Build

4790K, Dual 980, I call it - Thor's Hammer

by DoctorWu

Description

Using this primarily for gaming but also Photoshop and some video editing with Premier and After Effects. The case is awesome, was very easy to build with, built in cable management is great. Using the Asus software I've got the CPU overclocked to 4.9Ghz, runs cool and stable.

do your 980's make a weird sound aswell when the fans turn down the RPM from lets say 40% downwards? i have that weird sound from the fans when i switch from games to the desktop and back.

None that I've noticed. (sorry for the late reply)

Did you paint/strip the heat sinks on the motherboard?

DoctorWu submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Nope, just bad lighting and color using my phones camera. The heat sinks are the light brushed gold color Asus is using on all the Z97 boards.

Also, all those LED's are white, not blue, to give you an idea of how bad the color is on my cellphone.

beast build...im debating of sli my 980 as well. probably in a few yrs once games are pushin 1440p.

DoctorWu submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Yeah, I know they're overkill for now but I figured this will probably be my last build for a number of years and wanted to make sure I had matching cards so I went all in.

same. i dont plan on building another beast system, hoping this last me 5 yrs.

why you didn't go for Raid 0?

DoctorWu submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

I'm really kicking myself for not doing that. I'm probably going to pick up another EVO and do it.

How's the cooler? did you have problems with it? do you recommend it?

DoctorWu submitter 1 Build 1 point 39 months ago

Sorry for the late reply. I like the cooler a lot - no problems at all installing it, though I put the fans on backwards...I should really have them exhausting out of the case but it seemed logical that I'd want to pull cool air over the radiator.... That said I don't have any heat issues at all. I'm OC'd to 4.8ghz.
