Description

Having had a pre-built Dell for the last few years, I decided to get back to building my own, inspired partly by this wonderful site.

I don't do much gaming, but I do a bit of 3D modelling and rendering, and I wanted something that wasn't going to drive me mad by its lagging.

I also wanted it to be as quiet as possible when not doing much. Still working on that, but it's much better than the Dell.

I'm sure people will tell me that 32Gb is overkill, and indeed, I haven't got close to using it all, but it's very nice to see all four slots filled!

Having built with a Gigabyte motherboard, I found that there were serious problems, and having returned it, I decided I liked the sound of the Maximus VII Gene. I haven't regretted that decision. I also traded the video card for a different make, but there was nothing behind that beyond availability and price. I have a hunch all the NVidia cards come off the same factory line and just get different badges. They certainly look it. Anyway, that's why the pics don't quite match the final set up.

UPDATE: Replaced the stock Corsair fans and the single Bitfenix case fan with Orange/RED Cougar fans, and it's waaaay quieter.

Part Reviews

Case

My one gripe is the power switch, which may just be my model. There's no room for routing cables out of sight, which is why the build has so many on display, but that bothers me less. A nice compact case, with little space wasted.

Operating System

So far, it's a huge improvement on W8.1...

Wireless Network Adapter

Having just installed a new dual band router, I got this thing, and couldn't believe how fast it made my download speeds. Quite awesome.

Case Fan

The ones I have are actually orange. They come with little rubber grommet things as an option for the screws, supposedly to reduce noise further, but these things are remarkably quiet, even at high speeds. The rubber feet are impossible to get in anyway, and I was quite happy to use my existing screws.

Monitor

Lovely piece of kit. Very large though... It will auto rotate if you swivel it around, and has a four button flying console that you can use to change the colour prefs and enter the menu. Only trouble is, it makes the 1080p Hanspree look rubbish in comparison.

Looks like you have the CX750 in your build list but in the pics is looks like an RM750. That is good. The RM750 might not be great, but it is much better than the CX750.

That SSD might give you issues. Once you get enough data on it, it'll start to get REALLY slow. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7763/an-update-to-kingston-ssdnow-v300-a-switch-to-slower-micron-nand

Otherwise looks great!

It's strange, when I read certain part lists I hear these thoughts in my head ... then, I scroll down and they're written in the comments section under the name tiny_voices. Spooky, super spooky.

Thanks, parts list corrected.

Thanks for tip on the SSD.

Looks nice! Can't believe 32GB is down to only $200! That's insanely cheap.

Please post pic with VII Gene!

it only $180 for ddr4 @2400 now :D

The number of people buying more RAM just to fill in the RAM slots are too DAMN HIGH !!! JK. Great Build, +1.

Nice build. For your quiet pc comment, I'm using 5 120mm fans in my wife's pandora and it is near silent. I have the stock Corsair fans in push and 2 Cougar 120mm fans in pull and then I added another Cougar fan in the exhaust. Much quieter than stock fans. They have really good airflow and decent static pressure.

Thanks. What Cougar model?

Got 3 of them. Don't know how you managed to fit 5 fans in a Pandora! I have one top exhaust, and replaced the Corsair stocks. MUCH quieter, thanks a lot. The real difference is when they spin fast. The Corsairs sounded like an aircraft taking off in comparison.

Here's a link to my version of the pandora build. I used the two corsair fans in push and the two Cougar fans in pull. I left the Corsair in the front because you can't see anything through the front vents anyway. They don't spin up very loud in this config. Glad I could help.

The AX 760 would've been a better fit for this build, colour, and performance.

nwhite92 1 point 26 months ago

The power supply won't do anything for the performance. Going from gold to platinum would only give a marginal increase in power efficiency at high loads. At idle it will be essentially no difference.

tormenta_storm 1 point 25 months ago

colour is not seen in this case so there is no reason
