but when we did... When we did we destroyed the benchmarks and we were all proud of finally, finally getting it.

So many builds coming out that are feature worthy! Great showcase build and impressive overclock since it was just released.

Maybe you should have put liquid nitrogen in to get that overclock. Would make a great showcase.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 3 points 17 months ago

just waiting on better BIOS stability and just general maintenance and improvements. Hoping for better soon!

I wanted to do and open air LN2 test bed, and we joked about it a little in store, but the good old "That's not safe Mason. What made you think you would be allowed to do that?" My response "It would have been fun though..."

dfour802 3 points 17 months ago

Which Microcenter is this located at?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 5 points 17 months ago

Towson MD

EEYY that's the one near me :D.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 3 points 17 months ago

Yup, we have the HTC Vise set up on demo so you can play on that as well!

DJHeroMasta 3 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

O_O Now I must to go visit Microcenter.

DJHeroMasta 3 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

What, my first time seeing people posting builds stating that they're in MD!?!? We must meet! I need new friends lol.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

A couple people here on PCPP are from MD, just dont mention it! There is more than I

jakesno 2 points 17 months ago

Terrific build! Nice little story with the overclock. It's often the journey and not just the results but most of all thank you for the OVERKILL! Let'm eat cake yo!

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

There was so much excess used here.. 32Gb of ram running 3200 MHz, 32Gb of Ram, though Trident Z is the most beautiful RAM out there

Luckiestluck 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

did you have any ram issues? i hear ram issues are the most common with ryzen

dragoon20005 4 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

nice build.

I may prob get the same parts as yours for my own Ryzen build as well except the GPU will prob be a AMD RX Vega

what BIOS you are running with the Asus board?

I would like to see your max OC on the 1800X

but just for science

can you do the comparison performance with all 8 cores 16 treads and go down the stack like 8 cores and 8 treads with SMT/HT off

Then 6 cores 12 treads test

followed by 4 Cores 8 treads and OC the heck out of it to see if the 4 Cores could hit 4.2GHz and above

then see if disabling SMT/HT will further increase the OCability of the 1800X

this might give us an idea of how will the Ryzen R5 and R3 will perform

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

We are definitely going to be swapping to VEGA as our GPU of choice for this demo to show a true AMD/AMD Build and compare it to INTEL/NVidia build.

As for the 6 and 4 core tests... You just gave me a very fun project now, though the clock speeds on the 6 and 4 core I am expecting to be higher since it will be less heat generated, giving us more headroom and less voltage needed.

BIOS on the Crosshair VI is "CROSSHAIR VI HERO BIOS 0702". The Beta bios was just too unstable for us to use so we flashed back to the 0702 version.

the 4.1GHz is max OC for us with our cooling solution, though currently though AMD set the world record for Cinebench R32 with a score of 2449 on LN2 on the same MoBo we used, officially making it the worlds fastest 8c/16t Processor.

dragoon20005 4 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

interesting

It prob because of the 4 DIMMs

I got one buddy who used 2 DIMMs on the Beta 5704 BIOS and he got a lucky 4.2GHz on all 8 cores cooled by the Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4. Max. temperature he saw was 75°C after several hours of gaming

4.2Ghz on air with the Noctua Cooler and max 75°C after a few hours of gaming and 1.35V.

2.933GHz for the G.Skill ram with approx. 115MHz FSB. <--- bit lucky manny are stuck at 2.66GHz.

he got lucky with the CPU, must be those golden 1800Xs which can clock up to 4.2GHz

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

I'll investigate the 4 DIMM vs 2 DIMM OC and see if it helps, thanks for the tips!

rhali8 2 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

4.1GHz on the 1800X... Holy jesus...

That is one heck of a PC. Awesome work, wish I could come in store to have a play... if only I didn't live in Australia ;(

+1 :D

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

It's very fun and much time has been spent

mb67 5 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

Very nice build! I can't wait for the rest of my parts to arrive so that I can do my Ryzen build. :-D

I'm still waiting for my Crosshair VI mobo to come, as I pre-ordered on launch day. I've got the 1800X, PSU, case, & Kraken X52 already and the Trident Z RAM is on the way.

Question - I only ordered two 8GB sticks of Trident Z (3200); Should I have gone with four 8GB sticks instead for RAM OC stability?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

We sticks would be plenty, our 4 sticks is massive overkill but we wanted to because "Why not"

rcdsouza 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

whats your idle temp for cpu?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Around 35C

PigWithAMustache 2 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

I'm hoping my microcenter does this lol. Great build :D

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Some Do have demo's so maybe check in and look.

Gooberdad 8 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

Good deal, Mason.

Thumbs up.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks Goober!

binary132 2 points 17 months ago

Hi there. I have the same cooler from my OC FX-8350 (which I took to about about 4.4, for a 10% gain over stock.) Nice build. I'm definitely considering replacing with an 1800x!

I have a question for you: did you do any analysis or comparison between "XFR" (aka "self overclocking") and manual tuning? I assume you hit 4.1 via hand-tuned manual overclocking. I know very little about the expected behavior of XFR, but it was marketed as an automated self-overclock which would tune the CPU to the available cooling ceiling. That is obviously a very desirable feature, so if it has been oversold it would be valuable to know.

My other question is whether you have measured the system's power draw under load.

Thanks!

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

XFR took us to 4.0 and we wanted MPOOAARR POWWAA! So we went to 4.1 and now we are happy. I'm looking into the auto OC more to learn how to make it work better. Also no power draw measure yet, though I am curious.

mlach 4 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

Turn that rear intake fan and make it an exhaust.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

The way we have it set up is 3 intake (2 front one rear) and 2 exhaust in the top to have positive pressure

mlach 4 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

in that case, a fan filter should be added. you've got to have a filter lying somewhere around aisle 14 or 15, right? XD

I have no idea of your store layout

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

Aisle 14 is HDM cables and 15 is VGA. Filters are in aisle 22 (Can I sticker that)

mlach 4 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Never said no before.

Joeyg29 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

what micro center are you located at?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Towson MD

tomtomj2 8 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

Looks awesome!

I just put my Ryzen build in my Mastercase, great case, but I love the 5t version. Fits the AMD Theme ;)

LightningManGTS 2 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

Ya think we can get some bios pics? I'm kinda curious as to how you guys got 4.1 stable enough to run cinebench with that ram you got there. I got the same hardware except the sticks which are the 3k CAS14 variant, So I'm hoping to piggyback off of what you guys did.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

With a high core voltage... like 1.6 V-Core high. But the Temps are OK so.... I guess it's alright...

DeltaForceGM01 2 points 15 months ago

4.1GHZ has it exploded yet lols?

Chickennugger 2 points 11 months ago

+1 for dat description

apull 2 Builds 2 points 10 months ago

no full case sidewindow view, only zOoOMED in photos. MEH!!!! Nice build however

carolinaelite12 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Why didn't you go with a GTX1080?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 2 points 17 months ago

We were given the 1070, Cross hair VI and the 1800X and the rest was up to us

carolinaelite12 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

You guys should definitely slip in a 1080Ti when they come out....up until the Vega line is released that is.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

We wouldn't be allowed to do that due to the expected demand for the ti

carolinaelite12 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Wouldn't that apply to Vega as well when it is releases?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Most likely but we will be swapping get it out. Not immediately on launch day but it would be soon after launch.

StinkyWhizzleteets 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks for posting what a full blown build can do. 1753 on cinabench is awesome to see. I had talked myself out of upgrading my PC till maybe qtr. 3 of this year, but I am not sure I can wait now. I may have to buy from your competitor since you are going to make me spend money with your build XD.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Q2 is going to have the cheaper 6 core and 4 core Ryzen so wait and see their perf.

dukenukemman 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

very sweet build, wish a microcenter was in tucson.

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

We do have a Webstore where we can ship it to you. Just change the location to Webstore Here

BodiXDDD 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Cpu temperatures?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 0 points 16 months ago

38 idle, 65 load

BodiXDDD 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Did you need a bracket for the CPU cooler? What temps do u get on idle and load with the CPU?

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 16 months ago

The CPU cooler just used the stock mount from Corsair for AMD and it fits

akula2 1 point 16 months ago

Hello, nice build. I'm ditching Intel in favor of Ryzen 1700 for its value and performance.

I've a Q regd. this Asus board -- does it retain RAMDisk feature in the BIOS? I'm very used to this fantastic feature on Intel ROG boards. Please confirm and good luck with that build!

intelmla2015@gmail.com 0 points 17 months ago

can you post pics of your battle station? battle station??

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 16 months ago

My main station that I own can be found here

https://pcpartpicker.com/b/4scYcf

intelmla2015@gmail.com 1 point 16 months ago

lol when I mean battle stations I mean pics of your whole set up xD

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 16 months ago

My actual station isn't the cleanest at the moment, pictures coming

intelmla2015@gmail.com 2 points 16 months ago

Btw talking about the battle station for this build curious on how you utilize the space and how cool this will look!

intelmla2015@gmail.com 1 point 16 months ago

okay

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Because AMD themselves accept the 1070 beats a 480 and encouraged us to use Nvidia in the build to show how strong their new Processors are and we were supplied the CPU, MoBo and GPU.

I've been outplayed ;(

Mason54 submitter 23 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Yup, super secret... I wonder how ever found it.. .(PM's are wonderful) I MEAN.... Hi Jip

Anyway i felt super sketchy pushing the voltage any higher than what we have it at... Max Voltage on Ryzen is 1.7 on the V-Core and we have it at 1.6. SO kinda close but temps are fine we think.. .NO ONE WILL UPDATE TO SUPPORT IT!!!
