Modern NZXT Setup - first PC Build

by CmdJarvis

Description

My first PC build. The main things I was aiming to do with it are gaming and photo editing (Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop) followed by general pc use and software development (maybe running an Ubuntu VM if I decide not to dual boot). My plan is to upgrade my monitor to a curved ultra wide but I'm probably going to wait for the HDR curves to come out.

Should I buy a 1080 Ti? I've got a 1060 at the moment mate.

ndivenyi 3 points 14 months ago

If you want 1440p 144hz or 4k 60fps then i would, but for 1080p its overkill

Wolf88 4 Builds 11 points 18 months ago

Your setup gave me wood. plus one.

Stunning display. Inwin looks like it might have cases with wood on them soon. Maybe keep an eye out for them ;)

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Yeah I saw those the other day on HardwareCanucks. A little too late now though as I'm probably not going to rebuild.

Dovah17 3 points 18 months ago

Love the build, basically my dream build. Link to the wallaper and other like that one?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Thanks. Here is the wallpaper: https://free4kwallpapers.com/no-watermarks/originals/2015/07/15/minimalist-deer.jpg

I found it originally by googling "minimalist wallpaper"

+1 Well done Sir. RBGs but tasteful, indeed a rare sight.

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Thanks and I agree. I think if you are careful RGB is a great way to breath new life into a setup and even an entire room that would normally require an expensive rebuild/redesign.

This is a great build

Dang, I have to be a member to look at the products, but thanks for showing me

jin0425 1 Build 3 points 18 months ago

Wow, how can your first build be so clean and sleek?!! Do you have any resource( a YouTube video guide or something similar) that you used to build your computer?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

I watched some videos of builds using this case (usually reviews). Some from bigger YouTubers like HardwareCanucks and BitWit, others from people just posting about their build. There are a few videos I found where the person recorded their entire S340 elite build which was helpful. Another very helpful thing I did was find pictures of peoples builds here on PCPartPicker where they used the same parts to see how they wired things.

jin0425 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Oh thanks! I guess I should check those out for my first build too.

I'm not into wood setups, but ur setup looks really nice :D great job. Maybe consider drewing a hole for the keyboard cable.

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Thanks. I just can't bring myself to put a hole in the desk. I'm hoping that when I upgrade my monitor I can do something about that cable then.

Tandy 2 points 18 months ago

AWESOME MAN!!!!!! This pc is so peacfull!

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 0 points 18 months ago

Thanks

GusHus 2 points 17 months ago

Very nice setup. I've got a question regarding GPU temps. I'm running a similar setup but with an Asus GTX 1080TI OC 11GB. The card is running very hot way above 70°C. I also have almost no air traveling through the radiator of the Kraken X62.

How do you keep your card cool?

Thanks

sotik 2 points 13 months ago

My wife always find it funny when I refer to things like this as sexy. But man, that computer, plus the wood accent looks really sexy. Clean looking, refreshing looking, and well as I said just down right sexy. As sexy as an inanimate object can be ;). I bet it also is a beast when it comes to playing games as well.

How are you enjoying the MOBO? I am looking to build a computer almost exactly the same specs. Going to throw it into a Phanteks - Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case though. My only concern is that people say this MOBO is just an entry level board.

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

MOBO has worked great. Maybe there are more advanced custom settings that other boards can do that this one can't but I haven't needed them. Keep in mind that this was my first build I probably don't even know about those settings. From my research, this board had consistently good reviews, it met the aesthetic I was going for, and it had all the expansion slots I was I wanted to have.

Ametista 2 Builds 1 point 18 months ago

I love everything about this build! Which camera did you use?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

Thanks. The camera was a Nikon D810 using three lenses. The Nikon 85mm f1.4, Nikon 14-24 F2.8 and the Nikone 50mm f1.8.

soccerkingpilot 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

I appreciate you taking proper photos. People spend $4,000 on a computer and can't be bothered to hold their iPhone still when they take a photo!

bradgnoyes 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Great looking setup. Get some cable combs for those gpu and psu cables! Such a well taken care of setup deserves those combs!

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Good idea, I didn't know about those. I'll look into them.

bradgnoyes 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

They're just little things but they go a long way to keep your build looking tidy. Check out my builds if you want to see how they look. I use different kinds on each one.

Techmaster123Xd 1 point 18 months ago

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

HOW ARE THE TEMPS

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

I don't check the temps that much but I haven't run into any issues there yet. We'll see what happens when I upgrade to a higher resolution monitor later on.

Camden92 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

soccerkingpilot 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Did you make the wrist rest?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

Nope, I happened to find the wrist rest on massdrop. It's a NPKC Wooden Wrist Rests https://www.massdrop.com/buy/36602. It was hard to find them elsewhere so that is where I got it. I think you can find some on Amazon though.

skoop321 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Hey just a question; I'm looking at closed loop cooling, and I was wondering why you chose the NZXT Kraken over a Corsair Hydro or similarly priced one. How happy are you with its performance? So far has it been worth the cash? I heard that Corsair has better quality control and possibly better or equal performance. It does look damn good with that infinity mirror though.

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

So honestly the number one reason why I chose the Kraken is because it just looks really really good. That said, from all the research I did before buying, people seemed to be happy with it and the performance was also quite good from reviewer benchmarks. So far, I think its great. No temp issues, not crazy loud, and it's probably the best looking closed loop cooling system available today.

breakerion 2 Builds 1 point 18 months ago

EXCELLENT overall look and match of that setup, no pimp or extras needed, I just wished the case was black to pop those yellow/wood tones more, but nicely done indeed, cheers! SUperb great job for a first time, EnJoY!!

JackOfSpades789 1 point 18 months ago

I really love the rustic vibe your build is giving off! Speaking of which, have you heard of the wood cases In-Win was demoing at Computex? I think one of those would look really good here!

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Thanks. Yeah I saw those a couple days ago and thought they would work great here. I don't see myself rebuilding at this point though.

digil 1 point 18 months ago

Get some cable combs and that will be one of the cleanest builds I have seen. Really nice!

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

Someone mentioned that and I didn't know about them. I'm going to be getting some though.

Norcla 2 Builds 1 point 18 months ago

Bojones37 1 point 18 months ago

getting the same case, noob question. What is the point of getting two different sized nzxt case fans?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

I got the 140mm to allow moving as much air as possible. My assumption is that the more air moved supports better thermals.

TheProSeidon 1 point 18 months ago

Hey! Beautiful build! Quick question tho! What's the monitor you've got???

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

It's a Dell u2414h

stevetalkowski 1 point 17 months ago

Gorgeous build, and love the minimal RGB lighting. Combing through everyone's builds as I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on component orders myself.

AsianPartPicker 1 point 17 months ago

May I ask what LED strips are used to light up the behind of the desk?

AsianPartPicker 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks

CrepOne 1 point 17 months ago

Awesome!

Vandros 1 point 17 months ago

I am going to attempt my first build in about 2 weeks. I love yours!!! I love this case and I have seen 120mm in other builds and 2-4 fans. Why only two and why 120 and 140mm? Thanks for sharing your build!!!

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks. The top fan area can take a 140mm so I added it to get a bit more airflow. I have no idea how to fit more exhaust fans into the case. Definitely not sure how anyone got more than 2.

TRbarthvader 1 point 16 months ago

I know this using super old, but I just wanted to ask a question in hopes you would answer. I'm building a very similar build, and I can't seem to find solid white cables for the EVGA PSU. Did your c series cables work ok with your e series PSU?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Working great so far.

hesif 1 point 16 months ago

Beautiful themed setup +1

jerichofayne 1 point 16 months ago

Insanely great and clean looking. Wow

Huzee9mm 1 point 15 months ago

Awesome build man. Can you tell me what strip lighting your using? I love the effect!

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks, it's the Philips Hue 2nd Gen Light Strip.

brenguy 1 point 14 months ago

hey did you have to get the internal usb hub because of the kraken ? does the kraken need a usb 2.0 port or something?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

If I recall the main benefit of the internal USB was for the for the lighting.

brenguy 2 points 14 months ago

thanks for the reply! I'm going to copy your build lol hope that is okay!

brenguy 1 point 14 months ago

how did you hook up the nzxt water cooling system on your asus mobo? doesn't it require 2.0 usb?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

I honestly don't recall. Runs great though, no issues thus far.

ndivenyi 1 point 13 months ago

Is the top fan mount on the S340 Elite 120mm or 140mm?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

It's a 140mm.

ndivenyi 1 point 13 months ago

Thanks for the response.

ndivenyi 1 point 13 months ago

How does the G403 perform? +1 BTW

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Works great and feels great, no noticeable issues from me. Keep in mind I don't game competitively but I've heard good things from reviewers who do.

starrman 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Holy... By the what, what monitor are you using?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Dell u2414h

joelb123 1 point 12 months ago

Im very inspired by this for my first build. I have a few questions, first what kind of lights are those behind your desk? And second, does this case come with the white bottom bar as shown in yours? The pics on this site only show all black.

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

The lights on the desk are Philips Hue lightstrips. For the S340 Elite case the bottom bar is white on the website ... unless something changed.

OrbitalBuzzsaw 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Damn that's a pretty build. I smell a Setup Wars seal of approval coming.

Ebruhn113 1 point 11 months ago

awesome, awesome build and setup, I'm in awe! Did you make that wrist rest or are the available online? Also, would you recommend the aer rgb fan; I am getting a hue plus so I am wondering if it is worth it to get a glowy boi fan

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

I got the wrist rest from Massdrop here https://www.massdrop.com/buy/36602. You don't need the fan, personally I like it since it adds to the look. At the end of the day though, it's all about the appearance. I think the it looks more complete with the fans.

bladd12001 3 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

I have a question, what tabletop or countertop are you using?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

It's the maple top for the Uplift desk. https://www.upliftdesk.com/

bladd12001 3 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

thank you. if I'm being honest I did not think that you would respond. you have a very nice build here, an an amazing setup.

bokuwa 1 point 10 months ago

Would using the kraken, hue and front panel usb 2.0 connectors need three 2.0 headers on the motherboard?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

I don't recall exactly but I do recall that I needed the usb hub.

ggggovi 1 point 9 months ago

Wow. This is the cleanest build I have seen.

Absolutely perfect!

Thadeus_22 1 point 8 months ago

I keep seeing a lot of similar builds where everyone is using some variation of the 850 Evo. I plan on using the 960 Evo m.2, what's your opinion on the 850 EVO? Is it worth having both the 850 and 960 SSDs on top of a 3 TB Seagate HDD?

Incredible build too! +1 OP

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I was thinking on going with an m.2 drive too but from what I was reading it seemed like performance gains would be essentially imperceptible unless you are doing huge reads/writes (like editing a lot of 4k video). For my use cases (photo editing, gaming, development, general computer usage) it just didn't seem worth the extra cost. This isn't from experience, however, just from the benchmark comparison that I read at the time.

Thadeus_22 1 point 8 months ago

So if I'm doing a little bit of editing in 4K, the 850 should suffice then. Sounds good to me man, thanks for your input.

One final question, what other programs require huge reads/writes (would Solidworks/Autodesk Inventor fall under this?)

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I'm not too familiar with those applications so I can't say for sure. Anything where you are pushing around gb's of data the m.2 should help. If it is only every now and then though, it probably isn't worth the cash.

Motexteile 1 point 8 months ago

Hi, do you have a video while building this?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

No. I did have some youtube videos of other people building in the case that I used for reference though.

Pandora.Lost 1 point 6 months ago

Thank you so much for letting me know :D im in the process of building one as well !

Misoandricegamer 1 point 5 months ago

This is absolutely gorgeous! Also your first build...just wow.

I’ve just decided I want to build my first pc, how hard was actually putting it all together after you had all the pieces? It’s a little daunting.

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks. It was that hard to do. I just took my time. Watching other people assemble machines was quite helpful and YouTube is full of those. Looking at reviews would also help since reviewers sometimes include installation in the review.

Subsonic1127 1 point 5 months ago

what is the lighting setup for this?

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Interior lights are the NZXT Hue+ and lights on the desk are Philips Hue Lightstrips

chaf12 1 point 4 months ago

Perfect amount of RGB, you don't see that often

ThatGuyBryce 1 point 4 months ago

Hi, what lamp is that? and what's that white object underneath it? Beautiful build (:

CmdJarvis submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks. The lamp is called the Fade lamp from http://fadestudio.com/. If by white object you mean the little thing on the edge of the desk that is one of clasps from the foot hammock.
