Description

My younger brother's birthday is coming up, so I decided to build him a small budget gaming PC. Most of the parts you see here are either parts I hunted down on Craigslist, eBay or parts I had laying around. I'll go through where I got each part below.

I purchased the Pentium G3258 and BitFenix case from Craigslist. The person originally had the G3258 for $30 and case for $10, but since I was interested in both the person agreed to my offer and let them go for $25 and $5 respectively. The case came with the Thermaltake & BitFenix 120mm fans. Purchased about 6 months ago.

The Corsair H60 AIO Liquid Cooler was also purchased off Craigslist. The original price was $30, but I put in an offer for $20 and the seller accepted. He also tossed in a free 200mm Phanteks case fan since he had no use for it which was great since I needed one! Purchased 1 week ago.

The MSI H81 board was purchased off of eBay as refurbished. It was listed for $60, but I managed to haggle it down to $40 and free shipping. Purchased 9 months ago.

The DDR3 RAM was also purchased off Craigslist. I tried getting the seller to lower the price, but it was firm. )= Oh well, I decided to buy it anyways. Purchased 5 months ago. I also bought other stuff from this guy a few months later (it'll be included in a later build).

Small 320GB WD HDD 250GB Seagate HDD I had laying around, so I tossed it into the build since it needed storage. (320GB WD HDD was dead lol).

EVGA GTX 660Ti was picked up from Craigslist. The seller was literally down the street from me and was selling it for $10 because he thought it was broken. I talked him into just giving it to me for free since there's no use for a broken GPU. Picked up 6 months ago as well.

The CSM 450W PSU was purchased off of eBay. Was listed for $30, so I just bought it. Purchased 9 months ago.

Will add more info if needed. Part reviews coming within the week.

Here's the 3DMark Fire Strike score.

Part Reviews

CPU

Great processor with great overclocking capability. Can still run today's games really well.

Bought this for cheap on Craigslist for a low budget rig for my brother!

CPU Cooler

The Corsair H60 is an awesome AIO liquid cooler. Provides great cooling for my Pentium G3258.

Motherboard

Really good simple motherboard that can handle overclocking! Great pairing for a Pentium G3258!

Storage

Small 250GB HDD. Doesn't make much noise at all. Does what it's suppose to.

Video Card

Excellent GPU even for modern titles. The blower style fan gets a bit loud, but that's expected especially considering I overclocked it as well. Temps are not bad at all though.

Case

Lovely ITX case. The original owner added a rack to mount 2.5" drives on the side panel and removed all the drive bays. Removing drive bays creates a great amount of room for cable management!

Power Supply

Great PSU. This is running cool and quiet. + It's 80+ Gold rated & semi-modular!

Case Fan

Looks good! Moves air nicely and it's quiet!

Case Fan

LED is pretty bright. I have this mounted on the front top and it lights up the whole case. Moves air pretty decently.

Case Fan

This moves a lot of air!! Love it!

Liquid cooled pentium...

SubNauticaWaterWorld47 1 point 12 months ago

I doubt the fan will ever even turn on.

DaMysteryMan 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Lol... Overclock the Pentium to 4.5 then it might.

Tetsuclaw 5 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

Well paying $20 bucks on the cooler isn't bad since often buying used CPUs often don't come with their original stock coolers. Though performance wise the stock cooler is ample on a pentium chip.

True

your barter skill is 100 and you are above me sir :D in all seriousness great budgeting looks great hope your brother is happy with it

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Thanks! & He better be! haha

DinosaurusRex02 2 points 12 months ago

How much for bartering classes. I can pay like 0 dollars an hour.

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Free.

Just look for Asians in your area and observe! We love negotiating prices.

On a serious note, I drove to pick up most of parts that were from Craigslist, so sellers agreed to my offers! The best bartering is the GPU only because the seller had no clue what he was doing!

WIthdraws 2 points 12 months ago

I think I'm going to need you to be my teacher in negotiating.

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Easy. Just go look for local Asians and watch them do it. We love to negotiate prices. lol

Super solid build. The 660ti is still a solid card, it seems.

Nice work!

EDIT: Just read through the description + comments again and am now just realizing how good of a deal you got on all of this stuff. Well done.

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Thanks!

I did get some great deals. I was hesitant to offer a lower price since the parts on Craigslist were already low to begin with. I just made a lower offer and told sellers I would be willing to drive to them to pick it up.

Digital_Ronin 6 Builds 2 points 12 months ago

Excellent bargain hunting! I’ve been doing that quite a bit myself lately. It’s become an addiction lol. It is amazing some of the deals you can find locally. What ended up being the issue with the GPU? Or did the seller just not know what he was doing?

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

100% the seller didn't know what he was doing. When I first saw it there was only one 6 pin connected he didn't even have another 6 pin that was needed. On top of that, the other thing that gave it away was the fact that he connected HDMI to the motherboard instead of the GPU. I had to try my hardest not to crack once I realized that.

Digital_Ronin 6 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

Oh man what a score! That is fantastic

AwesomeGamerBuilds 2 points 12 months ago

I just remembered after reading this that I purchased a 450w PSU for $20 like 10 months ago and never ended up using it.

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Toss it my way! :DD

I have another budget build coming in either a few weeks or months depending on how much time I have.

What kind of games/work does your brother do? I'm curious as to what type of workload this computer is being called upon to handle. I'll go and see if I can check against your 3dMark score later too. Your haggling methods sure do make my Asian side giddy.

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

His gaming ranges from AAA titles to lower end ones. Recently he's been playing a lot of GTA V & Path of Exile.

I might do some more overclocking to see if I can get the 3dMark score up, but currently too lazy. I'll most likely just leave it alone for now and update the post with a new score if I ever do it.

Sam_Flynn 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Sooooo Did the 660 TI work?

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Yes, it's working perfectly fine.

Sam_Flynn 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Well neat then. Nice budget build!

Question, how do you fix a dead GPU? My old GT 610 died a few years ago and idk if I can fix it.

FlyinToasteronie 1 point 12 months ago

The GPU wasn't dead. Here's a direct quote from one of the other comments:

Basically the seller screwed up. Also, maybe baking your 610 would work? TBH, It's practically worthless right now. even iGPU's outperform it by a lot right now.

kins888 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Like the simplicity if this, your bargaining skills and your kindness for your brother - top marks that man!

JH_CustomPCs submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Thanks!

nosunallowed 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Amazing! Why did the seller for the GPU think it was broken? Did you have to tweak anything?
