Description

Hi,

Well I did it! I finally built a PC form scratch. Thanks in large part to the advice on this website forums, i selected the Intel 6700 chip and 980 Ti on top of a ROG Asus Viii Hero board.

I am using this PC (right now actually) for boring stuff - business applications, photography and video editing and moving into some PC gaming from console gaming.

Apart from a dead motherboard and one dead HDD, things went well and it took two days (including replacement part delivery time) to build. Very happy with the result. The Define R5 case is silent, utterly silent - it's incredible.

I tried to take some photos to show the progress. I know there will be tings that i haven't done, or maybe even done correctly that you pros will see in the photos - please point them out to me so i can learn.

Thanks Jon

Part Reviews

CPU

Very fast! This CPU is extremely powerful. Coming from an i7 2.9Ghz iMac - it was like walking and then being given a Ferrari on the autobahn... Very happy with the stability, the temps both idle and under load.

CPU Cooler

This is a big cooling unit! I bought this based on reviews, and it is fairly easy to install for a first timer - just wondering if i should have gotten two fans vs. the single it comes with...

Motherboard

3 stars as i did receive a DOA unit and the 2nd one was very fickle until updating the Bios via the flash tool. It appears to have settled down a little now. I also had a hard time figuring out where everything went by just reading the manual, admittedly it is my first ever build so inexperience played a part there. May be a tad unjust with 3 stars.

Memory

Great RAM, showed up at advertised speeds and clock rates. No dead sticks. Happy!

Storage

Incredible drive, and incredible performance. Wow this sucker is fast! Not used SSD before, so this is a whole new level of fast application loads, and boot time for me!

Storage

Ok, got a DOA drive that i RMA'd. They are noisy (Although inside the Define R5 case, you don't hear anything from the drives). Used for storage of images and video files.

Video Card

Not the easiest thing to install - thought that i had a defective unit until i searched the web and found that BOTH not EITHER (As stated in the manual) power cables need to be connected. Rendering is much faster, and the only game played so far is Mad Max, under load the card is stable and looks gorgeous.

Case

I love this case, simple. I wanted a non flashy stylish case that was silent. This fits all of those requirements perfectly. It is easy to work inside the case, and the cable management is awesome out of the box!

Power Supply

Works, powers everything up :)

Optical Drive

Does it's job, there for the OS install on the new build and also for when i get images and video files via disc - a necessary tool still for me, and this works great!

Operating System

Windows 10 is the reason I ended my 14 year relationship with Apple. I love the OS, and how MSFT have approached updates as a service vs. major point releases for their OS now.

Wireless Network Adapter

Do not have Ethernet run to my PC location, so wireless is my only option to avoid ugly cables of banging up the walls! This wifi card is FAST! Very very fast, i get full upload / download specs on my broadband (85/85) continuously using speedtest, real world usage is great - no lag of dropping connection

Monitor

Very nice screens, they did not work out of the box with the DisplayPort, although that was a function of the EVGA GEFORCE card not being updated to latest firmware. Once that was done. they both work great. Image is good and color reproduction was fairly accurate - small calibration needed only.

Keyboard

Not loving the keys or travel on this KYB. It's a nice size, just getting used to it from my old Apple KYB days i guess...

Mouse

Awesome, comfortable in my hand. Like the back/fwd buttons for my thumb and the battery life as advertised is insane (3 years!!!!)

For a first build you did a really good job with cable management. +1

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 3 points 21 months ago

Thank you. It was inspired from the builds i studied on this site. The number one thing that folks took to town was the cable management :)

tejadam868 1 Build 3 points 21 months ago

Yea, there's really no excuse for a mess of cables. It's a free way to improve airflow and things just look so much cleaner that way.

Anyone who downvotes this or gives him crap for calling it the beast should get off this site. Yes, a lot of people do it and i can see how it may be annoying to some. But in his eyes its a beast of a computer. He built it himself, and he can name it what he wants. I mean i could say, a tip for making online accounts dont name it "SpecificAlduin". People need to look what the build is before they judge.

All that aside, Fantastic build man. +1

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 4 points 21 months ago

Thanks man! I am very proud of my beast!

bubbz1324 4 Builds 0 points 21 months ago

As you should! You earned it! Thats good work. I actually just moved my build into that case, i love it. Very sleek and sexy.

Rule #0 of PC Building: Never EVER name your PC "Beast".

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 3 points 21 months ago

I didn't - note the lack of Capitalization. Thanks for the feedback though.

SpecificAlduin 2 Builds -1 points 21 months ago

The silent beast. It's in the name. The build is great though. It's rare I see builds as nice as this one. I love your desktop background too.

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 2 points 21 months ago

Thanks!

noap7 1 point 21 months ago

Fantastic build! So how well does that gpu perform? Would you recommend it?

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Thank you! Yes, very happy with the GPU so far. It's still new so haven't had the luxury of time - but so far it's handled every task without issue. Video and Image editing / rendering / 3D modelling to gaming - newest game is Mad Max, set all on Maximum and the card hasn't broken a sweat (81 degrees under heavy gaming load)

noap7 1 point 21 months ago

Noice! That's relatively cool under load, right?...

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 2 points 21 months ago

Yes, right within the green zone, so to speak ;)

floridaboz 4 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Those fans are so ugly, but so good. Anyway. I love the build, you did a great job.

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Thanks man! The fan is very quiet too. Color is the only thing I would change on the fan

Persicuta 1 Build 0 points 21 months ago

It's beyond me what the engineers at Noctua thought when combining those two colours. Like seriously lol

floridaboz 4 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Yeah.. They make such good fans to. If they would work with the color a bit more, i think they would really see a increase in sales for custom PCs for people who like to do color matching and wont buy them just because of that crazy brown color.

nachopc 1 point 21 months ago

Very nice job! For your first build, you have done wonderfully.

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Thanks! I am proud of the way it turned out :)

drumilpatel 1 point 21 months ago

Amazing build bro. You really got the cable management part right. I just have a question, why did you not go for an all in one water cooler like the Corsair H100i Gtx or NZXT Kraken x61? They arent noisy or anything. Dont get me wrong pal, I am just asking this out of curiosity. Its like the perfect build. And one more thing, dont take **** from all the loosers on this site commenting on you calling your pc a beast. Trust me it is totally a beast and value for money. They are simply jealous coz you own this beauty and all they own is a 1 core processor and 500mb of ddr1 ram. I hope you are enjoying this build. I would really recommend you play gta on it. You will get a solid frame rate.

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Thanks for the feedback. I did not choose water cooling as I was concerned about some of the failures I had read about casing mass failures due to water in the machine!

drumilpatel 1 point 21 months ago

Right.

drumilpatel 1 point 21 months ago

Hey you think you can check out my build and give some feedback? I am planning on building this one soon. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mRVTyc

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Great build man. I would only suggest checking out the define r5 case. Silent and a pleasure to build in post a build and pics when done. Would love to check it out.

drumilpatel 1 point 21 months ago

Right. Thanks for the suggestion bro. I was just wondering whether is it worth spending around 400 bucks for a pci-e storage or would it be fine if i went for a standard 2.5 inch ssd. If i go for the 2.5 inch ssd then I would opt for the 120gb option as i just want it for the os which is windows 10. I might add in another ssd later on for mac os. Please feel free to throw in some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

CallMeKoKo 1 point 20 months ago

Go for the 2.5. I haven't seen that much on s speed increase.

PrinceLDUA21 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

How's that wireless router working out? I was thinking of picking one up since I'm moving and I'm putting my PC in a different room from the router.

Also what sort of editing are you doing?

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

It's working very well. I get max speeds of 85/85 on FIOS. The router is in the same room, clearly makes a difference but didn't want to cable ethernet. I highly recommend it

tamtran 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Just an opinion but I heard that Corsair PSU is not recommended at all. Seasonic or EVGA has better quality. But you have a very nice build. Are you using it @1080 or 1440 gaming?

johngerges582 2 points 21 months ago

EVGA has better quality

Most of EVGA power supplies are crap.

I heard that Corsair PSU is not recommended at all.

You can't base a power supply on brands.

tamtran 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

How do you determine a good PSU?

johngerges582 2 points 21 months ago

Look up reviews for them. Not customer reviews, but reviews by professionals.

Don't go by a list.

vagabond139 5 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

This. Don't use the tier list is crap and you can really never go how good a psu is by brand unless its Seasonic/XFX/Delta/Superflower but even then that is only good for a baseline of how good it is and you still would want to look reviews up.

iwnr 1 point 21 months ago

>_>

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Thanks. I had not heard bad things about the Corsair in the research I did. So far I am happy, all humming along nicely. For gaming I am doing 1440. It's incredible. Gives the Xbox One a good run for its money. Just about everything looks good on this thing so far.

Jon,

I'm planning a build with the same Motherboard/Cooler Combo. I can't tell for sure by the pictures, but did you have to change the fan on the heatsink in anyway to avoid it causing issues for the RAM? I asked because I planned on using Corsair Vengeance LPX and didn't know if that cooler would get in the way of the DIMMS especially those closest to the CPU.

Thanks for your reply.

jon.flynn submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

Hi, no changes made to the fan on heatsink, will post a clearer picture to show clearance.

phi1316 1 point 19 months ago

One other question, did you use the tool to install the CPU from Asus or did you just install normally without it?

OlegR 1 point 16 months ago

Looks like you stuck with the stock case fans in their factory set-up. I'm getting an R5 and looking at very similar components. Do the stock case fans provide sufficient airflow through your case? What are temps like?

ol 1 point 9 months ago

Stellar build, Dude . Some of the comments mentioned cable management and I thought what cable management? On second look I saw it. Some of the best I have seen.

cooldaze 1 point 8 months ago

Hi Jon, Like you (were), I am an Apple user considering building my first PC to explore VR (Environmental Design) and limited gaming (too old for much of that). I was wondering, after a full year, if you have any things you would do differently from your original build?
